I love DF, and I love the complexity of it, but sometimes it gets to be a bit much, so I was wondering if there were any simpler alternatives out there. Still needs to be complex enough to actually hold my interest, but half the time I can't even figure out what's happening on DF. lol (Graphics aren't the issue of course. ASCII is fine.)

Towns is inspired by DF. Similar in a lot of ways and I would certainly call it less complex.

Since towns has been already mentioned, i'd say Goblins Camp.

Sadly, i suspect its development has come to an end though.

There's also Paradox yet-to-be-released A game of dwarves, but that looks more of a Dungeon Keeper game than a DF one.

Be advised, Towns is still in alpha.  Features are missing or only partially implemented, and there are serious balance issues and rough edges.  It's been updated quite a bit since it was first brought into open alpha, but most of that was adding new features, not tuning.

A Game of Dwarves looks like it will be a simpler DF.  Probably much simpler.  It isn't available yet.  At last report they're hoping for a 2012 3rd quarter release, and planning for the possibility of slip into 4th quarter.

Website (with trailers); some discussion on this forum; a video review by those annoying Brit twits.

Or maybe some of the God Game genre would fill the hole in your soul.

I grew up on Populous (PC version).  Before I had a mouse, even.  There were over a hundred hotkey combos; I learned most of them by heart.  But I can't recommend it by today's standards.

Do a bit of searching on Black and White, Afterlife, Dungeon Keeper, Virtual Villagers, Spore, or From Dust.

On the topic of God Games, Populous, and Bullfrog you might want to look up Populous 3. Still very playable and much like the spiritual ancestor of From Dust.

If you like the digging and making rooms, get Dungeon Keeper 2.

Somehow, that fills me more with dread than anticipation.  It's like being told that someone's exhuming your favorite grandparent and they're going to try to make her into a cyborg stripper.

Yeah. Most of those arent even RTS's. All they have in common is "blocky world, destroy things"

Knowing Belgium, everyone will vote for themselves out of mistrust for anyone else, and some kind of weird direct democracy coalition will need to be formed from 11 million or so individuals.
