The auto-update is a bit stupid really. It doesn't make good decisions for ship design. You really should take the time to do it yourself. The auto-update will fill empty space on your ship up with only one type of weapon or defense, which may not be what you want if your opponent uses other weapon types.

As far as I can tell, it upgrade all the older subsystems with their recent versions. It will fill up remaining space with either more of the same, or a lesser version (that takes less space). This works nicely for me. One click to do all that? I am happy. My core design was based around missiles. Depending on who the weapons of the race I was fighting at the time, I'd have different defenses. One click for upgrading everything, then a couple of clicks for removing the extra systems, and a couple of clicks to add support/defense as desired in the remaining free space.

I admit I am mostly comparing to GalCiv2, where you'd have to either start a new ship from scratch, or manually remove every single laser you had added from each hardpoint (there could be over a dozen of the damned things), then individually add them back to those hard points, taking care to keep the ship symmetric (if you're into that kind of thing), and do the same for every single subsystem. I mean, it's nice to have all that, but then you never see the ship again. It becomes a useless chore.

Yet another reason I thought GalCiv2 was a terrible waste of drive space.

I liked the ship designer in GalCivII. THough the only ships I really used were in Battle of the Gods where you didn't need to upgrade weaponry.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

Finally got a chance to play this for a number of hours and enjoyed it considerably, for the most part at least.

I like how much complexity they managed to get out of the relatively simple planet / resource / improvement set they used. It actually needs a fair bit of balance or you start hemorrhaging money.

There are a few issue I found with the updating of the various formulas (like if you switch a planet to make dust your total income doesn't show as changed until you do something like adjust the slider or end your turn) but this being very unfinished it seems like a minor thing.

One place were I felt the game failed though was the combat. Don't get me wrong the first few times I really liked it, especially the few times I forgot and took too long to set which strategy to use before it ticked around and made me choose nothing. However after those first few battles I felt I was waiting a long time just for the timer to tick down rather than playing the game.

Wasn't massively keen on the heroes either, they feel a little bolted on because they felt they need something. But maybe they will get fleshed out as the game develops.

It's very well polished in general though considering it's 'this game is unfinished' warnings on start up.

GalCiv2's ship customization

That is the only part of that game I remember.  I think after designing one ship I uninstalled.

Well, the last of the factions has been properly revealed. Meet the Pilgrims.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A human quasi-religious group who love to study the Endless. Have been raised as a faction by the Sophons.

Ugh, I was hoping we'd avoid having the standard 'good' and 'evil' (or 'corrupt empire' and 'resistance', I guess) human factions. What's wrong with having a single human faction and using that other slot for another alien race?

There are actually 3 human factions in total. The Horatio are human too, though a bit more alien.

Nothing is inherently 'good' about these factions really. Good/Evil are social concepts relative to whatever society is currently prevalent anyway.

Yeah I don't really count the Horatio as a human faction, even if they are technically. They're alien and different enough. This new faction on the other hand is just 'religious human scientists against the corrupt empire'. I don't know, I mean, it's not like I hate them, or won't play them or 'IT'S RUINED THE GAME FOREVER', it just feels like a lost opportunity to add another alien faction, rather than make it another case of 'only humans seem to rebel against their governments'.

Good and evil were the wrong words I'll admit, 'corruption-riddled empire' and 'resistance' were better.

'only humans seem to rebel against their governments'

The Hissho are too tied up in tradition.

The Sophons all think alike.

The Cravers pretty much have a hive-mind.

The Sowers are artificial constructs made for a single purpose.

The Amoeba are too democratic to develop a need to rebel.

Out of the factions humans are the only ones who should rebel. But yeah, they could've just added an entirely different species.

I'll give people 24 hours to post any further questions for the developers then get them sent right off :)
