Hell, I'm an atheist because religion makes no sense and Marcus Aurelius nailed it: "Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones." What more could one require?

Nothing, nothing at all. Ultimately, that's what you should do. Live a good life.

I am an atheist so I can gain entry into all the wild atheist bacchnals. Theist parties have too many arbitrary, antiquated rules, and the only refreshment is a little sip of wine and a sliver of bread. Agnostics are not sure who’s party to attend.

... there's something hilarious about the phrase atheist bacchanal. Something about it just doesn't quite fit :P

What about neutral gods?

Come on, join me and become a pantheist!

I'm a pragmatist. I worship whoever, or whatever, promises the most immediate reward. For instance, currently, I worship Sandwich.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

But worshiping it would mean not eating it.
...Wait, Christians eat their god all the time. Carry on then.

What about neutral gods?
They don't care about me and I don't care about them.

Perhaps the title should be changed to "Analytic Thinking can Undermine (religious) Belief and lead to complex yet polite internet arguments".

or maybe Valve goes out of business because they invested too heavily in something which then fails - like, say, human civilization.
Alternatively, initiate strife to refuse additional baked goods, and then abscond.

Agnostics go to whichever party has better booze. Theists bring wine, but very little, and atheists have vodka, but that vodka is pretty much pure alchohol, and some people have difficulty drinking it.

I go with vodka myself.

only on B12.

Meh, politeness is overrated if the other side doesn't abide the rules of the game. It's not like one has to sit down and be quiet as the others take a piss on you.

"You deserve to burn in hell forever!" "I disagree" <-- "Polite" discussion
"You deserve to burn in hell forever!" "Fuck you!" <-- Intolerant atheist!

Only if said piss is literal.

I kinda wish there was more screaming, but rocks don't hurt so I guess it can't be helped.

This thread is only as quiet as it is because I think most of us remember the Atheism, Atheism Redux, and Athe only knows how many other atheism threads we've had in the past. It turns out you can only go on for about 20 pages before the same arguments cycle through again.

A good rule is to never EVER pull up our friend God on an internet forum for any reason.
