Stupid migrants...

OK, total newbie to DF here. A migrant wave arrived, trippling the amount of Dorfs I had in my fortress. Great, fourteen threshers, millers or shearers. Only good thing? I got a master Diagnoser. Great, I didn't even have a military.
Then, it hit me. Why are immigrants always so bad? Let's say you control the parent civ. Who would you send to a new fortress that could be destroyed in ywo minutes or less? Indeed, your useless dorfs and not the awesome dorfs.
Think about it. It's pretty logical.

Within a year, two at the most, those fourteen dwarves will be legendary at whatever jobs you decide they should have instead of what they came with. Adding a single stonecrafter, for example, will keep (at least) four dwarves employed.  One to make stone or toys, and three others to haul away the products of each job.

Or draft them all into your military. You'd probably need a danger room or some such intensive training facility to make them efficacious.

I don't think it is very logical at all.  If you sent non-crappy dwarves, then the place would do a lot better, and new migrants WOULDN'T die within two minutes anymore...

There's no reason to go colonize some place if you don't even care what happens at your colony.

They should not only send good migrants, but also a team of temporary guards and miners to help out at the beginning until a beachhead is established, if they really want a good return on their investments.  Especially since they already send a huge group of skilled people every year in the form of a caravan (which they are perfectly happy to have smashed to bits every year and still send more).  Silliness.

Changing things wouldn't make for better gameplay, necessarily, but just from an in-character point of view, they're being pretty dumb.

It's not that the mountainhomes don't care about what happens to their colony, it's that they wish ill upon it and thus swamp it with useless idiots who would otherwise be consuming the mountainhome's food.

Plus, there's probably a betting pool going at the royal casino on how long the desert fortress will survive after being given thirty elderly fish dissectors.

this is a game where your fort can get smashed to bits by a conga line of dancing badgers. Making it any easier at all wouldn't be so much fun.

Dwarves passing by get good thoughts from the mist of water and exploding felines.
Anyone of the equivalent to the royal bloodline in a nomadic group would have a sun tattooed on their hand, or a scrotum on their forehead (it's a little-known fact that fraternities are based off of long-forgotten tribes).

You're presuming someone is "sending them". I always presumed they mostly just hear about your fort and how good it's doing and they *decide* to come themselves, which would work quite better at explaining their skill sets. :) They just group up few times a year and decide to come to you.

Your home civ only send *nobles* in an organized manner.

As in, once your fort is already doing good on its own, they aim to cash in on your success. Effin politicians!

I always thought all the dorfs that were kicked out of or weren't excepted into all the other mountainhomes would find your base, and since you can't refuse them, they get to live "happy" lives in your fort. Yayz

Oh and since the 2012 update, a lot of your immigrants will be the survivors of the last fort. That's the cause for some quite weird consequences, like having dwarves immigrate and die instantly because they just bled to death. Nevermind how they managed to get from your last fort to the new one with heavy bleeding? :D Or getting 20 miserable dwarves that tantrum and kill your new original 7 dwarves in the process... :D

That's something that made it quite unappealing to start a new fort in the same world after abandoning a large one before during a tantrum spiral... -.-

Lots of people asked for it, so that their legendary Gods of Battle Axelords would live on when they abandoned a fort due to FPS death.

And it's pretty easy to avoid the problem of tantrum/injured migrants if you juts let things take their natural course instead of quitting mid-FUN.
