Help With Ambushes
« on: April 25, 2012, 09:47:58 pm »

Last 2 Goblin Ambushes I had craft dwarves run around getting in the way and a few ended up dieing.  Is there anyway to confine them to a safe area till the attack is over?

Define a burrow with the w menu, activate it with m-a and select it. Civilian alerts.

Is it because light travels faster than sound,
that people appear bright until you hear them speak?

War Giant Lions. Assign 10 of those to every dwarf that you have in your fortress and you will never need to worry about an ambush again, and probably won't have to worry about several of the smaller sieges. Alternatively you can simple assign 2 War Rocs to each dwarf and never need to worry about their safety from anything short of a deadly syndrome titan again.

But to answer your original question OP:
Define a burrow with the w menu, activate it with m-a and select it. Civilian alerts.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

I dug a moat around the entire perimeter of the map, with a wall on the top of it. I have an ocean on the side of the map for easy fishing, and a draw bridge to allow merchants access. Yet to have a single ambush since I set it up right away. You could easily do something like this if you assign a few extra dwarves to mining and remove the ramps from the moat, no need for a wall if you are only preventing ambushes, walls just help stop archers shooting over.

That should be a new type of project, making a rug design in dwarf fortress (With accurate coloring)

Give them a fancy mist generator and some nice food and they should be able to dodge any unhappy thoughts from their friends dying. And any berserk dwarves should be instantly put down by their pets. :P
