((You only get a definate bonus to a roll if you have a bit of equipment that gives this bonus (like wearing an exoskeleton), a status effect that does the same (like watching that video about how to modify suits gives +1 to handiwork rolls involving suits), the proper amount of skill points (I forget how many to get a definate bonus, but you must have at least 1 point in a skill to not get a -1 to it) or the proper amount of stat points (5 points to get a 1/3 of a chance of a bonus, 10 points to get 2/3 and 15 to get a permenant bonus. Getting killed in certain ways and being brought back to life on the ship sometimes reduces stat points, unless you get a certain gene therapy). There are doutlessly other ways that are brought on by chance or situations, but these are the ones I know about for sure.))

Bishop frowned behind his fists.

"Sorry 'friend' but I don't think either of us trusts you enough to stick to your word. Now put it down or else."

Counter circle him!

((This encounter has taught me a valuable lesson: We need a cute black girl character.

....

What? Stop looking at me like that.))

Tucks it safely into its padded bag and swings it over my shoulder wincing slightly at the movement

Good enough? Losing it entirely is pointless ill be no use to the team without my tablet to access machines we come across on missions and ill need it to keep schematics if i make any changes to a piece of equipment.

(( Thanks :) and lol how did you get cute black girl from this? ))

((The thing about cute characters in the HMRC is that they either lose their cuteness very quickly (due to a mixture of disfigurement, mind rape, general horror and the odd bits of verbal abuse) or retain it due to a mixture of massive amounts of insanity and some additional madness to go with it. The average HMRC convict, you see, comes in three flavors - reasonable (even if humorously incompetent), ruthless and bat guano. If a convict doesn't fit any of these, they obviously haven't been around very long.))

((Good luck finding much to interface with on a mission, or, at least, much to interface with that's actually important (Wristpads are all you'd really need for that, even though the only mission where we've been working with human technology that we'd actually care about interfacing with (Mission 3, I think), was not wireless and even if it were, your dinky little tablet ain't doing anything to it.)). And schematics are saved automatically if you use the much more efficient VR machines, and again, our wristpads can store stuff like that.))

((Now that I think about it, it is somewhat doubtful that unfathomable creatures from the far beyond would be kind enough to ensure the compatibility of alien computational devices and weapons systems with puny hyoo-man technology. That's the point of giving them to the R&D department, after all. Although there is a chance that the next mission, much like missions 2, 3, 4 and 5 might feature prominent human or human-like elements. So it's not like the datapad will definitely be useless - it's just that its use will be highly situational and its effect quite marginal in many cases.
In short, unless the next mission is an Idiots versus Environment (see missions 1, 3, 6) mission (rather than Idiots versus Hostiles, see missions 2, 4, 5) in an explicitly human-made environment (of which only mission 3 qualifies), you're not going to get to use the datapad a whole lot.))

(( Meh i still want it with me security systems like camera's and automated defenses even of alien design will all still likely run off of a wireless system and ive got 1-2 programs to make yet that could be of use.
Also the tablet is more powerful meaning a longer scanning range and beyond that i just want the tablet so i can attempt to connect to alien tech.
It may well not work but hey thats what intuition is for you never know if you might just get lucky and make it work :) and if there is a human environment then i can make use of it and i like the tablet to because i can keep it with me rather then having to go to a machine to access the files.
One program im intending to design if i keep the tablet is a VI system that i can set to work on translating and analyzing any alien or human tech and data i come across.
Also im already disfigured my character began with a full length burn covering half hes face and now im gonna have a nice scar on my stomach to go with it.

Well alteast the fight should be over now and im still in 1 piece ... mostly since everybody's moves revolved around if the others continued both of theres only if i didnt stop with the tablet and ive now done that and put it away so the fight should end.))

((The VI (AI?) system sounds like a really fun idea. Actually, one of my own potential character concepts was an Auxiliary Systems specialist who'd make a robot companion for himself, onboard AI and everything. The idea was - start with an expert system of some kind, then keep adding stuff to it until limited sentience is achieved. If my character concept would ever come to exist, then I would potentially have my very own sentient robot buddy... that would likely rebel against me, causing untold damage with the dangerous weaponry it would undoubtedly be equipped with.
About alien tech - aliens usually tend toward mystifying, non-traditional designs, autonomous deathtraps and fleshwarping, at least the ones we're likely to encounter.
Oh, and you might want to disable that jammer signal. Sure, Steve will shock you, but he'll probably pull something much nastier on you otherwise. You should trust Friend Steve. He may be petty or uncaring, but rarely does he become actively malevolent or cruel.))

Bishop looked over to Jim and back again.

"Look, all we are concerned about is the programs you have on that thing. Give them to me and we'll let you go right now. You can keep the pad, you can probably just get another one without a problem if we break that one, just give me the codes and you can walk away with your guts still inside you."

((Thinking that your dinky datapad will work with alien tech is... misguided.

Who says that aliens will use Wi-Fi? Who says that they'll have connectors? We do not have plug 'n play technology here.

((That would likely rebel against me, causing untold damage with the dangerous weaponry it would undoubtedly be equipped with.))

Thus, Asimov's three laws of robotics. Modify to suit you.))

(( I wont know until i try it and find out now will i. ))

Looks troubled
There's only 1 program on there and its important especially if we end up in a human environment.
Ive disabled it now so how about we leave it at that and ill swear on my life Looks nervously towards Jims sword that i will not use it again while on board the ship without permission from Steve to test it first?

"Waiting for something that will never happen is not going to convince us. If it's important, you can just make it up again on the spot or bypass the problem entirely. Now, for the last time: Give. Me. The. Codes."

Looks confused
Codes is confusing me there are no codes.
There is a jamming program and list of the wireless systems in the area and to date that is all.
So what codes do you mean and i am not stalling the word codes does not fit what ive got on the tablet.

((Three-Laws-compliant robots would be possible, probably, but those would be impractical for murdering humans (as the HMRC is wont to do), requiring all kinds of exceptions. You might get a situation where, for instance, you roll a 6 in Aux, doing god-knows-what to your programs. Then there's outside interference and such. Besides, I would probably lack the necessary skill to hard-code the laws into the robot, meaning they'd have to remain on a software level. And all sorts of things could happen even if I did manage to do it - that's one of the things you learn from Asimov's stories. Best to keep things uncomplicated and let the robots remain on a potentially-murderous and fun level. And if the robot was actually sentient, it would be likely to understand that going on a killing spree is the surest path to abandonment or the scrap heap. Instead it can plot my demise insidiously and cleverly, which wouldn't be so terrible, you know.))

(( This is interesting once ive got the VI designed i may have to grab you and look into this we could always take a combat bot and just program the VI with advanced tactics and the ability to adjust to whats going on around it on its own.
Not quite sentient but still much more effective then standard bot. ))
