What's the lightest possible thing to make out of stone?
« on: April 28, 2012, 08:18:33 am »

So I'm experiencing the overly common "stone overload" problem. I really want to know the lightest thing I can make out of stone so that I could produce loads of trade goods without overloading the wagons.

(The elves only get lame things made of shells in my forts. And one or two pots of plump helmet wine, to try to civilize them. The stone objects only need to fit on the wagons.)

Any ideas and/or humorous ways to misinterpret this question?

Cabochons. Though I'd always go for doors.

Well, at my last/current embark I have loads of gold, so I just trade with gold crafts. It's lovely.

So as for generic stone overload, someone on this forum had the nice idea of blocks; blocks are good as they can be binned and still used for all sorts of tasks.

Wouldn't stone crafts probably be the smallest things? Earrings and whatnot. I at least remember off the top of my head that (admittedly) wood earrings can be less than an in-game gram.

Crafts. Maybe mugs.

I'd guess mugs as well. It makes the most sense, logistics-wise.

Only in Dwarf Fortress is the value of life placed as "aesthetic."

When you craft a mug out of stone, you get three mugs from one piece of stone.  If your goal is to turn excess stone into easily-removed trade goods, mugs are not a good choice, resulting in three times the number of goods as other options.

I'll second cabochons.  You get one per stone, they don't seem to weigh much, and it's a good way to train up your jeweler before letting them work on actual valuable gems.

Crafts. Also, make sure you have enough rock pots.

Seriously, though, I long ago gave in to cheating using DFHack to just delete the extra stone. I figure that it's no different from hiding it, except that it's no longer cluttering up my Stocks screen.

You can atom-smash it if you're more scrupulous about it than me.

You could always just carve it all into blocks, and use them for projects, megaprojects, and administration.

Better yet: Have a spare dwarf have siege operation and little else. Set up a catapult firing into a hole right in front of a wall. Put a mason's or mechanic's workshop right underneath said hole. Have the catapult fire at will, with the workshop set to make stuff on repeat. Useful stuff, like statues (luring building destroyers, outdoor statue gardens, etc), or blocks (constructions), or mechanisms (complex stuff), or whatever.

I don't see any way this can go wrong. Carry on.

It won't damage anything as falling objects and catapults don't do damage. (the latter is not to friendles only)

Pave your whole map. Gives a lot of dwarfs something to do.
