I assumed they where just selfish bastards who wanted a monopoly on wood.
They don't like trees, they simply don't want you chopping them down!

We just need to get Toady to embed a Lisp interpreter into DF.  Learning lambda calculus in order to play the game wouldn't make DF's learning curve much steeper.

I allways assumed it was the whole sung out of tree thing. If it is a monopoly, I still don't mind, so long as they arn't dicks about it. On the other hand, if they go DeBeers on me....

I had an above ground garden built in the grounds of my castle and two young dwarves spent time socialising there over the summer and at the end of the summer they were in love. Remember those long summers of your childhood? That first kiss in the gardens while crossbows dwarves shoot goblins above your head? The rain of dead birds as the hunters get to work? Truly Spearhills is a paradise.

Dwarfmeister, are you from a commonwealth country? In the US, where Toady is from, the word "caravan" is never used for wagons or travel trailers. When you get the announcement "an elven caravan from Falayalaralfali has arrived", it just means "elf merchants traveling together", not "elves pulling a pop-up trailer behind their Austin Allegro".

Yes. It's called "California". It's nice to know that I'm not a U.S. citizen...

A thought just hit me-

If Elves hate killing trees, then what are their caravans made of?
I highlighted your confusion. See, elves hate when YOU kill trees. Elves, themselves, kill trees just fine, as proved by the dozens of logs they bring to you yearly.

It's just that they know the humane (elven?) way to do it, without causing unnecessary suffering for the vegetal.

Eating sentients is fine... but don't you dare chop down an uncaring pile of cellulose.

I'd like to think about it as they just are uncultured goblins, and use the chopping of trees as a pretense to enact war on other civilizations.  At least true goblins have the decency to not pretend to be decent people before eating you.

No.

Eating your fallen enemy is acceptable.  Eating sentients otherwise is abhorrent.

Sadly, I think the poster of this "sig worthy" comment forgot that people from the United States also tend to have MULTIPLE MEANINGS to the same word. And in case you forgot, there is an AMERICAN car called the Dodge Grand CARAVAN, which, obviously, uses the word CARAVAN the same way that I have. All I'm saying is that, to whoever posted that "sig worthy" comment, if you were TRYING to come across as arrogant, you have succeeded.   Not all Americans are the same. Remember that, okay?

I'm still keeping it in my sig anyway, because my dad had an Austin Allegro.

I'm American. I was not trying to be dismissive of you, just making a joke based on different uses of the word. If you do a google search for the phrase "in a caravan" essentially all the results will be from Britain.

I was just offended that you viewed me as an outsider, instead of a fellow American. Other than that, you're joke was funny. It sounds like something my old man would probably say.

Not hypocrites, liars. The reason they're going to war with you is that they're infringing on your wood monopoly! Its the theory that makes the most sense while requiring the least craziness.

Afaik, they don't ever use wagons.
I think they just **** into tree holes and gather the wood the tree is throwing after them for it for the rest of their goods,
nearly 100% useless anyway (except for exotic animals).

Edit. Oh Jesus Christ, Necro would be proud. The second horse in the caravan came in and immediately caught on fire. I looked into his inventory and found a burning pig tail fiber bag. Curious, I looked inside.
