The current wiki page for bolts in DF2012 doesn't really go into much detail that would pertain to my question, other than wood bolts being decent in 2012, and copper bolts being able to pierce adamantine.
I'm just wondering if making bolts out of a higher quality metal, like iron, steel, or adamantine would cause the bolts to be even more powerful than the copper counterpart that I've seen most people settle for.

Like the last 10 threads on this topic, any metal works wonders, the difference isn't noticeable.

Silver bolts are best. Because bolts use [BLUNT:NUMBER] they are similar to flying warhammers. Adamantite would be worthless in bolts.

Oh, didn't notice the [BLUNT] in the raws.
Under that logic, would gold and platinum be even better?

Very.

Edit: Wait, no. Silver is harder, bolts need to be hard. Gold and Platinum would likely bounce off.

Actually if you check the raws bolts use EDGE attacks.
Code: [Select]
[ITEM_AMMO:ITEM_AMMO_BOLTS]
[NAME:bolt:bolts]
[CLASS:BOLT]
[SIZE:150]
[ATTACK:EDGE:2:2000:stab:stabs:NO_SUB:1000]

[ITEM_AMMO:ITEM_AMMO_ARROWS]
[NAME:arrow:arrows]
[CLASS:ARROW]
[SIZE:150]
[ATTACK:EDGE:2:2000:stab:stabs:NO_SUB:1000]

[ITEM_AMMO:ITEM_AMMO_BLOWDARTS]
[NAME:blowdart:blowdarts]
[CLASS:BLOWDART]
[SIZE:20]
[ATTACK:EDGE:1:50:stick:sticks:NO_SUB:1000]
The main reason that heavier material work better with bolts is more that they can give more energy to the bolt and allow it to pack a harder punch.

So does [EDGE] mean that steel and adamantine are actually fair play?

Steel, yes.
Adamantine, no.

Steel is just below steel, pretty much the same as all other normal metals.
Bluemetal bolts are terrible.

Bluemetal bolts are terrible.
Except for creating more adamantine out of the melting bug.

But yeah, adamantine bolts are so light that they don't really do any damage when they hit stuff. Steel works out pretty well, though I don't know if it or silver would come out on top.

I would imagine that bluemetal bolts suck, despite being infinitely sharp, because of their flimsy density (Just below that of cork wood, IIRC).

Bolts in this game are ridiculously op, lost three dwarfs + two wounded to bloody silver goblin crossbowmen (pun intended).

I agree, but nothing we can do when people voted for improved hauling and mine carts.  In fact there's nothing listed for battles or military within the eternal suggestion voting until around number 38.  Yes, even "Feces and urine" is more important than improving and balancing battles.  Just what we all need a game with options to micromanage body waste.  I see it now... ... ... hmmm why do those pipes keep breaking and flooding my hallways with the feces and urine... well time to make more soap and buckets.    :-\   [Sarcasm]Yeahhh someday I will be able to brag about being one of the best plumbers and waste management for dwarves. [/Sarcasm]

Our only hope is Toady will play more dwarf fortress games and also gain interest for balancing battles/sieges and improving military.  It's on the development list... we just need to wait.

I had to laugh at the OP question. People don't "settle for copper". They make it from any metal they have too much from and are not using. 200 silver bars? make some bolts. 150 bronze? I've got steel and silver, let's make some bolts.

Toady has said he will never implement feces and urine in DF.  Also, don't trash talk our hauling and minecarts.  You'll be thanking him when cleaning up after a siege is 20x faster.  I like a bloody chaotic field of battle sometimes over a nice compact self-cleaning magma trap.

I agree the mine carts are a great idea and will help with overall map cleanup, but if having a choice over minecarts for faster cleanup or balancing battle stuff so copper bolts aren't easily piercing adamantine armor as listed in the bug I would choose balancing the battle stuff because cleaning up the battlefield faster won't make me feel any better when my legendary soldier with adamantine armor is dead from a copper bolt.
