Survive without trees around [challange]
« on: April 27, 2012, 08:46:30 am »

Some days ago I accidently embarked to an area with no trees and shrubs (luckely a river).
As I often do, I started without anything at all (beside the wagon and two animals that come by default).

I tried my best to survive and actually got a hunter and could carve some bones and stuff.

Think a good challange for you?

try to survive and get a thriving fortress, starting in a biome without trees and shrubs and without any equipment.
Trading is allowed so the challange actually is to survive until you can trade.
[edit]You have to trade at some point to fullfill this challange.

Not that much of a challenge at all. Metal beds, stone bins, bone crossbows. Wood can be easily replaced, and there is plenty of it in the caverns as well.

aight, forgot about the bins. >.> You can still make them outta metal, though.

As stated: As soon as you can trade, the challange is over. :) Survive till then (and don't make a mistake so you can't trade when the caravan finally arrives.

The embark site of my current fort had surface vegetation at all, and an aquifer below the first soil layer.  I brought a decent amount of wood and stone, but it was still a fun challenge, a race to breach the aquifer in order to open up the caverns to start tree growth in subterranean soil layers.  I dug out a large series of 11x11 rooms  in the first layer, and this allowed a decent trickle of local wood production after the first year.  I was also importing as much wood from all three trading civs, but even then I had issues keeping up supply for the first 5 years.  Its been a pretty fun challenge (if not a dominating one), that just requires some advanced planning and budgeting of log use.

Metal beds, stone bins

Sounds like you haven't done this challenge.

My ideal embark is rocky wasteland, badlands, or glacier, so there are no trees on the embark level.  First thing I do is dig straight down, breach the caverns, seal them up, then come back up and dig out the entire soil layer(s) and grow underground trees on it.  After the first year, I have far more trees than I'll ever need.  Metal or Stone beds would of course, negate this requirement entirely, unless I wanted to make steel and had no coal.  :D

Please keep in mind that the challange here is to bring no equipment. So there is no digging down. :)

I've done this, deconstruct Wagon and make 2 training axes and a carpenters. ....
Wait, no trees, no picks, no axes, ok so you're pretty screwed :P
You can make a butchers and a kitchen, then you have food and need to wrestle wildlife to death.

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

Yes. You've got it. You can actually get a hunter. Just remember you have to build a Trade Depot at some point.
I failed at that the first time I found myself in that situation, thats why I thought it might be a little challange (I think I am a not so bad player).

Also note: Without a watersource you are screwed here.

Deconstruct wagon. Build still and carpenters. Build barrel. Deconstruct carpenters. Build fishery. Build farm plot and plant overground seeds.

As long as your dwarves can survive the combat, they can now survive indefinitely.

It'd be the epitome of DullFortress though.

First: No shrubs, so no aboveground farming.
Second: Your barrel might get filled with plants and stuff (had that happen)
Third: How do you build your Trade Depot? Okay, not part of the challange.

Lets make part of the challange to trade at some point.

Lets make part of the challange to trade at some point.

Deconstruct wagon.
Build fishery (water source must exist if we don't have brewable plants otherwise it's just an hour of watching dwarves dehydrate and starve).
Deconstruct fishery when the traders arrive and build a trade depot with the 3 wood. Trade excess fish products for picks and brewable plants or if you're willing to "cheat" then just deconstruct the depot and steal everything.

Picks mean we can now get into the floor.
Brewable plants give us seeds which we can plant. Also booze which can be stored in rock pots. Deconstruct depot and use the wood to make 3 beds to try and combat the slept on the floor thought.

Pretty sure that's everything. It's just a tediously slow start to the game.

Yeah. Some challenges are. Never saw this one though and it happened by accident.

I actually built a butcher, a bowyer and a craftsdwarfshop made bone crossbow and bolts, deconstructed some the bowyer for tanner, had the leather tanned, deconstructed the tanner, build leatherworks for quiver and started hunting.
Before I came up with this, I thought I could milk my animals, so I had a bucket made ... fail, as now I wasn't ever able to build the trade depot.

The fishing came to me after I abandoned the fortress.

In the next try there were actually two very small patches with trees and shrubs, so I could make a carpenter and training axe.
But my barrels got filled with plants and stuff because I had just one food pile and no extra pile for drinks.
Still survived because of the river.

If you ever find yourself in that kind of situation again the wiki can help

So how is this a challenge for dwarves ? For Elves it would be probably the most horrible torture ever, but we're not elves.
