You'll want to go to their official site, create a profile, then get your CD key off of steam (select game, right click), copy/paste that into an area of your profile on their site that says "Redeem G2G Code."

So how "feature complete" is this game? Obviously I don't expect it to be anywhere near complete since it's an alpha, but are there any integral parts of the game missing?

Not that 22 hours of gameplay have shown.  Research, diplomacy, combat (of a kind), exploration, colonization/base building; it's all in there.  I haven't encountered a single crash or bug (that I've noticed) and the UI is both functional and pretty.  Multiplayer isn't an option yet and they also have a few factions currently unimplemented, but other than that it's a full game.  It doesn't even really feel like an alpha/beta if not for a slight lack of balancing.

Luckily, it turns out that I do ;)

It doesn't follow the SotS/Total War mini-RTS format.  Instead, it takes place in a cinematic sequence, with the player having no interaction other than being able to choose a card for each of the three 'stages'.  Cards can have quite a wide range of effects (read: buffs and debuffs) on both you and your opponents.  It's kinda grown on me, although I'd still prefer a more tactical approach.

The main thing missing from the combat (if they don't change it) is being able to control the dang camera.

hmm so sounds like auto GalCiv2 combat with a bit "general tactic you can chose with a card" combat?

wonder how "simplified" the other aspects are... i quite enjoyed sword of the stars1 and distant worlds (well also space empires 5 complexety years ago... or aurora).
atleast the tech tree seems to be "relatively big" from screenshots.
hope the resource management and colony building isnt too simplified either.

and compared to sword of the stars 2 this game seems to run on win xp, so i probably give this a try instead of sots2, it sounds interesting enough atm.

In general the combat is a straight-forward slugfest, and the cards are just minor actions you can pull off. Overclocking your fleet's weapons, sabotaging the enemies' systems, launching the nano-repair bots etc.

I wouldn't say it's oversimplified, but it doesn't pile on complexity for the sake of it.

For instance, ship designing is handled really well IMO.  You can pile on weapons, defences and miscellaneous gadgets until you hit a cap in the form of weight.  There are three main forms of weaponry/defence (as well as significant upgrades) and quite a lot of gadgets to add in, some of which affect how much weight certain types of defence and weaponry take up.  Some add extra cards to your repertoire, some provide buffs etc etc.  Different 'base' ships have different weight limitations, as well as having buffs/debuffs for specific equipment.

Those 'minor actions' can massively change the output of the simple slugfests though. Get lucky on canceling an engineering repair or popping a defensive shield at the right time and you will do some massive damage or minimize your own damage to a tiny fraction of what you would have sustained. I've won some fights clearly stacked in the AI's favor just by luck and judicious card usage.

They have stated that some features are not in the game yet, but will be put in. For example, one of the current votes is on whether to add the ability to retreat from a combat, raze a system, or auto-explore. All 3 will be in the final game (and probably a later beta), but we get to choose what will be in the first beta release.

The fuck.
Instead of leaving the enemy a system full of inhabitants and upgrades, you can leave them a system full of empty planets. (Had to resist the urge to say "a system full of barren planets", since barren is a planet type in the game. I hate barren planets.)
