I saw this on steam and was amazed. I want it so bad.

It looks like Galactic Civilizations II except way better.

Ok I don't get it...

Was Galactic Civilisations 2 good or bad?

Because I didn't like it but everyone around me liked it. (Also I am starting to despise the "One rail" Research tree method so much. ESPECIALLY in sci-fi settings)
I thought GalCiv II was awesome (even started an LP of it a year or so back), so if this is better I'll be very happy.

I never really liked it. SotS and Space Empires held my attention better.

GalCiv 2 was fun in Twilight of the Arnor (Death Stars, woo), and when you didn't give the AI any techs. The AI seemed to know exactly how to screw you over for trying to trade techs as soon as you got just a smidge past medium.

It was also fun becasue you could use Kryo's Hull System Mod to make silly ships, and the TotA editors to start with basically every tech except xeno ethics and a few other ones if you wanted to not have to give a damn about your opponents and their ships.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

GalCiv 2 felt kind of ... soulless and clinical to me, for some reason. It never drew me in. The humor felt flat, the gameplay wasn't compelling, the AI was quite good, the diplomacy was okay -- I just never had a real urge to continue any of my games with it. The expansions helped a great deal, but not enough to make me love it. I don't even think I bothered to complete the campaigns, something I would usually enjoy doing.

I liked Space Empires IV (V is not as good, I don't think). And MOO / MOO2 are my favorite games in the genre to this day.

I can't afford Endless Space right now, but I do hope it turns out to be a good game. The interface looks really pretty in the videos.

Exact same reason I disliked gal-civ 2. It was just too generic, and if I wanted a generic space 4x I'd go back and play some MoO/2. It's definitely one of those games where I can see the appeal, but don't really like it regardless. Bout the most fun I had with it was designing space ships with utterly ridiculous amounts of spikes on them.

Looking forward to this game, because it looks like something that while generic, will be taking the good of everything else in the genre, tossing out the "bad" and then blending it with its own good. I'm still iffy on the combat system though, I disliked the RPS of gal-civ 2 combat/ship design incredibly. Wondering if this will at least make it somewhat more interesting by making it an active choice or if it will be just as bad.

Campaigns were never really the focus in galciv2, they were always terrible imo...
I personally enjoyed galciv2 immensely nevertheless, in particular with TotA, each race had his own tech tree, superpower, design, you could balance your empire towards evil, good or neutral(with associated techs, alliances and so on), random events were awesome, IA was very good. It wasn't perfect but it was definitely the best 4X I've ever played.

To come back on topic, looking forward to the final version of this game(played the alpha a bit but not enough to make myself a final opinion).

To ignore your futile attempts to drive us back on to topic. I mean seriously you didn't even raise a better topic of discussion. I personally feel if anyone here liked TotA you should play the 4x it ripped off, here's a link, http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/sid_meiers_alpha_centauri , It's less of a spacey sci-fi and more of a Civ style game, but yeah ToTA basically ripped everything good it had off of Alpha Centauri. And Alpha Centauri still did it better and less generically. Alpha Centauri by the way, is my absolute favorite 4X game. MOO/2 holds second place. Followed by Distant Worlds(with the expansions that make it playable, and not garbage) and then 4 is filled simply picking a random paradox 4X game(let's go with Europa Universalis today), followed by Space Empires 4 to round it off.

One last question: What version did everyone buy? I'm thinking about Emperor (extra heroes and skins and so forth), but is the stuff included worth an extra 4bux?

I bought the Emperor edition. Thinking back to it, I believe I did it simply to throw some extra money the dev's way.

Dunno, they are part of some games2gether thing that keeps the players closer to the development, or is supposed to, so I'd guess they update people on whats going on more often than the norm.

They aren't part of it, they basically made it as far as I can tell.

So if you can get steam on mac, then yes. Probably.

You can get Steam on Mac (theres a TF2 item to prove it), but that doesn't mean every game on steam works on mac.
