Dude....I loved Warsong back in the day, despite how teeth-gnashingly frustrating the linearity and scenarios could be. You spent more time trying to get weaker commanders kills than you did trying to win the scenario.

I've seen this title around for a while I just never took the time to look at it. So thanks for the heads up!

edit

It even retained the battle scenes.

So I just got a version with the language patch already done....works fine in ZNES. Been playing about 3 hours with no issues.

Which is good, because bnes was giving me problems setting up. Couldn't get its purifier application to work, and the thing has zero presence on Google.

The game is great. My only complaint is that so far it's not as grim as Warsong was. I'm sure it will go there eventually, but man there is so much hammed up dialog.

Ah, right. Remembered. Regarding the langrisser series, there's also this. And for you, nen, there's also a translation for the PC version of warsong putzing around, as well as a retranslation for the genesis version.

Going to have to check this out.

On the topic of controllers I kept hearing bad things about the different SNES USB adapters and so I bought a converted SNES controller with a USB plug. I can't remember what game I found unplayable through the keyboard.

Was it by LangFanDood or someone like that? Either that or ZSNES has been improved.

Later later edit: SNES9x runs the SNES der langrisser recently translated just fine (or it did for me; going by the patch read me, this is likely because I disable sound), so you're not stuck with bsnes (which is a freaking terrible resource hog, for all of it's accuracy). 9x is also a bit more user friendly. There's also a workaround for ZSNES. Lunar IPS is also a much more (windows) user  friendly patching program. Byuu's patch does take a UPS patcher, though, so go with upset. Forget what I used, eh.
Most likely it's because you disabled sound, as the download page says:
Quote
ZSNES, SNES9x and SNEeSe all contain bugs in their sound emulation engines that will cause Der Langrisser to sporadically slow down and lock up during gameplay.

Man I spent probably 8 hours playing this yesterday. So many restarts until I figured out how the secret tile numbering was done. Still, it's love, it really is. Currently fighting the urge to use the secret item shops.

So, do you guys like Erwin as a mounted or unmounted character?

I kinda don't like how important class differences are. In Warsong, Cavalry still rolled infantry, but in DL, they rape them. And yet pikes rape even absurdly overpowered cavalry. Which would be fine. Except it applies to characters too. So Erwin as cavalry gets raped by pikes even though he's more than double their everything.

So infantry, because it's got the least vulnerabilities. Cavalry in Warsong was super powerful, but in DL I feel like it's incredibly fragile.

Also was the translation totally from the original or did they ad lib some? I was amused to see it took less than 4 scenarios for the pedophile humor to start coming out.

I'm not sure, but the read me might shed some light on it.

That said, considering who the artist (Well, portrait and concept art stuff) is for a lot of the (earlier, at least) langrisser stuff, I would be utterly unsurprised if it was being translated straight.

Might depend on which translation you're using, though. The mentioned langfandood one is more or less completely machine translated and somewhat notorious(ly bad) among the romhacking community. The more recent ones are of (much) higher quality.

Apparently Langrisser 4 does not have troops, only heroes? That's a shame.
