Can creatures land on other creatures?
« on: May 06, 2012, 01:25:53 am »

I've been thinking of creative defense mechanisms.  When creatures fall z-levels can they land on other creatures? can this damage them?  What about items, like stone? or an anvil? Can these be used to cause damage?

In my mind, I imagine goblins walking down a tunnel entrance, only to have piles of kittens dropped on them.

creatures landing on another living creature cause neither of them to take damage. Items don't cause any damage. Unly falling constructed walls/floors, which counts as a cave-in

Jam a door with its corpse and let all the goblins in. Hey, nobody said it had to be a weapon against your enemies.

Indeed. Dropping a dwarf onto a floor from 20z up will cause the dwarf to splatter. Dropping a dwarf from 20z up onto a kitten will result in no injuries.

Why not tether cats into a 3x3 room and use them as furry fast-travel systems?  Have a dwarf walk over a bridge that drops out from under him, only to land on a pile of kittens down at the magma sea level.

The fact that neither creature takes damage when one falls on another has been exploited, or at least attempts have been made to exploit it. By stationing a soldier on a hatch far above a small chamber with a kitten pastured in it, in theory the soldier could be rapidly deployed many levels downwards simply by pulling a lever to release the hatch. Unfortunately, and very amusingly, the kittens tend not to stay put, so those soldiers are often dropped onto solid ground instead of kitten-cushions, with messy results.

More often, people using dodge-fall traps (a device involving weak weapon or spike traps on a narrow bridge over a deep pit, where the traps incite enemies to dodge over open space where they fall to their deaths) find that if their pit is not deep enough to cause instant death some victims may fall onto the not-quite-dead previous victims, landing unharmed. As this compromises the effectiveness of the device, it is vital to ensure that falls kill instantly.
