Crank cackles as he is first across the line.  Just keep this up and it's all good.

"Good lap, but what will happen with the second?"

Aggressive driving, hit the dash panels and an item box.

((Just me and the goomba now, unless one of the other four pulls something amazing out of their asses. And Toaster? No-one has the momentum to do so :P))

It's a bit interesting to compare the start position of lap 2 with the start of lap 1. Toaster has maintained his #1 position and actually has more Momentum than when he started- everyone else has less. Captain Falcon and Zelda have moved up at the expense of Luigi and Dry Bones, and MML is in the same position he started with. It's something I've been keeping a loose eye on throughout the season to make sure good Rocket Starts aren't insurmountably good, and I'm pretty happy with how it's worked out.

(Bah, I thought the first ram pass didn't cause you to lose momentum. Oh well.)DB chuckled as he saw Luigi head for the edge, followed by a slightly dissapointed look when he saved himself, and finally a confused look when he passed him again, or at least someone that vaguely looked like him. "Well I've had my fun, time to show these people why they call us rockets!" DRIVE AGGRESSIVELY

(This'd be the point where I'd throw the controller at the screen)

Another explosion rocks the Blue Falcon, and the captain now found himself dead in the water and two of the other racers zooming past him. He was going to have to get back to speed while fighting off the rest of the vultures.

RAM!

(Funnily enough I just returned from some go-karting myself.  This game's more fun :P )

Vaati grins as the racers pass him at the finish line, reserving a scowl for the second-place Zelda.
"This track is rather dangerous already.  It would be a shame if it were to become even more hazardous..."
So saying he whips up a small tornado, which spins out of control and lands somewhere behind him, flinging popcorn everywhere.
"That... was not my intention."

Really, there's nothing better for me to do.  Ram is pretty much the default action for a clear lead if you already have the momentum to pull ahead, since it's closest to a null action.  (It's a toss up between it and powerslide here, and I wager ram to be slightly better.)

I think the kicker with rocket starts is while on average they're the smart play, a failure can put you in last place at the start, which is worse than doing so in the beginning of the actual game would do to you.  It's not a bad thing, just a quirk of the rules.

Rainbow Road- Turn Nine

1st      2nd      3rd      4th      5th     6th

Action Phase

Crank cackles as he is first across the line.  Just keep this up and it's all good.

"Good lap, but what will happen with the second?"

RAM any fool that tries to pass me!

Crank adopts a defensive posture, ready to Ram any opponents who dare show their faces as he leads his way into the RED downhill plunge!

Aggressive driving, hit the dash panels and an item box.

((Just me and the goomba now, unless one of the other four pulls something amazing out of their asses. And Toaster? No-one has the momentum to do so :P))

Zelda puts the pedal to the metal as she tries to catch up to Crank, [1] but her sudden acceleration is poorly timed, and she loses contact with the track as she drives over the drop! For a bad moment she thinks she might do a front flip straight downhill, but thankfully her front wheels touch down, giving her enough traction to bring the rest of the Kart down! She skids a bit, losing ONE Momentum and taking a -1 Penalty to Hazard Checks as she works to regain control of her careening Kart!

(This'd be the point where I'd throw the controller at the screen)

Another explosion rocks the Blue Falcon, and the captain now found himself dead in the water and two of the other racers zooming past him. He was going to have to get back to speed while fighting off the rest of the vultures.

RAM!

Captain Falcon is enraged by the abuse he's receiving from the other Karts, and resolves to Ram the next fool he passes!

Dry Bones duplicates Zelda's burst- [1] and her gravitational distress! Much like the Princess, DB loses ONE Momentum and takes a -1 Penalty to Hazard Checks as he struggles to safely control his careening Kart!

Drive Aggressively and aim for the Dash Panel and Item Box.

The Mysterious Mr. L hears the screams of Dry Bones and Princess Zelda, and takes a more cautious approach. [2] Too cautious, it appears, as he carefully rides the brake down the slope, gaining no Momentum!

Drive aggressively

(My rolls can't all be bad... can they?)

[3] Although Luigi takes a more aggressive line than his odd doppelganger, it still isn't enough to bridge the gap between himself and the rest of the pack! Luigi takes a -1 Penalty to Hazard Checks as he races downhill!

1st      2nd      3rd      4th      5th     6th
Movement Phase

Crank enjoys a comfortable lead, and as his fellow racers struggle he seeks to widen it! He hits the Dash Panel for ONE Momentum, [6]-1 and absolutely BLAZES ahead, tearing straight through the ORANGE loop! He loses FOUR MOMENTUM as he looks ahead to the YELLOW curve- can he hold this lead for 4 more segments?

Zelda hits the Dash Panels for ONE Momentum, but it isn't nearly enough to give her a chance to Pull Ahead!

Captain Falcon, Dry Bones, The Mysterious Mr. L, and Luigi all hit the Dash Panel for ONE Momentum- giving them all One Momentum Total! It's a tight group behind Zelda, one after the other zipping toward the Item Boxes!

Cleanup Phase

Crank aims for an Item Box on his way through RED, [4]+2 readily nabbing one [4] and beginning to drag a GREEN SHELL behind his Kart!

Princess Zelda [5]+2-1 has little trouble hitting an Item Box, [1]+1+1 and receives a TRIPLE BANANA!

Captain Falcon heads for the Item Boxes, [1]+2 but Zelda takes the one he was aiming for!

Dry Bones [2]+2-1 is right on Falcon's bumper, and so loses his shot at an Item Box as well!

The Mysterious Mr. L [3]+2-1 barely snags an Item Box, [5]+4+1 but it's a doozy! He hefts his BLUE SHELL, debating when the best time to use it will be!

Luigi [3]+2-1 hastily swerves to grab an Item Box on the other side of the road, [1]+5+1 and is rewarded with a MUSHROOM!

One 6, and a pair of 5's and 4's? Out of 15 rolls? I think I wore out my d6 today, that's only a 33% success rate and a measly 2.8 average roll.

"Ugh, I must be more roughed up then I realized if my driving is this poor." DB sighed before his eyes lit up in fear as the flashing warning light came on, alerting him to the yellow menace now on the track. Thoughts of the simulator showing him how his kart would handle came crashing back into his mind. Even though the sim showed his tank would look more at home in a destruction derby then on the track, it did reveal the 1 glaring flaw. His wide tracks made it difficult to evade those slippery monsters and a design flaw allowed easy access for those things to get stuck in important places. Damn scientists wouldn't even put some plywood up to cover it trying to convince him to remember the resale value. DEFENSIVE DRIVING.
