(Actually: One good game where maneuvering is very important is Nexus: The Jupiter Incident. An excellent tactical space sim which is all about maneuvering and controlling your ship's systems which was overlooked and did not get the attention it deserved. Also an entirely different type of game, not a 4X at all.)

That looks absolutely superb and may scratch an itch I didn't know I had until now.  Someone who isn't me should probably make a thread for this game.

It's on Steam too!

I still go back and replay it sometimes. The company went under which made me sad, I'd hoped for a sequel.

Yes I'm aware of the failed funding attempt. I really don't have much hope for it happening but we'll see. Also let's stop discussing it here. If I have time I'll make a thread for it in a bit.

The AI is actually pretty freaking stupid. It's harsh, but I believe everyone knows it to be true. When this game was first available, the AI was forced to supplement for its incapability by cheat-spawning big fleets to protect its colonies.

You realize that any player can spend dust to near-insta-spawn huge fleets anywhere, yes?

The AI just has a habit of stockpiling HUGE amounts of dust, whereas the player will spend it piecemeal on lots of things.

Unless you think the AI is somehow capable of stockpiling hundreds of thousands of credits before turn 20 (which it isn't because you can check these yourself by going into diplomacy with them or looking at the hex files while the game is in progress), then it's obviously cheating to the degree of a juvenile 13-year old. This is just the tip of the iceberg; I will now provide you with just the most recent accounts of the stupidity the AI. See here:
AI cheating over fleet limits
AI mass spamming cheat fleets and performing impossible actions
AI has unlimited money
More cheating
Even more cheating

Do I need to continue? This is an acknowledged, reported, and unknown-if-will-be-fixed issue. The AI is moronic and loves to cheat. Even looking back a few pages of this thread and you'll see people, me included, bemoaning the AI or lack thereof.

The first one is a bug, it is marked as such, and is in the BUG reports forum.  This is unintended behavior and thus not a valid support for your argument.
The second is a set of complaints about various things, at least one of which is a known bug (non-war/open-borders fleets flying around your systems).
The third is a possible bug which is neither verified nor refuted.
The fourth is a couple of impressions that the AI is doing dumb things.  I see no allegations of cheating aside from the thread title.  It's well known that improvements the AI builds are sub-optimal due to a current lack in the AI.  It will be fixed once a method of determining an improvement's worth on a particular system can be worked out.
The fifth one may in fact be expected, legitimate behavior that simply feels like a dick move.  See: stockpiling large amounts of dust and quick-buying fleets.  The game is obviously late-game, so it's not unreasonable for the AI to have that much dust.  Also, he's playing on impossible and the devs have stated that the AI do get resource handicaps (i.e. free bonus FIDS) on higher difficulties (as of 0.45, I believe, "Easy" is where the AI has no bonus or malus).

Playing cards to eXterminate your opponent seems boring to me.
You haven't actually tried the game have you? You aren't 'playing cards'. This isn't Magic the Gathering. The 'cards' as you call them are just combat tactics which you can use to alter the way the combat plays out. You unlock more advanced tactics depending on your level of research and the hero leading your fleet. You can choose to ignore it, you can autoresolve each fight too.

To be though if your not playing the cards then why would you even watch the battles at all. They are too slow and samey to be enjoyable.
Personally I tend to autocomplete battles unless I have to get an edge, the rest of the game is lots of fun.

Yeah, the battles would be much more interesting if there was more going on. Maneuvers and such. Even the ability to control the camera or mouse over the ships to see their stats would be nice.

Or the launching of fighters.

Fighters could even be tied to phases.

Phase 1 - Long Range: Fighters launch from each fleet and are traveling.
Phase 2 - Medium Range: Fighters meet in the middle and dogfight.
Phase 3 - Short Range: Surviving fighters arrive at the enemy fleet and deploy their heavy weaponry.

Endless Space is now out of beta, and you can now create custom factions.

What is interesting to note is that different affinities have different amounts of points available. United Empire, Cravers, Sophons, Horatio and Hissho get 65 points, while Sowers, Amoeba and Pilgrims get 60.

Standard factions have 2-11 points over their point maximums(because they arent minmaxed). With Sowers being the best at 2 points over max, and Pilgrims the worst at 11 points over max.

The first thing I did was to modify the Sowers to have 2 ranks of optimistic(+20 approval) and 2 ranks of scientists(+20% science). No construction bonus, but who gives a crap when you have those two. Currently in the process of determining how hard I can stomp the AI.
