Incidentally, this is not the first battle to take place. I didn't notice anyone rushing to respond to the sound of cannon fire when Leonard returned fire on a wyvern that destroyed one of his ships
((That was presumably much shorter and smaller in scale, and didn't generate a cannon fire report for me.))

((Wyvern battle was a single firing, this one was an hour-long battle.))

this one was an hour-long battle

Was it?

Imperial flagship hailed me, demanding my surrender. I said no and fired. Flagship returned fire then asked me what I was doing. And that's all that's happened until the next update. From my point of view I would have guessed the battle had been going on for under a minute, but we're experiencing time dilation because of the mechanical constraints of this being a forum game.

Is one firing volley really an hour? Did the imperial commander really hail me after an hour of combat to ask me what I was doing?

You're thinking under the presumption that most of them weren't pot shots, and that it was a constant stream of cannon fire.

You're thinking under the presumption that most of them weren't pot shots, and that it was a constant stream of cannon fire.

I'm not sure what you mean by that, but to clarify...I was thinking that a single volley was a single volley. After you fire a cannon it then might take take a minute to clean the muzzle, pack with new powder and put in a new cannonball.

My view was that the the dialogue was happening during that reload time. I fired a single volley, his gunners immediately reacted by counter firing, then their commander hailed me to ask how dare I fire on him while both our gunners are reloading. One minute, tops.

If this has been a full hour of continuous exchanged fire...that changes things a bit. Sky, is that what's going on here? One combat "attack roll" is actually a simulation of an entire hour of firing?

Generally, each round of battle is a whole hour. Ships don't sink by a single volley of cannons. In this case, some time dilation may have been involved.

Hmm. Ok.

Message to fleet:

General Kementari, do you require aid? What are you firing at?

*responding on open fleet channel*

: Negative, captain. We've sustained no casualties so far, but the situation presents serious risk of damage from friendly fire. Thank you for the offer of aid, but I recommend all fleets avoid the combat zone. We don't need this escalating into an unintended, unwanted war.

Fleet channel again:

Casualties from what, General? What are you fighting, and why is there an increased risk of friendly fire?

Turn 0.5, 5 hours after the exodus

EagleV error: no character profile

The scout scouts the northern area.

The other two dip down and attempt to collect the vines with a metal claw. However, a single scout loses control for a moment and its hull brushes the ground. It instantly loses hull integrity and falls apart. [-1 scout.]

The vines rust the metal claw, so the crew hastily retract the claw and return.

Edit seeder info to [3 seeders : 3 plots : 1 day]

Gregorin Atmos

Not having corpses or implants on hand, your mages fail to conduct any experiments in the way of behavior of raised corpses, metal grafted to flesh, and flesh grafted to metal.

It also seems that cantrips do not work well - most of the mages had to try two or three times before creating a cup of water from the moisture in the air - but the technology-magic keeping the ships afloat is fine.

The grey matter, seen up close, is some sort of rock. Your scouts can see that the matter rises sharply to form a peak.

Argetor Archmagus

No people come forward to bravely try the wheat-like plant. It is too foreign for anyone to risk it. [Civilians are sent a square south to start digging out a simple quarry : 3 turns.]
Housing can be started right now, for "3 clippers : 1 housing district : 0.3 turns" or "3 clippers : 3 housing districts : 1 turn". Farming can be started, for the same rates as housing.

If you do not write down your projects, they will be counted as not done at all.

Argus

You send two scouts flying north-east, while the main fleet goes north-west. [Scouts to continue for .6 turns to north-east].

The main fleet heads north-west, and soon meets an adversary : a beast with a long neck, what seems to be flippers for fore and rear, and huge wings that pour out a copious stream of seawater. It screeches, before taking flight.

Azalyn

"But the heavenly mandate has passed on to the son -"

You order the ships to fire, including your own.

The shudder of cannon recoil shakes the ship; you look over the port side and watch a hail of small iron balls spread out from the various cannonports.

(The bottom is the equivalent of a 'saving throw'.)

8 scouts, 4 cruisers, 2 strafers, 1 flagship

Spoiler: Scouts (click to show/hide)
1 hit.
Spoiler: Cruisers (click to show/hide)
Cumulative 3 hits
Spoiler: Strafer (click to show/hide)
C. 4 hits.

Most of the scouts' attacks glance off the hull of the imperial ship, but the more heavily armed cruisers and strafers manage to punch through. From what your vantage point, looking through a pair of lens, you can see that most of the soldiers and sailors that were on the deck are either bleeding from heavy wounds, or dead, riddled with pockmarks. The deck is smashed through like Swiss cheese.

There is no further complaint.

You send a couple of your scouts and their soldiers over.

After thirty minutes, they complete the securing of the ship and report that all except for a few civilians and sailors are dead. The royal family's current heir, the son, is in a coma from loss of blood and is expected to die soon. A pair of soldiers carry out your orders and hasten the arrival of death and sever the heads of him and his wife, drain the blood, and package it in a pretty, new, and white box that is scented with jasmine, as per your wishes.

A scout, while circling the ship, notices the nameplate and contacts your ship, informing you that her name is (was?) the Hebecin.

Record:

[3 seeders - 3 farms - 1 turn]
[3 clippers - 1 drydock - 1 turn] (these two will be finished by turn 2.)

The mages from the arcani and from your flagship meet and start talking. They will require further input soon, on the precise usage of the elementals. They also inform you (politely, of course) that neither elementals nor mages can easily turn soil into rock.

Solona Please add your profile in spoilers; else, I will have to void the turn. It already takes a long time to do each turn even without the scrolling for profiles.

Record:

[1 clipper :: Lumber mill :: 3 turns]
[1 seeder : 1 farms :: 1 turn]
[Mine :: 3 turns]

Jamnan

You are about to start towards Azalyn when you watch her mercilessly pound the imperial ship with grapeshot.

Entren

Scouts keep heading south. The southernmost scout spots what seems to be a lake.

(Uh...I think I misplaced your building information. Can you repost it or PM me what you are going to make?)

The arcani and your flagship join with the rest of the fleet.

Salavev

You send the cruisers and scouts back towards the cannonfire, while the rest of the fleet heads south.

By the time they get within bare sight distance, the situation is already over. The heavily holed imperial ship is being boarded by Azalyn's troops.

Try the wheat-like plant myself. No fear! Let's hope I am not dead.

Start project housing and farming at a pace of 1 housing district and 1 farming district for .6 and continue quarry for now.

Gregorin Atmos' fleet skirts northwards around the mountain, still following the coast.
Gregorin (partly) jokingly asks if anyone wishes to donate their bodies to science.
The mages try some divining rituals, seeing if they can get a glimpse of what is further to the east.

I had the clippers building cabins, the seeders building a farm plot, and the civilians setting up tents. There should be something like that on the last turn, and in my last post. I can't quite update this second, though.
