Prologue: EscapeFalri awoke, and all was light.
Blinding, searing light. Light of the heavens. Lights of the gods. First white, then a prism of colors, resting finally a soft golden hue. This light was all Falri knew - for just a moment, she believed she
was the light.
A voice spoke, calm and with an echo: "Welcome to life, shard thirty thousand five hundred forty seven."
Bang. Falri hit something, and all at once she knew both pain and feeling. The light was gone, and all was cold and dark. Musty, even. She was moving backwards against her will. The sounds of grinding and screaming could be heard in the distance.
She struggled to move herself without success. Another voice, softer and sympathetic, spoke from behind her: "You don't know where you are, do you?"
"...Where I am?" Falri surprised herself by speaking.
"The machine. In just a few moments, you will be extracted." The voice cracks. "I feel bad. You weren't born with this knowledge. A defect, maybe?"
"Defect?" Falri knew little, but could sense something bad coming.
"Listen. My life will be gone in less than a minute, but I may be able to spend it helping you." The voice hastened as if time was running out. "You'll have to do exactly as I say, though."
"What shall I do?"
The sounds of grinding and screaming became much louder, and Falri could make out a blurry image of a grey place with many moving parts.
"When I say 'go', I need you to imagine yourself flying. No,
command yourself to fly. Your life depends on it. Are you ready?"
