A birth moment.
« on: April 24, 2012, 10:07:07 pm »

Brand new fort beside a volcano, Autum first year.
*Random Name*,*Profession* has given birth to a boy.

I must have read wrong, too early to someone give birth already.
...
No, its there, it really is a birth.
I [a],[z] to the place: the depths of the volcano, unexplored pitch black.
What?
I look again at the Birth.
Seng Qhermansar,Gremlin*Profession* has given birth to a boy.
Oh wow! A gremlin gave birth and THE WHOLE MOUNTAIN shake at the event. Must have, for my fort to know about it.

And then as I absorved the information my eyes re-read the birth event, properly this time:
Seng Qhermansar,Gremlin Bowman has given birth to a boy.
Bowman...
BowMAN? What the hell?!

Must have happened to someone else. But it's a first to me.
Edit: I just noticed that the birth took place 127z levels of stone beneath the fortress.

If a creature has unspecified titles, then it defaults to "bowman" for all genders.  In this case, "man" is in the method of "mankind", not "male".  Even though it's a grimlin in specific.  Sorta like "craftsdwarf" does not denote "male crafter".

Although overall curious, at least you've confirmed something strange and beautiful, that non-dwarven intelligent beings will give birth.

Indeed. Remind me of the DFTalk, Toady mentioned that once worldgen ends and you embark, your fort is the only location in the world births can happen, everywhere is is sterile and dying off.

Interesting to see a non-dwarf/animal birth, for sure.

Gremlin farms!  Chain them up and make them operate levers!

Anyway... isn't it only Civ capable creatures that are funny about reproducing rather then intelligent creatures?  But if the gremlin is a non-civ bowgrem where did she get her bow?

Just because the grimlin is of a certain profession doesn't mean they carry the tools with them.

I think the player should only receive that type of annoucement from a friendly source. Or at least the option to add a filter.

The Gremlin was 127z lvls underground, I still hadn't time to breach caves, thus he/she wasn't even on my unit list.

Also:
I think i've read somewhere that once you breach caves you receive a little FPS drop from the wild life down there.
It's wrong then? Because I sometimes even know that I'm beside the cave when bees/honeybees/flying critter just hover in the dark unexplored area underneath.

Edit: At the next spring:
Seng Qhermansar,Gremlin Bowman has given birth to a girl.
Erm...whats going on down there?

Are you using masterwork mod? It has gremlin cave civs.

Lolololol.

Ya, is there a mod? I've not seen anything in my caverns when I reveal, only when I breach. Masterwork cave civ would make sense.

The same damn Gremlin has given birth every 8 months or so.
The damn babys are turning into Children!
Soon I'll have to breach that cave just to stop the Birth Machine!
Or later...so I'll have to deal with an Gremlin entire family army!

that's pretty awesome.  From the gestational period, can you be sure that the conception happened right as you embarked?

I think it had.
I mean...First early/mid autumn(still haven't got the hang of the Stone Calendar) she had the first boy.
Then just after the first days of the second year Spring she had the first girl.
Since then I've been receiving, once in a while, the announcement that she gave birth to another baby AND sometimes that one of her babys became a child.

I fear that if stick to this fortress long enough(I intend to) I might get to see that a Child became an adult.
I would be delighted to see it happen and perhaps see one of them become a...say...Spearman?

Should I count the months of pregnacy? The time to be a child we can find in the raws.
For science? XD

I love this. "Man, this weird thing just happened, whatwhy?" followed by several pages of discussion until somone think s to ask, "Using masterwork?"

But we don't really need to ask, do we? It's a given. "Hey this weird thing happened!" is pretty much a guarantee they are using a mod that totally changes the game, but no one EVER feels that that fact is important enough to mention.
