First of all, our cruisers from Chalna 'accidentally' visit Gaspar system.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We destroyed Romulan outpost and colony ship, but a destroyer warped out. This is hostile act, I know, but think of this as of payback for their earlier attacks. We are not going to linger there for long - our cruisers have been ordered to return to Chalna. In the meanwhile, USS Velasco is completed at Acamar.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In the meanwhile, Internal Security reports of a major success against Romulan spies.

Next turn, our scouts bump into Borka system, under Romulan rule.
We disrupt outpost construction there, and what happens for next few combat turns is a game of cat and mouse between our two scouts and Romulan destroyer: It scores a hit, but not hard enough to kill our shields. We try to hit it, but it dodges too well to damage it. After some time, the destroyer cloaks and warps out of the system.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And look who came with a visit to Romulans. Ha ha ha.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Just as Mudor and Zeta Alpha systems are colonized in middle of terraforming, we discover another minor race, the Selay. Our scouts found them on the only star we haven't checked before, between Klingon and Romulan space. We shall start Federation'ing them right awa-

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Ehh? And how did they got so far from their systems? Time to form a strike fleet and flush them out of there. USS Gravina, freshly built at Acamar, and USS Shelton, just finished at Zakdorn and crewed by their young tacticians, shall accompany Cpt.Nrdl of USS Exeter in a task of driving away the Romulan raiders.
Oh, and Daystrom Institute (+100% Computer research) is completed at Vendikar.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Just one turn before our strike fleet arrives at Orellius, our scientists finished last Level-4 research - construction. This allowed our technicians to design a new class of warship - Galaxy-class cruiser, capable of wrecking much damage on it's own, not to mention serving as a flagship of larger fleets. Zakdorn shipyards have been ordered to stop Ambassadors production and build few of those technological marvels for now.

One turn later, our fleet at last arrives at Orellius system...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

...and Romulans are nowhere to be found. While we are OK with lack of Romulans anywhere around, Cpt.Nrdl expressed his sadness for lack of occasions in which he could prove his tactical prowess.
With construction of USS Wilson at Nrdl's home system, we start production of Galaxy class ships there. That's all for now.

Hey, am I still signed up on the list for being captain of something cool? If you haven't got any other plans maybe I can have one of those galaxy ships to dick around with? I want to bring "peace", "love" and "harmony" to all other species.

14.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Three cruisers routing away Romulan destroyers from Midos.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Romulans still around as Zakdorn completes USS Sumatra, our first Galaxy-class warship. Cpt.Holstergaard took command of it and the ship is en route to reinforce Chalna system.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Another monster, a crystalline tree entity, hovering near Acamar. I briefly considered pooling our forces in that system instead of going with 'harass Romulans a bit' plan.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Nrdl's strike group (6 cruisers: Exeter, Shelton, Gravina, Wilson, Strong, Winslow) en route to Eden system, just as Calamarain appears right at border of Chalna. Selay accept our friendship proposal in the meanwhile.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Romulans amass several destroyers around Chalna, and Calamarain departs to systems unknown. There is an outpost, two Ambassadors and two Oberths at Chalna in that moment.
Eden system devoid of enemies, so Cpt.Nrdl goes toward Borka. Selay accept our affiliation treaty.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Suddenly, while en route to Borka system, Cpt.Nrdl and his fleet literally bump onto Romulan outpost. As you can see, it has been destroyed with ease and without casualties on our side.
One turn later the strike group arrives at Borka and same situation happens - Romulan outpost destroyed without any problems.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

One turn later USS Sumatra, commanded by Cpt.Holstergaard, routs away four cloaked Romulan destoyers. They are covering in fear of our technology or Holstergaard's fame, or maybe both these things.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Romulan transport appears at Chalna. Said vessel is promptly destroyed.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

RED ALERT! RED ALERT!
USS Sumatra is ambushed just one warp away from Chalna by those four destroyers. Initial cloaked attack knocks 1/3 of shields away.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Despite skilled crew of Cpt.Holstergaard's on board USS Sumatra, Romulan destroyers ran away yet again without sustaining casualties.
As the destroyers are close to Federation transports nearby, USS Sumatra was temporarily assigned to escort said transports.
Then we receive the news that outpost at Zeta Alpha is completed and our scout vessels arrive at the alien system! Who awaits us there!?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This time, however, USS Andromede and USS Cortes aren't that lucky. Both are destroyed by warships of a race called Trill. The crew of the vessels knew the dangers of exploration and we hope that this misunderstanding won't deter our possible relationship with those aliens. They are skilled scientists and warriors, not to mention that Andromede's sensors detected traces of dilithium in Trill star.
Trill also gave explanation to the other race of aliens with outpost we detected a while ago - it is Cardassian Union, space faring empire of part-reptilean humanoids. They advised caution in dealing with them.
With this bittersweet first contact, comes end of this update.

NRDL's fleet shall be visiting accesible systems often to harass Romulan operations. There's no real fleet available for Hostergaard beside his own Galaxy and two cruisers guarding Chalna system.

15.

Few turns pass during which nothing happens, whilst our bribes build up relationships with Selay and Trill.
And then, this happens:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

They miss this big outpost at Midos, but on other hand, we don't destroy a single destroyer ourselves. Cpt.Nrdl's strike group has been called from Romulan space and ordered to hunt down the Romulans in our sectors. In the same time, USS De Ruyter, Galaxy-class starship is constructed in Zakdorn and sent to Midos for protection of local outpost.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Just as our first attempt at destroying the four destroyers fail (they warped out under cloak), our scientists get us further in Biology and Tal Shiar managed to strike a blow against us. They are annoying in their rather successful attempts.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This happens after our second attempt to destroy Romulan raiders. Oh, and Pelleus systme has been colonized and an outpost there was finished, allowing us to reach further 'east' on galaxy map.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Our scouts visit a system inhabited by Cardassians, the mysterious aliens of that outpost near Trill system. In the same time, our scientists push our Physics knowledge onto another level, allowing us to build advanced type of food replicators, as well as charge collectors. They give +100 energy points when build, but you can put them only on arctic worlds.
Turn later, another hopeless Romulan transport ends destroyed in Chalna.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We managed to seal an indefinite non-aggression treaty with the Cardassians, affiliation treaty with Trill, and as you can see, Selay joined the Federation! Huzzah!
Yet, Romulan raiding issue still remains. Niether our outpost can destroy them, neither our cruisers catch up and pulverize them. This is getting ridiculous.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Two turns later we have breakthrough in Computer sciences. Andromede and Sandhusky part ways, to explore lands far east from our regions, as well as sectors close to Cardassian space. USS Makarov, third warship of Galaxy class, is completed at Zakdorn shipyards.
In the meanwhile, Cpt.Nrdl unsuccessfully tries to get rid of Romulan destroyers, three times. Just, aaaargh.
For now, le ragequit :V

16.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Few more turns pass without anything interesting, so I decided to post diplomacy chart. As you can see, Romulans and Ferengi just formalized an alliance. This happens a lot in my games.
Nrdl's strike fleet shall be positioned at Borka, and when outpost at Selay is finished - hopefully we will be able to strike the very heart of the Empire: Romulus system.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Just as our scientists design Multifrequency beam technology, we receive news that Romulans signed affiliation treaty with the Cardassians. This means there's three-power alliance slowly forming above us. Bitterly, our diplomats have been sent to Qo'nos to negotiate peace with Klingons. Maybe we will even supply them with credits to support their somewhat rustic fleet and inspire them to expand their empire.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Maybe this will do the trick?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Oh and this happened as well. They have three light cruisers at their homeworld. Once we build special structure of theirs - Research Comittee - we shall be pioneers in new technologies.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Yes. It is time. Cpt.Nrdl's fleet has been ordered to set new course...

...Romulus.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Romulus proved to be empty of any targets, while we get this scientific breakthrough. Our scouts can reach even further now.
Also, Husnock Raider arrived at Selay system. That can be trouble.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Ferengi colony ship was intercepted by Cpt.Hostergaard. As Ferengi are allies of Romulans, this meeting ended how you can see it - in destruction of enemy vessel.
In the meanwhile, an armed convoy of 2 Ambassadors, a colony and transport ship depart from Angosia to the Gamma Hydra system, which shall be colonized.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

USS Thorn (Ambassador-class) is completed at Acamar, and USS Lazarev (Galaxy-class) is finished at Zakdorn. In the same turn, we face demands from Ferengi and Romulans, both demanding obscene amounts of money and the latter demanding to cede disputed territories to them. We decline, of course, while we also slowly, bit by bit, fun Klingon Empire.

One turn later, we receive what we were preparing for in last several dozens of turns.

Joint declaration of war by Romulan and Ferengi Alliance against Federation.
Cpt.Nrdl has been ordered to patrol area near Chalna and Selay, while Cpt.Hostergaard shall receive reinforcements - Thorn and Lazarev - and proceed to wipe out one certain ltitle system that was always a problem in our side.

RED ALERT! RED ALERT!

And then, at Turn 190...

We lose contact with the remote colony at Pelleus system. All communications are jammed by some powerful technology...

Seconds before that, our monitoring station at Zeta Alpha receives a brief distress call...

...followed by this message.

//DUN! DUN! DUNNNN!
//OHFUCKOHFUCKOHFUCK D;

Wow, how do you fight the Borg?  Do they adapt to your technology, requiring special ships, or something?

If it was possible to make peace with the Romulans and the Ferengi, it might be a good idea.

Their presence makes other major empires very willing to sign peace agreements, particularly if the cube is in their space.

Otherwise it's just a ridiculously powerful ship that goes around glassing systems. Haspen would need a fleet about 10 times the one he's got to consider fighting the cube. The fact he's making cruisers doesn't help much either. To kill a cube you need to have more ships than it has targeting sensors.

You can build a fleet of scouts for the cost of a single Galaxy class command cruiser. So in certain ways these weaker ships are more useful than stronger ones in an engagement with the borg.

Edit: The reason being that each shot from the cube is enough to take out a significant ship. So while it may take 3 borg "phasers" to kill the Galaxy class ship, throwing 9 scouts will require 9 shots to kill. At that point you just hope you have enough torpedoes to destroy the thing before it can make a second volley.

I've already defeated Borg many times during previous games. It's the first time they showed up so quickly.

Acamar and Zakdorn are able to churn out few more cruisers before I amass a fleet at Zakdorn or Zeta Alpha, so I think I will be able to get 20 or so ships in total.

Curses that I can't find out where they go next.
