Elven Caravan?
« on: April 24, 2012, 02:24:56 am »

A thought just hit me-

If Elves hate killing trees, then what are their caravans made of? After all, I can understand the other wooden items that they try to pawn off on the other races, but it seems a tad misleading to be riding around in a wooden caravan if you're an elf. It would be like Michael Schumacher (an F1 race car driver) driving down the track in a old beat up Honda civic (*a car that was shitty when it was brand new). It just doesn't look right.

Any thoughts on this?

Do they come with caravans? They used to only come with their goods on pack animals: if this has changed it is probably a bug.

*edit*

the don't have [COMMON_DOMESTIC_PULL], so they shouldn't be bringing caravans. Check again: if you can confirm elven caravans you should submit it as a bug report.

Sung wood?

Afaik, they don't ever use wagons.
I think they just **** into tree holes and gather the wood the tree is throwing after them for it for the rest of their goods,
nearly 100% useless anyway (except for exotic animals).

Elves bring caravans, but they do not bring wagons.  All of their trade goods come carried on pack animals.

They don't make wagons because they DONT WANT TO USE THE THE 20+ UNITS OF WOOD THEY CARRY TO MY FORTRESS AND TRADE FOR A SINGLE SILVER EARRING.

I guess they just sit around and wait for trees to fall over and die.

I highlighted your confusion. See, elves hate when YOU kill trees. Elves, themselves, kill trees just fine, as proved by the dozens of logs they bring to you yearly.

It's just that they know the humane (elven?) way to do it, without causing unnecessary suffering for the vegetal.

Hmmm... I never really noticed. Maybe I should pay more attention? Anyway, how do they carry all their stuff? Can you IMAGINE how strong the elves are SUPPOSED to be, if they are carrying all their stuff with their bare hands? I mean... really...

Dwarfmeister, are you from a commonwealth country? In the US, where Toady is from, the word "caravan" is never used for wagons or travel trailers. When you get the announcement "an elven caravan from Falayalaralfali has arrived", it just means "elf merchants traveling together", not "elves pulling a pop-up trailer behind their Austin Allegro".

Isn't the prevailing idea that they just use wood that has naturally fallen?

Or they grow wagons when they need them.

I like the idea that elves are trying to get a monopoly on wood.

I thought it was the elves basically use their hippie skills to magically make the items grow naturally out of the trees, and they fall off when they're ready.

Somehow, that fills me more with dread than anticipation.  It's like being told that someone's exhuming your favorite grandparent and they're going to try to make her into a cyborg stripper.
