Dwarf fortress copy: A game of dwarves
« on: May 01, 2012, 12:50:18 pm »

Haven't posted anything on the forums before but I found something fairly significant that I thought the community might take interest in.

Paradox apparently is creating a game called A Game of Dwarves.  It looks like a straight copy of DF, simpler concepts and better graphics.

Here is a info bit

Who cares?

And FYI, Paradox publishes it. They didn't create it.

It's not a copy, and it has been discussed to death in perhaps a dozen different threads.  Contrary to popular belief, toady didn't invent dwarves or fortresses.

*Sigh* another thread about how the gaming industry sucks and everyone is copying dwarf fortress by adding shiny new graphics to something related to dwarfs, mountain and underground.

It is closer to dungeon keeper than DF.

Somehow, that fills me more with dread than anticipation.  It's like being told that someone's exhuming your favorite grandparent and they're going to try to make her into a cyborg stripper.

hey relax guys
I only put the title up to bring the understanding that a game similar to DF exists not so much as "GAWD THEY COPIED TOADYS WORK LAMMEEE!"

Sorry if this was old news, just thought it was interesting news.

Also I know paradox is the publisher.....i was just too lazy to actually find the name of the developer.

Oh, Armok, not again. I think I said it best in another thread, just yesterday:

All I can accuse these guys of is not knowing about DF's anger-happy fanbase.

We have a certain good (building game starring dwarves), and we don't want anyone else to make it. You know what that makes us like? ELVES! BY COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS KIND OF THING, YOU'RE MIMICKING AN ELF!!

Dwarves & Fortresses sounds like a better tabletop game than Dungeons & Dragons.

I may just be rambling here, but couldn't that game be used as basically an introduction into dwarf fortress?  Such as, people begin by playing that game, and when they think the game is far too easy, DF players introduce them to DF, a far more difficult game that is basically about the same thing, and get a few of those people hooked to this game.  Using that logic, we could use this game as a route to DF conversion.  Possibly.

By that logic, DungeonKeeper would be a good introduction to Dwarf Fortress.

This game is more like DungeonKeeper than Dwarf Fortress. The only difference, really, is the theme and setting. The gameplay is almost identical.

Sure, but you didn't think to spend a few seconds checking past posts. Same as the posters of the last thirty threads about this game.

It's more of a Theme Hospital kind of thing rather than DF.
