This is really strange guys, it happended a year or more ago, it was really weird. Each morning when i waited for the school bus to arrive outside my house, i would just lie relaxing in my bed, sometimes sleeping, however the horn of the bus would always wake me. So this morning i was lying down, tired, my breath getting weird and this tingling feeling of lack of oxygen in the blood would appear in my nose, that was normal. So suddenly i felt asleep, it was just normal sleep. I was not thinking of this at the time, but it was suddenly like i was nothing in a sea of nothing, my body wasent there, no life, no self, no I, nothing, i was just disembodied nothingness, i did not exist, nor was i nonexistant, i was not alive nor dead, not awake nor asleep, i was just not thought of, i was unmanifested. So it happens that i suddenly realise that i "am" "nothing", and i "wake", i wake into a world, just like my room, my body limp and as if completely out of oxygen, if you have ever tried choking yourself or diving without equipment you know what i mean, that tingling painful cramp like feeling. I have had dreams of being far away before, but there wasent even any "background noise"; as there always is, when i am awake and sleeping, just some buzzing that reminds me that i am. I remember, before waking into that room, i was in this weird place, like a clinique, i could not see anything, only make out the purple on black silhoutte of what looked like a docter, "You could never see, it was all just blindsight, a work of your brain and misconceived perception, open your eyes, for real this time.", while that was happening it was like i was looking at some sort of wall, it was black, really dark, and blue, think Source engine shadow artifacts, really dark blue, with shades and spots of purple, think the obisidan texture in Minecraft. Ok we try again, i woke up into my room, the light was strangely grey, it felt like when you wake up a late afternoon, i rise, unsure on my feeting, and like anyone waking up in the afternoon, try to orientate me about what the hell that actually happended. So i take a look around, there was no colours, and those who looked like my parents were not what they claimed to be. I felt like i had lost my individualism. I went out on the street, it was really strange, nobody had any facial features, they were all faceless zombies strolling about on their business. Almost automatically and without control, i start walking around just like the faceless beings, eventually realising that i am under a monochrome sky in a colourless world, where theres no individualism, in a sea, a horde of colourless, faceless, identityless people. The town was really weird, a grid of streets, all squared out, the buildings only differed in height, and were all glass paned monolith-like skyscrapers. It felt like forever before suddenly i woke up in a shock, i checked my watch and not even 2 minutes had passed, i had realised that the entire time i had forgotten that  i was existant, i had forgotten how to exist.

Today, a year after, i got really curious what the fuck happended back then, i looked up "colorless world" then things like "dream", "Near death experience" and "astral projection", and ifugred out that the feature and colourless world of faceless zombies was a pretty normal near-death experience.

So, holy shit, i guess my head forgot how to breathe, then my body almost died from that. All i know is that i most likely had a near death experience. That was creepy, that experience stil lhaunts me today and i wonder what weird things i am dreaming of in my sleep.

Im really tired right now, ill write about when i dreamt of Eldritch Horrrors set to Meshuggah and Tool, before i knew of any of that, i lll write about that tomorrow.

Its a year ago that happended, and breathing always kicks back when things start to feel weird.
It couldve been a million different things that could have caused that NDE/OOBE/WhateverExperience :P

And no, i dont take drugs, i stay away from medication and i only drink at parties, and that was far away from anything holidayish.

I really need sleep now, good night, cant wait to check back tomorrow to see what people have written.

Sorry to say. But what you experienced is called a dream.

I doubt you will ever forget to breath, as choking oneself is impossible unless you "help" yourself doing it. You can pass out from not breathing, but you can't choke as your body will by reflex start breathing again on its own.

Higher levels of carbon dioxide in your blood can also affect your brain a bit. If you did not breath for some time, it would probably be likely you had elevated carbondioxide levels, which made the dream seem a bit more vivid.
This is actually also the main cause of "near death" experiences people report.

Also, add some line breaks to your text, it is hard to read anything without.

if you have ever tried choking yourself or diving without equipment
o-o

Can't say I've done the former before, but I can claim to be a part of the "AHHAH WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE CLUB!!!"

Drowning. Surprisingly tranquil. Didn't ponder any philosophical questions, my life didn't flash before my eyes and I didn't have some quasi-religious-Lovecraftian visions or whatever. Two main streams of thoughts followed my mind:
1. How do I not die in this situation;
2. If this is going to be how I die, it's going to be a pretty peaceful death.

And not much else. Not even elaboration on those thoughts. In retrospect, all of the above could be attributed to oxygen slowly disappearring, or just the, you know, precarious situation demanding all thought processes to be devoted to staying alive.

(Text size for dramatic effect)

Or just my character. I still haven't quite decided if myself not fearing death was something constant with me, or an after-effect of that experience.

I doubt you will ever forget to breath, as choking oneself is impossible unless you "help" yourself doing it. You can pass out from not breathing, but you can't choke as your body will by reflex start breathing again on its own.

Unless you're not in completely healthy shape ::)

Unless you're not in completely healthy shape ::)

I meant healthy people. As in, nothing physically wrong with them.

I do actually catch myself not breathing for a long(proably just 30 seconds or a minute)

I was also really sleep deprived at the point, couldnt it be possible that you can need so much sleep that bodily functions halt for a moment?

Oh yeah, also colourless worlds full of faceless people is apparently a very common experience for dying people. I dunno with you guys but i cant help but wonder if there is more than what you can see, after all.

I seriously doubt you've been going for minutes without breathing unintentionally. For one, there's the problem of how you would remember that period of time as not involving breathing without being aware of it. Secondly, breathing is reflexive and is not often stopped outside of conscious control.

You were sleep deprived, and so you went to sleep. Not that hard of a conclusion to come to. You had a dream, that's all.

A real near-death experience involves being close enough to death that your pineal gland releases its entire stockpile of the hallucinogenic chemical DMT into your frontal lobe. You will then proceed to hallucinate things vividly as your brain shuts down. That might even be SOP for dying, but obviously we're only ever going to get a look at the near-death cases.

Thank you MSH. If I had a nickel for every time someone on this forum made a smart rationalization, I'd give each and every one of you my nickels.

Huh, so people who take DMT are having near-death experiences?

Im not saying any of you are wrong. And im not going to argue against it, but forgetting your own existence And having the exact same experience as- oh welllets just settle with the apparently impenetrable wall of unquestionable truth science is. Edit: That sounded a bit rude. Sorry.

I used to quite often at like, age of 8-10, before waking up being somehow paralyzed, i knew im asleep but i couldn't wake up, also couldn't breath for a while, and when i was in this state i saw clogging up blood cells in my veins, or something similiar (Yes that was weird), i couldn't move any of my limbs. After trying to wake up i woke by falling off bed. Now it happens sometimes, then i dont panic and just try to take a breath, and slowly move anything to re-take control of my body, or whatever. I dont care if you dont believe me.

Sounds like Hypnagogia. Difficulty in breathing is common, as you are essentially half-asleep, and sleep paralysis has kicked in. Your body will still be breathing, but you will be entirely unable to control it manually, as your brain has disabled the controls, so to speak. It's part of the suite of nice things the brain does to enable us to have those hallucinations known as 'dreams' without risking ourselves by walking into a nearby hyena den in our nutted out state.
Hypnagogia also explains the out-of-body part, as that is another common occurrence when in the hypnagogic state. I think the correlation between the two is due to different parts of your brain figuring out that you can't consciously move your body while simultaneously being partially immersed in the hallucinations of dreaming, though I don't have a source for that. The chances of having at least 1 hypnagogic episode in one's lifetime is greater than that of not having one IIRC, with a pretty decent chance of having more than one. Hypnagogia and sleep paralysis are both quite interesting, and are actually the origin of both monsters and lore in most folk traditions worldwide due to both the common occurrence in the general population and the somewhat traumatic nature of the experience. This includes the 'mare' from which the English word nightmare is derived.

Though aside from that, I would also state for a fact that it did not occur how you think it did. Memory a year after the fact is incredibly unreliable to begin with, even with events considered 'memorable.' However, in addition to that, your brain will induce partial or full amnesia about that which you dreamed about. Afterwards if you try to remember, things will come up all jumbled around, with random bits removed and other plausible bits thrown in by your brain as it tries to figure out what was going on. Whether you realize it or not, the dream you remember never happened like you think it did and, at best, is similar to the actual events of the dream.

And now for some fun...
@greatorder: Manual breathing mode activate!
You are now aware of your tongue in your mouth!
Don't forget to blink!

Ah, I have experienced that one. Failed lucid dreams result in Hypnagogia/sleep paralysis.

As for near death experiences, I was hit by a car when I was 13. I was riding down a hill when a car came out of nowhere and I T-boned it. I was doing ~35km/h (22mph?) and the car roughly 60km/h.

I remember hitting the side of the car and time just slowed right down. I entered what I believe is 'experiential thought' where the brain strips down most of its higher processes so that decisions can be made very quickly and rapidly, but without most of the higher reasoning.
I remember flying through the air and thinking "This will kill me if I land on my head. Move your head out of the way, Reudh," followed by "I don't think I will break bones from this but this will be very painful" followed by "Here's the impact, brace yourself."

What followed that was an absolute quagmire of pain as I skidded on the road, acquiring abrasions and lacerations like crazy. I hopped up and told the person I was alright, but that it was probably adrenaline talking. I picked up my xxBMX Pushbikexx and walked it home.

That was an interesting experience. I wouldn't do it again. :P

I'd say the upwards of 4-6 minutes would be possible, but everyone's different.

I remember hitting the side of the car and time just slowed right down.
This is a weird thing. Only ever done this twice, one time resulting in me doing an awesome barrel roll... The other, moreso a skid and roll across some hard rock.
