Prefered building materials.
« on: May 03, 2012, 01:02:01 am »

I believe that it would be desirable to be able to choose a building material in the (z) screen to always be on the top of list of materials for building constructions/workshops (if you have that material.)

I think it would be even easier (as in - zero configuration) to just have "Last used:" at the top.

A gabbro road project over here, and a orthoclase wall there, iron bar cell doors - switching between all the types is just a single trip through this list each. No new screens or keys.

Also doable by having  'x' be 'Switch Sorting Method' instead of 'expand'. Use the two methods we've -got- as the first type types:
1) General material distance
2) exact items sorted by distance

but then add more types:
3) general material by quantity.
4) exact items by value.

That sounds good. I just really want to play DF, not hunt for the material over and over again.

Alternately, it could work somewhat like a Paint style of system - a button to pick material, and a button to change what type of construction you are "painting", and then you could just keep designating constructions like you designate for digging.  Maybe you could even just use the mouse.

OH GOD THIS WOULD BE SO BEAUTIFUL.  Just keep x as expand and use a different key for switching sort-scheme.

As listed, it would still be there as the -first- scheme.

'Generic Building Materials by distance' -> x -> 'Item-by-Item expanded building materials by distance' -> x -> sort3 -> x -> sort4 -> x -> back to the start.

Yes, I would love to have all of this.  Putting the "last used" material at the top alone would be a godsend (and is probably the simplest change of them all).  We've already suggested various sorts/filters for lists, but having those everywhere is good, too.  And once you have it track the last thing used, there's little difficulty in letting you continue to create designations until you run out.

Bumping this suggestion , it would definitely be good to have this possibility and the "last used material at top".

IMHO, these should all be optional. Putting the closest material for the Workshop/Construction/Etc is often a good idea.

When constructing walls it can get a bit bothersome since the material will often switch pages depending on how far the "rest" material is from the area where you are making it. Being able to put an material type as "favorite" or just have the last used appear at top of all the ones avaibable will help a lot.

If I'm making a big wall or something, what I do is lay down a 1-tile wide stockpile that is the same length as the wall, or a decent sized stockpile right next to the tower site.  It is set to only allow the construction material I want.

30 Haulers fill the pile, while the 3 masons can do their work full tilt with the closest (often only 2 tiles away!) material being the right one for the job.

You could. You could also choose to arrange entirely by distance. It would be your choice.

Yes, just a last used option would take much of the pain out of constructions.  Usually I don't even care about the material, and just pick the closest, but I don't want them building my walls out of all my steel bars and horse soap.

Getting a little wish-listier, just a couple options like "Use closest raw stone" or "Use closest stone block" would be huge.  But I don't mind if my walls are all multicolored.

Yeah, but that's too sensible for us to think of. I'm pretty sure that Toady would prefer us to hassle him about it.

<semi-pre-emptive fake edit>
Don't take this seriously or sarcastically. I'm not entirely sure what tone I'm going with here.

<section break!>

I mind if my walls are multicoloured. But that's probably just my OCD. I also build my forts to be symmetrical, and get annoyed if the layer that I'm building in isn't deep enough. (I can't have my crypts in basalt and my workshops in obsidian!)

Anyway, I prefer the idea of having a Last Used (Microcline) option. Of course, the actual stone needn't be Microcline. I'm just using it because MIIICROOCLIIINEEE!!!!

Options? Agreed.
Important? Not so much. It'll probably happen eventually, but doesn't strike me as a huge priority.
