Satisfied with her answers, Ariel set to work.

Day 1:

2 hours: Move my stuff over to the new house. Find somewhere to park the motorcycle, claim a room and one of the better offices and put Seymour, Audrey and Rufus in the Gardens. Luck to travel sucessfully, I suppose, so 1d100+10 bonus.

10 hours: Go down into the basement and attempt to Condense the local spooks and spirits into a usable form. There's got to be some lingering spiritual presence around, given all the people that have presumably died down there. 1d100+10+5 for stat mod and focus respectively.

And, finally, I vote for Hidden Curriculum

Kathryn:

You decide to start the day with a jog around the grounds to keep in shape. You make two laps around the mansion before the thick LA smog base begins to get to you. After your third lap you wind up feeling nauseous and exhausted. You give up and head inside to catch your breath, without making any significant progress... 1d100+20 = 18 + 20 = 38

Hunting down Henry to serve as an audience you begin to practice your manipulation of water while the Geomancer does the same for his golem spell. You find the magic comes naturally to you. The water twists and swirls at your command. You move on to using the spell to produce elaborate shapes. While you are holding the water in the shape of a serpent you are overcome by a fit of coughing. To your amazement the water snake suddenly begins to move on its own! You spend the next hour learning to replicate the effect on command. (New Spell: Summon Aqua Snake. Progress towards becoming comfortable with Water Effects is now 2/4) 1d100+10 = 95 + 10 = 105

You decide to leave the house, contributing to the oppressive smog by hopping into your Car and finding a gun store. You buy some ammo and depart in hopes of finding a wooded area to practice shooting. Failing to find woods you return to the manor and just take target practice in the basement. You figure if you are allowed to practice magic down their, firearms should not be off limits either. After some shooting you find yourself back down to the amount of ammo you started with, and feeling well on your way to developing proficiency with firearms. (Progress towards obtaining a mundane skill in firearms is now ⅕. -50 USD) 1d100+10 = 58 + 10 = 68

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Adrian:

You settle down for a nice long coding marathon. Fueled by Coffee provided by Kestrel you tear through the code at a record pace. You finish in a mere four hours! You then spend six hours, dicking around with the magical app, trying to figure out why it can’t be transferred to other devices. Eventually you reach a major breakthrough, and are now fairly certain you can transfer a copy of your current App to other Nokia Lumia 900s. (Progress on becoming comfortable with Magic Detector is 2/4. It now takes a negligible amount of time to transfer the Magic Detector app to Nokia Lumia 900s.) 1d100+20 = 89 + 20 = 109

Deciding that you should expand your library of magical apps, you decide to spend some time experimenting with magical code. The experiment goes smoothly. Very smoothly. In two hours you come up with an app that can project your phone’s ringtone into all technological audio output devices within 40 feet. You have no clue how you were able to invent the app so quickly; but you feel quite comfortable with the code. (New Spell: Project Ringtone. Progress towards becoming comfortable with Project Ringtone is 2/4) 1d100+20 = 95 + 20 = 115

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Henry:

You fetch a lock from Kestrel and claim one of the cells in the basement. The room turns out to contain several old crates full of odds and ends, but you eventually clean some space up and set up the magic circles required to create some airplanes! You leave them to sit before heading out to work on your Golems...

As you are setting up your first set of Magic Circles for Golem practice, Kathryn joins you. Using you as an audience she practices her manipulation of water. You find this quite impressive... and very distracting. You get next to no work done while she is around, but eventually the investigator departs from your presence and you can buckle down and get to work. You struggle on for several more hours, but Kathryn seems to have thrown off your Mojo, and you fail to make any significant breakthroughs with your Golems. 1d100+25 = 12 + 25 = 37

Making your way to the garden, you are intent on coming up with a new ritual. You are making a circle out of the garden soil when you notice it; a coral snake. Red touches yellow, you’re a dead fellow. You lose your cool at the sight of the deadly serpent, and return dejectedly to collect and finish up your paper airplanes...  1d100+25 = 12 + 25 = 37

Back in the cellar you pull three pieces of paper from the magic circle and fold them into destructive airplanes... You feel a bit more confident about your ability to help in battle with a few of those in your pocket. (+3 Paper Airplanes with 10 hours of charge. Progress towards becoming comfortable with the Throw Earthquake spell: 1/4) 1d100+20 = 46 + 20 = 66

Harman:

Starting the day browsing the shelves, you hit the books. At first it is difficult, as few of the books are in english, and those that are tend to be beyond your comprehension. Eventually however you find a book called the Trials of the Dark Artist. The book is written like a novel, but margin scribbles seem to suggest the magic within is for real. You find the description of a spell called ‘touch of the leech’ that although complicated looking, might just be possible for you to cast. The spell seems to require a living victim, so one must be acquired if you wish to practice it. You stash the book in your room for later. (+1 copy of Trials of the Dark Artist) 1d100+10 = 60 + 10 = 70

You head to the basement and try to figure out how to fire off arrows without the use of a bow. Your experiments are fruitful and soon enough you are flinging arrows around bow-free. During your practice you accidentally launch an arrow in a looping arch! Acting quickly you put out your hand to absorb the incoming missile, shooting it out of your cane and into the wall! (Your Redirect Projectile spell now works on physical missiles, and can be used twice an encounter. New Spell: Bowless Arrow) 1d100+15 = 83 + 15 = 98

Deciding that you are in terrible shape for somebody of your new profession you decide to work out Finding no proper equipment in the manner you decide to go for laps around the grounds. As you run the trees and shrubs seem to hiss at you. At one point you even hear them speak, launching a technically incorrect ethnic slur at you! Not daunted by the floral peanut gallery you continue your jog. As you take a tight turn around the house, a bush reaches out and coils it’s vine around your leg. It tightens the grip of the tendril and whips it backwards... You hear the sound of bones breaking and hit the ground before blacking out.

...You come too in your bed with Kestrel beaming over you. “That was a nasty fall. Kestrel is preparing something to fix up your leg, but needs until tomorrow evening to get it ready. You have a cast on, and crutches are leaned right up against the wall if you insist on moving around before then. If you can part with 50 bucks or so, Kestrel can tell you how to avoid pissing off those plants in the future.” (You have a broken leg for tomorrow's first 7 hours. -30 on all body rolls until then. -10 on all rolls that are not made in bed until then) 1d100-10 = 8 - 10 = -2

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Ariel:

You set your plants in the garden and unpack your stuff in your room. This takes some time, but is accomplished rather easily. (Auto success)

Deciding that you need to harvest some souls, you head to the basement and coat your hands in a mixture of salt and nighttime cold medicine. You then raise your hands above your head and begin to chant the words that Frankie whispers into your ear. For hours nothing happens, but you remain patient. Eventually you get a bite.

A passing soul decides to pay your body a visit. At first it feels good, real good. You spend several minutes drooling and howling in orgasmic bliss as your body tries to convince your mind to let the intruder take control. Fortunately for you Frankie drags you back to reality with a well placed scratch to the forehead. Coming to your senses you wrestle the intruder into your hands and begin to condense it into a form that you can use. This takes some time, as the spirit is strong enough to resist you at every step of the way, but after several hours you collapse to the floor laughing, with a large crimson pearl in your clutches. You can tell at a glance that it is too powerful to have ever belonged to a human. (+1 Chaotic Evil condensed soul, power-level 7/10. Your progress towards becoming comfortable with the Condense Soul Spell: 2/4) 1d100+15 = 79 + 15 = 94

6 hours: Work on improving my awakened clay. Trying to get them to last longer, or be smarter, or stronger. (+20 from 45 knowledge, +5 from focus) +25
Though he was disappointed in his failure Henry knew he could not give up, not with the lives of children... Or even his own team, at stake.

6 hours: Work on a coming up with another ritual, try to get something that allows me to control earth. (+20 from 45 knowledge, +5 from focus) +25
Although the snake shook him quite a bit he was not ready to give up. He could almost feel the powers just past his reach. Powers he would need to protect people in this new job.

One critical failure for a spell upgrade, a new spell, and a spell book? Worth it!

7 hours - read memorize Trials of the Dark Artist(in bed)[+10]
I hadn't planned on reading through this so soon, but circumstances aren't exactly good for anything else. Though I never thought I'd want to murder a tree before.
1 hour - pay Kestrel for the safe routes
I'll be avoiding them from now on, but knowing where they are will be important for later.
4 hours - play chess alone or with Adrian(if willing)(for the purpose of improving intuition)[-10]
What else is there to do right now?

4 Hours/Exercise (Body: 40, at +10 Mod, +10 for mundane skill...final, +20)
Kathryn began plotting out an exercise track she could use inside the house-from the front door, all the way around, through the basement and back up...it was a lot longer than she thought it would be.

4 Hours/Firearm Practice (Body: 40, at +10 Mod...final, +10)
Kathryn decided to keep up a steady schedule the next day...until she ran out of money for potshots, of course.

4 Hours/Negotiation Practice [Bar Hopping, Socializing] (Body: 40, at +10 Mod, +10 for mundane skill...final, +20)
Kathryn couldn't keep bottled up in the manor forever-nor did she want to become a cave dwelling sorceress-so, she spent the late evening of the second day putting on her Sunday finest, and going out to socialize and mingle...of course, she would keep an ear perked for anything 'interesting' she might hear, relating to her line of work-maybe she might find a prospective client or two!

Or at least keep up on the latest fashion trends.

3 hours: Spell research phase one! Talk to Frankie about ways to communicate with condensed souls. +20 from either Connection or Faith, and +5 if Frankie is willing to cooperate.
6 hours: Spell research phase two! Raid the library for books about magical plants and herbs. +20 from knowledge, +10 for mundane skill: Botany
3 hours: Search around the house for any spare reagents that I know I need for my spells. Special emphasis on hard liqour and sulferic acid, but whatever I might need for any spells Frankie tells me about as well. +10 from intution?

At breakfast, Ariel introduces herself to the rest of the Midnight Sware:

"Hey, everyone. Got in a little late last night. Strangest thing, really; I ran over a lone shoe while I was driving over. But, anyways! I figured we should introduce ourselves to eachother, since we're all in this together, right? I'm Ariel. Ariel Taylor. I'm something of a demonologist. And this..."

Ariel held up a suspiciously large tawny cat before continuing, "...is Frankie, my familiar."

The cat spoke in a Jamacian accent. "Ja man, don't let this cat fool ya - I being one mean jumby. Pleased to meet ya though."

"So, what sort of mages are the rest of you?"

You can RP in the topic if you want, but don't make it part of your action. We ain't rolling for your RP. Also, try not to put up pages and pages of RP until everybody has had a chance to post an action. Just a bit more simple to have all the actions on one or two pages.

Haika will be writing up and rolling day 2 for you all. After he has had his chance to use the system as is, the two of us will likely tweak some rules and such regarding the forum game portion of this. So don't get too comfortable :p

OOC: @Grek/Anyway, I've been meaning to tell you-through fate or design, both our chars have purple hair. :P

If we need a minor IC explanation, I'd say it's because of when we gained our !!magic!!, it actually turned into that color-and, we both dyed it our own shades darker or lighter to try and hide the fact. Sound good?

4 Hours: Playing Chess with Harman. (Uses Intuition, No modifiers) Hey, any sort of recreation would be good for now, considering the apparent lack of entertainment in this place. (Kestral may or may not be able to warp in a TV and a video game console, but Adrian doesn't know that :P)

8 hours: Coding practice/experimentation (Uses knowledge, +20 mod) Boldened by his earlier successes, Adrian continued is experimentation with the coding, Focusing on possibly making a program self-aware this time around.

And the Turn:

Henry:

You spend the morning testing various forms of small golems. The little creations tend to last longer when not given any command, so you guess that the issue is the energy powering them, or something being lost between the command and the animation itself. After a long experiment session you come out of your chosen work area covered in clay dust, with no real progress. It seems /just/ out of reach as to why things arn't working the way you want them to.
d100+25 => 25 + 25 = 50(ouch man, ouch, need better than 50, 1-50 is failure, 51-100 success)

After your stressful failure of the golem work, you start theorizing on how to make up a ritual that controls earth. With plenty of clay golem corpses to practice on and the dirt in the gardens, you figure if you just copy your other circles, maybe you can focus them to act like golems but more directly without shaping them. The result is you being quite tired at the end of the day, and making no progress at all.
d100+25 => 18 + 25 = 43

Harman:

Resting your leg, you spend the time to read and attempt to memorize the contents of your book. The Trials of the Dark Artist, tells the story of a assassin jester. It explains in details how contortion of the body can produce magical channels that are not considered routine for most living beings. The book also tells in grisly details how the jester would kill his targets, by using his magic to spell the loved ones of said target into doing depraved acts.
(New Spell: Contortion Seduction)
d100+10 => 73 + 10 = 83

50 bills later, Kestrel gives you a short tour of the gardens. Most plants here are tame and mundane, but the one that you caught the attention of is a wheeping willow bush. Kestrel explains that the bush is related to Xanthian Tangle Trees, with vines that wrap around and grab any pray that get into range. However, willow bushes are gender specific, and only seem to go after male targets.
(-50$)

You play chess with Adrian and win! The game isn't really very engaging, Adrian seems very distracted by something. You walk away with a few more ideas about how to better play the game in the future however.
(Progress towards becoming comfortable with the mundane skill Chess: 1/4)
d100-10 => 61 - 10 = 51

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Kathryn:

Jogging through the house makes for some quick turns and dangerous corners, but it keeps you on your toes as you exercise in the early morning hours.
(Progress towards +1 Body Stat Gain: 1/5)
d100+20 => 59 + 20 = 79

Practice seems off today. Perhaps you are distracted by the aftermath of Ariel's experimentation? The /walls/ in the next room over are very disturbingly arguing about the color of the rat's fur they saw this morning running past them.
d100+10 => 19 + 10 = 29

Quote
4 Hours/Negotiation Practice [Bar Hopping, Socializing] (Body: 40, at +10 Mod, +10 for mundane skill...final, +20)
(Unfortunately, this is not a Body mod here, but intuition mod. Socializing is a mental skill, to know when to ask questions, when to listen, when to compliment, etc. Luckily your mods are the same, but note for the future. Physical appearance plays a part, but the skill is mostly mental.)
Bar hopping turns out to be positively boring. The talking walls in the manor basement had more personality than most of the people you meet tonight. After a few hours you decide to give up and head back to the manor for some rest.
d100+20 => 10 + 20 = 30

Ariel:

You start to converse with the spirit you condensed earlier, as frankie gives you tips, everything seems to fall into place. Before long the spirit is outright shouting and moaning and it's almost everything you can do to stop the thing from being too loud. Then you notice that other things around you are adding their voices as well, in a bit of an overkill, you have managed to make every object in your immediate location begin to speak it's mind.
(New Spell: Condensed Soul Conversation, New Spell: Inanimate Voice)
 d100+25 => 90 + 25 = 115

Quote
6 hours: Spell research phase two! Raid the library for books about magical plants and herbs. +20 from knowledge, +10 for mundane skill: Botany
(You arn't experimenting on a ritual or reading a book you've already found, you are looking for a book. Therefore the stat should be either intuition or luck, and your skill would be about direct interaction with plants, not searching a library. Giving just a +10 for intuition here)
Heading into the library you begin to look for books on plants. After a few hours you start to become a bit frustrated in your lack of success, and sit down in one of the reading chairs. As you are taking a break your eyes are drawn to a strange gap between two of the bookshelves. Pushing one of the shelves aside you find a hidden alcove in the wall, with exactly what you were looking for. A small leather-bound journal seemingly filled with notes on magical plant life, and a small pouch with acorn shaped seeds about the size of a typical corn kernal.
(+1 Plant Magus Journal, +1 Unknown Seed Pouch with ten small seeds.)
d100+10 => 83 + 10 = 93

As the evening draws on, you search the house for spell components. You manage to find a bottle of rubbing alcohol in a medicine cabinet behind a mirror.
(+1 bottle rubbing alcohol 12 FL oz)
d100+10 => 43 + 10 = 53

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Adrian:
Tapping away at your computer most of the day produces an almost zen like state. You relax and let your magic meld with your expertise and program over and over again until it seems like you've done it many times. At the end of it all you take a break, and are rather startled to find a small window in the lower left of your screen with a pixelated face in it. With the words 'Hello Master, what is my name?' popping up underneath it. Checking the code, you find the little AI is simple, but aware.
(New Spell: Create Simple Mech Sprite, +1 unnamed Mech Sprite AI)
d100+20 => 77 + 20 = 97

Taking a break from coding for a bit, and telling the newborn AI to go into sleep mode until you can figure out what to do with it you decide to go off and play some chess with Harman when he offers. However, your mind is distracted by the implications of creating life, and you lose the game and learn nothing from the time spent playing.
d100 => 21

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

-------------
Now that that's done, I need to talk to weird about time frame modifiers. As it stands now, practicing for 1 hour or 12 give the same amount of practice. This will change in the next turn, so you may want to hold off on your actions until the rules on that are declared.
