A question for those that make massive surface buildings
« on: April 25, 2012, 10:11:10 am »

I'm currently building one as part of a megaproject and I'm curious to know; how exactly are the multi-level roofs made?  Is there a particular method of scaffolding used to get dwarves up there that can be quickly (and reasonably safely) dismantled afterwards?

Well, I just use ramps and walls.

Always try a few scale models first. Ramps make sloping roofs/etc look better in visualizers. You can either build from the outside or build from the inside. That's about all I've learned so far. I don't know any fancy tricks.

Yeah, I think this is what I need to do, I was just overthinking it a bit amidst everything else I'm building in this fort.  Cheers

Build stairs and floors 1 tile back from the structure, then bridges over to the roof.  When deconstructing, you get everyone to safety (or not) and cave-in the scaffolding.  My usual method is to build pillars of stairs, each atop a support, and then bridges between the pillars, and more bridges from the pillars to the working surface.  When it's time to bring it down, you deconstruct the access bridges, leaving the scaffolding separated from the wall, and then burrow everyone inside and have someone Pull The Lever.

This is also great for casting obsidian.

I build more on surface than underground, but most often I do not dismantle scaffolds. Instead I try to disguise them in the structure, make safe (for example by removing bottom segment of a staircase) or in some cases turn them off - retractable bridges. All this to allow repairs and retrieval of body parts. Scaffolds themselves are usually very simple, and put strategically, only where needed. One of the most often used scaffold item is a hatch, which is great for corner walls and such. I remove hatches after use. I tried cavein scaffolds, but use them only when there's no other option. Bridges, even not mechanised (often removed after use) are safer. Well, safer on dismantling, during actual building bridges are dangerous because dwarves try to attach walls and floors to them when possible... But what are job suspensions for? :)

I construct the exterior walls two tiles thick. Walls dividing up rooms are also two tiles thick. Internal walls, like the divider between a dwarf's office and bedroom, are only a single tile thick.

Also each room will have its own window, which will be just a glass block wall a single tile thick. Can't have too many windows in heavy masonry walls due to the weight of the wall.

Each building has roof access from the internal stairway just in case something gets on the roof, somehow.

I prefer building the scaffolding as part of the structure itself. Saves a lot of time. All you need are the plots of the building on the ground in walls, series of stairs e.t.c.

Otherwise, just cave it all in. Quickest and potentially safest method there is.

This or lots and lots of up/down stairs.

i build towers from the inside.  one tile of flooring i designate as up stairs, i build matching down stairs the next level up, floor it/roof the level below, add walls, and have one floor tile as the stairs top the next level up.

i tend to move the stairs around to accommodate for internal rooms and also to stymie any invaders that happen to make it in.

I also build from the inside.  I plan the staircases so that they can be used to get to and from the construction site, as well as be useful parts of the structure when completed.

Up/down staircases (X) work best for this, as you can stack them on top of each other endlessly.

If you want a tempoary scaffolding, building a ramp next to a support, then building the up/downs on top of the support will give you a quck and easy way to demolish it when done.

The way I do it is this:

1. First, I decide where the corners of the tower will be and place the walls. I leave a single tile open next to one the corner walls.

I.I
.
I

Something like that with the periods representing the floor tile. After the corners are constructed, I put ramps in the floor tiles.

2. As the wall goes up, I have dwarves begin placing floors.  At the same time, I have a stairwell going up and put in place with floors around that so that the floor is being constructed from as many different locations as possible. When the floors are completed, I go back to step one and use a different corner on the current floor. Meanwhile, the previous ramps are deconstructed and the stone is used to build a wall in that spot since the floor above is accessible via stairwell now.

And so on until I get to the desired height; the top floor is completed when the ramps are removed and replaced with the walls that make up the last sections.

The only time I use any scaffolding or temporary floors is when I am building downwards and need a corner put in place.

oh, and remember to keep stockpiles near the building site, it really speeds construction.
