Horatios have the best backstory.

They did.  Now that title now belongs to The Sowers.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

That is one quite frankly awesome origin story.

I am very familiar with von neumann probes.

Von neumann gardeners are a new concept to me.

But not an unrealistic one.

Not just gardeners. They build entire cities and communications/transportation infrastructure. Imagine a world spanned with a planetwide infrastructure and huge cities, all standing empty and maintained by a fanatic race of machines.

Honestly that would make an amazing sci-fi story. The Sowers come to Earth. Some people welcome it, hey free labor and they build new cities and stuff! Some people hate it. They'll happily demolish your home, your 'monuments', your precious forests and rivers... because they don't fit the calling.

I may use this...

Certainly. You could theretically make von neumann anything. Even von neumann hunters(von neumann von neumann hunters if you are pedantic about naming), which I have actually thought would go really well into sci-fi universes because once a single species creates a von neumann probe, it has a tendency of eating everything and messing stuff up.

EDIT: This game is rapidly approaching critical mass for a purchase. I dont usually buy things that cost more than 10 euros(Im just throwing money around, arent I?), but I might make an exception this time.

I still haven't figured out exactly why this is so different from the other 4x's around. I've got a bunch of them, but only occasionally do they scratch "that itch". GalCiv2 does, with all the techs and getting better and better ships, but I get bored of redesigning them as I get better tech. The rock-paper-scissors approach really puts me down as well.

The forums for the game seem to feel that it's better than GalCiv2.
And the rock-paper-scissors approach isn't really evident.   Right now missle-boat destroyers roflstomp almost anything else, simply due to numbers.

I third it. I love how original some of these origin stories are turning out. An entire race cloned from a megalomaniac? Self-replicating terraformers? Single-celled organisms that are the peaceful, diplomatic race rather than some sort of plague?

Not all are exactly original, of course.

"A race of [avian] warriors, they were by tradition hunters that lived in a loose federation of clans and nations."

"Even after centuries of civilization, the Hissho have maintained their respect for honorable conflict and view valor as a more important skill than diplomacy."

Every time I'm in any sort of interaction with the Hissho, I just can't stop thinking about the Turians...
