Megaproject: Fondled Mine
« on: April 23, 2012, 04:37:22 am »

Hello Everyone! I give you Fondled Mine, settled in 250 by The Humble Barricade of Animals, citizens of The Orginized Earth. I started this fort to test a megaproject mod I have been working on and it turned into this, and yes those names are random. I didn't even notice the name until like year two of the fort.

I'm running at 50 fps with 500 dwarves, about 50 animals, and a 2x2 embark.

A few stonesense shots, the water you see is coming from my mist generators I placed in the dining halls, the water just drains off the map.

its 34.07. The fps is so good because I cut out a bunch of pretty much worthless junk from vanilla. The last time I did a megaproject this size I was at about 10 fps with this many dwarves.

So I assume you can't get trees to grow on your roof gardens? Or have you been clear-cutting?

I think it's very cool, but I wish there were some trees in those screenshots.

What did you mod out? maybe I'll do it too for my next world. I can just run at 40 fps with 130 dwarfs

That's beautiful.  Did you carve those out of the stone or construct them with an army of masons?  Do the different buildings serve different functions?  Can we see the layout inside them?

If you've fondled mine then I'll fondle yours.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

This is epic, how long in real time did it take you to construct this? The main barrier for me getting into DF at the moment is the sheer time it takes to get a decent fortress up and running.

Those screenshots look great.  What method did you use to grow grass on everything?  Copius pump stacks?

Absolutely gorgeous in the new Overseer screenshot. I'd personally like to see more perspectives using that visualizer, as opposed to Stonesense.

I'm also curious as to the mods you're using (cutting out certain vanilla elements, as you described), as well as how you produced the roof gardens.

Finished: Weatherwires, the Last Mountainhome. A tragic mix of Children of Men, City of Ember, and, uh, magma.
Stymied: Correspondence from Syrupurns, a prematurely ended narrative, told through annual updates.
In Progress: Roomcarnage, a fortress clinging to life beneath a haunted glacier.

I'm most curious about how you got grass everywhere.

I'm most curious about how you got grass everywhere.

I recall in Weatherwires grass briefly began growing randomly underground with no cause, and above-ground grass as well. Not the cave variety.

I mean, that fort was bugged to HFS and back, but perhaps with enough jimmying you could get muddy soil and then hope grass grows naturally up there.

Did he just dig what we see into the soil layer, preserving the original grass?
