Oh, just fine. New assignment, moving over to Hephaestus for some time, hence not on the mission. He smiles and wiggles his fingers in the air. Spooky science! Secrets of universe and beyond!

Just my thing, you know. Well, besides saving lives of unlucky teammates, but hey, can't have a cake and eat it too.
Dr. Sanctor chuckled.

How have you been doing, Bartholomew? Oh, and - my, I don't think we've been properly introduced to each other yet, right? My name is Dr. Maurice Sanctor, a surgeon in service of the ARM. Sentenced to the  HMR Corps for treating the wrong person at the wrong time, as if not everyone deserves at least a chance to live. Maurice smiled with a hint of sadness in his eyes.

Ulrich Leland. Location: Briefing room

"Ah, Mr. Markov, great to see you are still alive! Is this mutual support foundation continuation of what we discussed some time ago? May I call you Bark?"

The process of awakening from stasis has always been a sickening experience for Xan - the sudden shift from utter stillness of mind to even the slow creep of feelings at the back of his mind is disorientating and gives him a headache. He reaches groggily for his head, cradling it in his hands against the pain-
And he freezes. He opens his eyes to see his hands.
His hands.
He went to sleep without limbs, he should not have woken up with hands.
He quickly concentrated. He willed his limbs to shift to something else. Something more ... serpentine. With scales. But there was no change forthcoming.
Xan frowned. He concentrated again on his limbs. Change. Change! CHANGE! But nothing was forthcoming but the strange phantom ache that results from concentrating too hard.
His hands are trembling, and his thin chest is heaving with panicked breaths.
I can't change. Why can't I change?!
He rolls off the table he woke up lying on and scrambles under it, frantically glancing around at the room he finds himself in. White walled. Sterile. Harsh lighting. Infirmary.
He stays under the table for quite some time, processing his existential crisis and shaking. Eventually he stops, and slowly crawls out from under the table, unfolding to his full height. His eyes are red-rimmed and his face is streaked with tears. He speaks with a shaky voice.
Steve. Steve, am I on the Sword? Why can't I change? What has happened? Why can I not change?
((I know we're saving this until the missions start or however this is going, I'm just making sure I don't lose track of the post.))

To Maurice:"Weren't...Ahem, yea... I'm Bartholomew Markov. I'm new here. I was sentenced because I... I... kind of, lost it....."
His hands start trembling, his pupils widening.
To Ulrich:"Y-yes, at least p-partialy... Bark? I was called like that baack hoome......."

"And you didn't get defensive and snappy when you were sober. I know what a man with troubles looks like, old man. Used to see one every day in the mirror. The synthflesh goes a longway to hiding it though. It's my job to take care of idiots these days, but I'll do you in spare time, for old time's sake. So, out with it."
Upon reaching the Rec room and locating Flint, I walk over in front of him and sit down, turning my head to look at the VR stations, but actually watching Flint from the corners of my eyes.
"Ah, and here I thought you were my court mandated therapy session." Flint said sarcastically
"But it turns out I look pathetic enough to warrant your pity. I don't know if I should be flattered or insulted."
He shook his head a bit.
"Sorry man. Just a bit cranky. Can't sleep. Head hurts. Ship has no decent synthcofee."
He looked up, raising one hand to shield his eyes from the light, trying to look at the source of the voice.
"Look man, it's this whole thing. This situation. I'm fine with me being hurt or- But I can't-"
He failed to spot it, his face showing confusion.
"Bwuh? How much did I drink?"
Guilt caused hallucinations? I thought people were supposed to be visited by the spirits of the dead, not the living. Am I going crazy?
His eyes fell to Lyra instead.
How long was she sitting there? Does she think I'm going crazy?
Maybe she's doing it, trying to drive me crazy? Nah, probably not.
For all I know Mesk put something in my drink again.

"Uh... hi there. You're the girl from the VR, right? Sorry I had to cut things short last time. Duty calls and all that. Was fun though. Thanks." Flint added, trying to smile, hoping she hadn't heard him talking to himself.

Pleasure to meet you, Bartholomew. Do not worry; many people here have lost it, either before or during their service here - yet the majority find it anew, and that is a miracle of this place. People are reborn here, in the steel crucible of purpose, vast technology and alien eldritchness. I am sure you will be fine. Maurice smiled with understanding and put a hand over Bartholomew's, holding it with tight reassuring presence.
"...and I persisted in the faith that the time of cruel miracles was not past."

He closes his eyes and starts breathing deeply.

I look directly at Flint, then back at the VR, then back at Flint, then back to the VR.

((Miya is General Miyamoto, correct?))

If so:

Quote from: Ian Smith to General Miyamoto
Hello general, I would like to test a prototype for the mission, if possible. I noticed a MCP-II suit with the fleshknitter tank listed. I currently have no tokens, but understand that I will have to pay you back if it is destroyed during the upcoming mission, and would do so with the tokens I recieve in this and further missions. The main reason that I wish to test it is because this is my first mission, and I do not think my MKI suit will protect me against those dreaded plant-fungi alien things. I also asked Steve, in case you are busy.

((I already asked in OOC, but hadn't realized that I also had to ask IC, and just noticed.))

Edit:

"Hello, Steve? It is my first mission, and I was wondering if you could approve a prototype for my usage... I noticed a MCP-II suit with a fleshknitter tank listed, and that is what I would like to use if possible. I already messaged General Miyamoto about having it approved."

Ask Steve.

((Yep, Miya's the general. Actually I think if you get your prototype approved by Steve, you get it for free. Though that's a once-per-lifetime thing.))

Nodding to Lyra, Maurice left for the brief visit to the briefing room, and then went to the airlock once again.
Open the ROMANTIC BEGGAR case. Inspect the contents.

I put your recommendations on the list. That fleshknitter, is that still experimental? If so, we might get a few cans as prototypes to test, no? Maybe you could look into that?

And that knife... I'm not sure. It sounds interesting, but highly dangerous and with a lot of potential to go wrong. Last thing we need is the only medic on a a team to go on a rampage with a magic knife. And either way, I'll have to check with Steve what we can use to find a trail to the nerve nodes, and if that turns out to be 'underground' it might have a use.

@heroguy111: Welcome! To get right to business, do you want to join next mission? If yes, say so clearly now, but know it's gonna be a difficult one. Like, really difficult. And that we're with a ton of people already. Still, newbs/players with no missions get preference.

"Noted."

((IS anyone keeping track of these? If not, would it be possible for the people who requested a prototype to get that on the fund page of the wiki, for easier tracking later?))

Already did that, General. That is why I put it on my prototype request list I sent to Simulacrus.

I agree that the knife is highly dangerous, but I thought you would prefer to have that option on the list. As for the person to use it, I have no common experience with either of the team medics; however, as I checked the mission team profiles and I could suggest Ryan Jorgensen for the task: as a professional Exotic weaponry specialist, he has a honed mind on par with his skill. However, I would also recommend checking up with Steve whether cutting the Haebi "ground" is a work for a surgeon or a swordsman; if the latter, I can recommend giving that task to the Mummy King Tek, given his comparably strong willpower and skill with Unconventional weaponry.

Very good, let's hope we won't need to use it.

It's true that simply having the option is good, still no obligation to use it. That knife, does it work its influence at a distance, or only when you hold it directly? dies it work through suits and such? Oh, and while I don't particularly like pawning off work, if you could check with Steve which of those two it'll be more like, that'd help, so I can focus a bit more on actually getting these prototypes into the hands of those that need them. Only if you're not too busy with preparing for Hep, of course.
