(3.5) The Arena: Dragon's Lair

Arena : Dragon's Lair

You're dead, you already know that. Depending on your alignment, you might have expected to go to some (un)pleasant afterlife, but... something is different than you expected.

The room you stand in is shadowy, and you can't see any exits. It looks almost like an office; big desk at one end of the room, bookcases line the wall behind it, and the other walls bear shelves covered in miscellaneous trinkets. Under each item you can see a label, barely legible in the half-light. You lean over and read one of them beneath a quietly humming, rune-encrusted object: Light of Ijesean: Retrieved from the Imperial Palace, circa 374sc. It hits you then; the objects are trophies. Spoils of jobs performed. A voice interrupts your thoughts.

"Not quite the afterlife you were expecting, is it?"

A figure stands up from the chair behind the desk. You could have sworn it wasn't there a moment ago...

"You see, I think you've got potential and we've got some... events going on. Most of the gods want the games to be bloody spectaculars, but shows of skill and cunning are worth bonus points of divine favor."

You have, quite frankly, not the foggiest idea of what he's talking about. The being walks over next to you and scans the ranks of objects.

"Then again, I'm sure you haven't heard of what's going on. Apparently some orc deity got the idea in his head to build an arena for our entertainment, and next thing you know we've got a whole new demiplane and everything. Divinities are lining up to see the proceedings, and I'm not about to let that opportunity go by without a bit of nice, old-fashioned capitalism. And that is where you come in."

It turns to you, and under it's hood you can see the glint of two eyes.

"You'll be competing in a little something I've cooked up, along with a few other candidates. The deal is this: you fight for the entertainment of divine beings, and, in exchange, you can win great prizes, including the greatest prize of all for mortals: another chance at life. Are you in?"

Rules of the game:
Character creation is set to level 5, 32 point build. Or you can bring in a character from another game, as long as they fit into tier 8 (info on tiers is in the main arena thread).
Non-core and homebrewed things approved on a case-by-case basis.
Psionics are allowed, though I wouldn't recommend them in this case.
1 flaw allowed.

Your character will be thrown into an arena full of twists, turns, traps, and a dragon. Your goal is to survive by hiding from the dragon, setting and disabling traps, and killing the other players. The game will be play-by-post, and character-specific information (position, setting traps, where the character thinks the dragon is) will be handled by private messages.

Tier eight? Isn't that, like, commoner level?

Oops. Confused the class tiers with Arena tiers...

Also, I'll try my hand at my first D&D game.

Ah, nevermind then. PBP is a tad slow for me.

I can haz alternate class feature?

Immediate Magic
Trade familiar for ability. Useable up to Int mod/day. Specialist wizards only.
Conjuration - Teleport self only 10' as an immediate action.

I can haz featz?
Arcane Thesis
Easy Metamagic
Fell Drain[metamagic]

Wondering if I can do anything with fell drained magic missiles and stuff.

Conjuration - Teleport self only 10' as an immediate action.
That... is a bit overpowered. Despite the 10 ft limit, that would let you telepork out of the attack range of most creatures, and you can use it even if it isn't your turn. Sorry.

Arcane Thesis
Easy Metamagic
Fell Drain[metamagic]
Arcane thesis is okay. I don't know what the other two feats do, though; what book are they from?

Actually, I've decided against using Conjuration, because (a) my planned character can't be a conjurer and still be effective (b) I don't like Conjuration.

Arcane Thesis has the following effects:
Choose one spell. That spell is now cast at +2 Caster Level, and metamagic costs placed on that spell are reduced by 1 level, to a minimum of +0.

Easy Metamagic (*Metamagic)
Choose one metamagic feat. That metamagic now costs 1 less to apply than before, to a minimum of 1.

Fell Drain
When a living creature is damaged by a spell with Fell Drain applied on it, it is drained of 1 level. This negative level disappears [Caster's level] hours later without a fortitude save.

I can haz prestige class?
Force Missile Mage (10 lvl, on the Giantitp forums)

I can haz race?
Stronghearted Halflings - Same as Halfling, but trade +1 to all saves for one bonus feat.

Also, could I be a level 6 character with 0 LA adjustment? That still probably is within Tier 8, no?

Easy Metamagic: Approved!
Fell Drain: Approved!
FM Mage: Approved!
Stronghearted Halflings: Approved!

Sure, why not? I'm curious about whatever it is you're planning, now. Are you recreating Anya from your own campaign? :P

Nope. Anya's a high-level character that really only starts working at about 9~12 level minimum.

I'm kinda planning a character that uses Fell Drain and Magic Missile to deliver annoying Magic Missiles that also deal an extra 5 damage (negative level) and drains saves.

Eventually if I ever get Enervation I'm taking another Arcane Thesis and Empowered Fell Drain Enervate the living daylights out of everyone. I'm not sure if that exactly works, though, but meh xD

Welp, if nobody else shows interest in this game, I'm going to drop it and try a different type of challenge. A session like this can't really be run with a single PC.

o_O

Well, if no-one else joins, I'd like to rejoin whatever challenge you have with Nieve the succubus with 34 charisma. Sadly she's a low-tier-7.

I'd be willing to join if it's play-by-post like the other one. I'm getting confused with which ones are PBP, IRC, or MapTools. There are too many games called The Arena. I'll make a sheet later tonight.

There are too many games called The Arena.
That's because they're all related. That main thread has links to the sub-threads, as well as a bit about each game being run.

And yes, it's play by post.
