Der Langrisser
« on: May 06, 2012, 06:17:32 am »

Anyone played this SNES gem before? It is an excellent tactical game, I even prefer it to the Fire Emblem games, and it has a choice system which allows you to join the human (greyish) bad guys, the good guys, a neutral independent, or go the chaotic path and fight together with the demonish bad guys.

Unlike its prequel, Warsong (which I didn't really like, it's much more linear), it has no official English translation, but a fan translation was made in 2007-2008, and it's pretty great so far. It was a fun game even in Japanese, but the English translation just makes everything better.

The English fan patch can be found here: http://projects.elsallia.com/der-langrisser/downloads
The UPS patcher to patch the fan patch can be found here: http://byuu.org/programming/ (it's upset, and yes, it's in .tar format, but it has a windows binary in the .tar file)
And lastly, use bsnes should you wish not to use actual SNES hardware that you totally own (it can be found in the same site as the UPS patcher). ZSNES doesn't work, as the note in the translation site says.

NOTE: If you want to play this using SNESoid on your Android, remember to tick the box in 'Use "C" Core' in the other settings menu in your SNESoid, this is to prevent funky graphics all over the place.

I have an SNES and I have a computer.  I have no like, adapters that would hook a controller to USB though.  Windows 7, can you give me a basic shakedown of "How does noob installed game?"

With you making claims greater than Fire Emblem I can't help but become a little itchy on the palms.

Also for those interested, Der Langrisser is basically the SNES remake of Langrisser 2

EDIT: Girlinhat, I don't understand, what USB and adapters are you talking about? Unless you mean hooking a USB controller to the USB adapter for the SNES?

Fairly sure it is, albeit Langrisser is a portmanteau iirc.

Maybe, I guess. Its English name is "warsong" though.

Fine then I'll spell it out for you.  I'm interested in the game and I don't know how to get it running.

Heh, figured, I just wanted to give the benefit of doubt though.

Well, have you ran several other games of the same system before? It's pretty much the same, albeit this time with bsnes, because others will have problems.

If you're asking how to patch the game, well the instructions are pretty much there, in the fanpatch download link, together with the link for the UPS patcher I linked in the OP.

What you do is launch bsnes, then select the game file which you have clearly obtained from your legal copy of the Der Langrisser cartridge.

This is the problem I always hit when I try to get into emulators.  Go online, "How do I run this?" and the only response I get is "you run it like any other emulator".  If I know that I don't think I'd have to ask.  Apparently it's difficult to get an actual answer on how to do something though...

It'd help if we had a bit more info on what's tripping you up, gi. Most emulators are fairly simple; download, uncompress, run program, open game image (usually a rom or cd and via a very simple "open rom/cd image" command in the menu), play away.

As for USB, I usually play emulated stuff with the keyboard, not a controller, if that's the concern. You can use non-console controllers just fine, though.

Later edit: If you're asking how to manually dump rom images from an SNES, that... that's a bit more involved. Pretty sure it takes special adapters and more technical knowhow than I've ever had. I can probably hunt up some tutorials somewhere, though, if you're trying to pursue that.

Later later edit: SNES9x runs the SNES der langrisser recently translated just fine (or it did for me; going by the patch read me, this is likely because I disable sound), so you're not stuck with bsnes (which is a freaking terrible resource hog, for all of it's accuracy). 9x is also a bit more user friendly. There's also a workaround for ZSNES. Lunar IPS is also a much more (windows) user  friendly patching program. Byuu's patch does take a UPS patcher, though, so go with upset. Forget what I used, eh.

Well if you try to translate it to German it means something like "the long-ripper" but its not really correct and doesnt make any sense at all...

So what do you guys think about the game? Better than Fire Emblem?

Different but still good. It's definitely around the same level as SNES era fire emblem, but perhaps a bit easier. Still, quite interesting and an excellent SRPG. I like it more than FE m'self, but I don't like FE much :P

Bloody item duration nuisance.
