All those little vermin - rats.  3 minutes ago, they were not there.  Then suddenly, Willard gets a sequel - in my food stockpile.

Neither. You simply magmaplosion all of them once you move your food stockpile out (bonus points if you dwarf it out and deal with the loss of the food instead). Sure it's more effort but hey, two birds with one stone. Also it would clean out the blood and body bits pretty well. I GUESS you could just assign them to a pasture under a bridge and erase them from existence but....Where's the fun in that?

That should be a new type of project, making a rug design in dwarf fortress (With accurate coloring)

Ratsplosion would be worse. Cats don't consume your food; in fact cats can increase your food stockpile since you can butcher them.

Magma won't do much either. Rats (and other vermin) will literally spawn from nothing if there's food to be gnawed at.

Magma will remove the food, solving the problem for good.

Purchase male cats, and only male cats, from the trade caravan.  Make a pasture zone over your food stockpiles and assign the cats to it.

I cannot see the rats.

The clean dot perfectly centered in the square = rat.  All the commas and such are the dirt.  (peat) For reference, all the dots amongst the barrels are rats.
