Didn't they plan to have microtransactions?

Yes. Here's a quick list of examples I pulled up.

Quote
- Vehicle Patterns
- Company of Heroes 2: German Whitewash and Russian Winter Cobblestone Pattern Bundle
- Company of Heroes 2: Command Pass
- Company of Heroes 2: Theater of War Collection Set
- Company of Heroes 2: Veteran Badge
- In-Game Currency Gift to be Used Towards Purchasing Future Content
- XP Boost
- Unit Boost
- Commander Archetype

Some of those are DLC, some of them are microtransactions. They've confirmed they cannot be used for MP though. While it bugged me initially, I'm kind of beyond the point of caring. It's not like the game is P2W, and I have little to no intention of doing competitive MP.

So the open beta stress test is out.

Played two games on it. Both MP because it's the only option. First was Soviet, second was Wermacht.

First game, 2v2, failed horribly because I forgot how Company of Heroes works. I also forgot just how ridiculously tanky everything is in CoH and how slow everything is.

Second game went way better. 3v3. I singlehandedly wiped out all the Soviet troops with just a single flamethrower halftrack... something that happened to me in the previous game when I was Soviet myself. This might be a balance issue as there isn't a Soviet counter for that at that stage in the game. AT guns don't work since they take bout 4 - 5 shots to kill the halftrack but will die in about 3 seconds to the flamethrowers and infantry don't work for obvious reasons. Not to mention the only Soviet infantry-AT weapon is their AT grenade which is completely laughable.

After that was a matter of holding onto the victory points until the end. Around that point I started noticing that I was getting completely outnumbered about 3 to 1 but I thought that was merely just the Soviets having more troops in general. Turns out that both my allies went AFK after about 5 minutes so I was quite literally fighting 1v3 for the entire match. Still won, but that was kinda silly. I really didn't think it was fair because every single one of my infantry had Panzershreks, Panzerfausts, and MG-42s but the Soviets didn't have anything to kill my stuff. E.g: Soviet infantry barely have automatic weapons but all the German ones get MG-42s. Even when they charged me 3 to 1 I could still mow them down with just the basic troops. This is something I confirmed in the first game when I was trying my best to figure out how to kill German stuff as Soviet. Imagine if my allies were there.

Both MP because it's the only option.

Just put bots in all the open slots. Instant singleplayer skirmish

I played a third match. Wermacht again. 2v2. I did the exact same thing, except this time instead of roaming around with the flamethrower halftrack I sent it inside their base and camped it by their spawn point. I felt so bad but I thought it was needed to prove a point that it was completely broken. Since it was sitting by the spawn point, any AT guns or infantry reinforcing would die instantly and like I mentioned earlier... Soviets don't have any real AT capability for the early game other than the AT gun.

I sent the replay to the devs. Maybe they'll take note. I'm sure more people have complained though. In the first game, the halftracks died in one or two hits to AT guns or other forms of AT so it was pretty easy to stop them. This halftrack issue is the same thing as how the Stug IV was back when CoH was released.

So to anyone else who wants to try the open beta, I highly recommend Germans for now. Other than that one issue, I think it's pretty fun. Sound design is top notch as usual and the unit banter is still quite funny. The graphics are quite dated though, either that or they're doing some kind of retro-original look. The base buildings look especially derpy and it's quite tough to tell which building is what.

For those not playing the beta-thing, here's RPS' take: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/06/21/wot-i-think-company-of-heroes-2-single-player/#more-157162

Generally, they're fans, they think it's a good sequel. Some things have changed, but they're generally made up for by new additions.

-Tons of visuals, really loud sfx. It's a spectacle.
-Campaign is super bombastic, and is more focused on telling a story than letting the player do things
-Theatre of War mode is where the game is best played.
-Tactically it plays a little better than CoH 1, offering you a few more tactical options because of the improved LOS.

So, anyone else actually playing this? I'm enjoying it quite a bit, I suck at RTSs usually, so though some say the main campaign is easy, I'm finding it a bit of a challenge. Haven't tried out the multiplayer yet though, I'm always loathe to try it out because I suck so much haha. Does the match making match you by rank? or are the odds good I'll get thrown in with someone a hell of a lot better at the game?

I tried to play a game against a standard difficulty AI enemy and got stomped.  Either I came at it in a fundamentally wrong way or the AI is better than it ever was in CoH 1.

Also hopefully they fix the crashing after finishing anything that I many people are going through at some point today.

Raddish, The AI is honestly probably the biggest improvement in the game. Other than that, emplaced guns and the kill zones are 100% effective now, so you have to flank. I like to use one small unit to prob the map so I can find a path through the killzones and flank each gun. The maps are almost all designed with one or two paths like this except on the hard difficulty.

I have played the beta for several hours, and I can't find a single reason to play this over the original, the graphics upgrades is hardly noticeable(other than the game runs like crap).
The units seem to have slightly worse AI and I have had about 1 sec lag in every single game I've played.

I might be tempted to buy it for 5 bucks, no more.
They could just have made an eastern front expansion to the old game...

There are 2 things bugging me with the SP campaign so far.

The awful fake Russian accent and totally out of place soldier chatter is really not making me feel like I'm on any real battlefield but in a parody of one. While the visuals are good, the out of place lines of your infantry is destroying any kind of immersion.

The other thing, and maybe it's just the first few missions, but I feel the real challenge is in micromanaging your units rather than any kind of broad strategy. I'm hoping it get better later on when I have access to more options.

I've yet to have any real challenge, but I'm only up to mission 7 of 14. Honestly it feels more like a tutorial than a campaign.

At least there's lots of achievements to seek out. (lol)

I have a question. In CoH 1 you could not dmg normal tanks and similar things with rifles and small firearms, did they changed that?

No, I believe I read somewhere in game that speciffically mentioned that small arm fire was useless vs. armour.

Everything works the same in both games.
Literally the only thing they have changed is adding blizzard, which I find an annoying feature.
Oh, and removing defensive buildings...
