The Legend of Zelda
The Chronospace Shards

(OP image pending)

Introduction

LoZ: The Chronospace Shards is my first attempt at running a serious game with an actual tabletop system. I have always wanted to run a Zelda game, and despite how much some hate the system, I have a fondness for 4E D&D. I also want a break from obligations to illustrate my games for a while, even though this will undoubtedly include illustrations at some points. I decided that the best idea was to combine these three desires into a play-by-post D&D 4E version of Legend of Zelda.

Character-building and format

Similar to the main Legend of Zelda games, we will not be controlling more than one character nor will we be "building" him in the traditional race and class sense. Our viewpoint character is yet another incarnation of Link.

If there's only one character and we're not building him, how are we going to interact with the game? That's a good question. You see, you the players will dictate Link's every move. Popular suggestions are more likely to be enacted, and I'll be fine with a few flat-out nonsensical ones here and there.

The rest of the game will be relatively similar to D&D 4E. There will be combat, skill encounters and socializing with other characters. To stay true to the Zelda games and to build my puzzle-crafting skills, there will be a wide variety of puzzles to conquer.

Socializing?

Just as with Luigi in Luigi Quest, Link can converse with others via interpretive dance routines.

So what's the plot?

The plot must be discovered! Part of it will appear in the first game post.

When will this be starting?

Whenever I feel ready to start it.

Prologue: Escape

Falri awoke, and all was light.

Blinding, searing light. Light of the heavens. Lights of the gods. First white, then a prism of colors, resting finally a soft golden hue. This light was all Falri knew - for just a moment, she believed she was the light.

A voice spoke, calm and with an echo: "Welcome to life, shard thirty thousand five hundred forty seven."

Bang. Falri hit something, and all at once she knew both pain and feeling. The light was gone, and all was cold and dark. Musty, even. She was moving backwards against her will. The sounds of grinding and screaming could be heard in the distance.

She struggled to move herself without success. Another voice, softer and sympathetic, spoke from behind her: "You don't know where you are, do you?"

"...Where I am?" Falri surprised herself by speaking.

"The machine. In just a few moments, you will be extracted." The voice cracks. "I feel bad. You weren't born with this knowledge. A defect, maybe?"

"Defect?" Falri knew little, but could sense something bad coming.

"Listen. My life will be gone in less than a minute, but I may be able to spend it helping you." The voice hastened as if time was running out. "You'll have to do exactly as I say, though."

"What shall I do?"

The sounds of grinding and screaming became much louder, and Falri could make out a blurry image of a grey place with many moving parts.

"When I say 'go', I need you to imagine yourself flying. No, command yourself to fly. Your life depends on it. Are you ready?"

>Nod and be ready for the signal

Nod? Falri tried to move her head, but it was indistinguishable from her body. She awaited the signal anyway.

"Goodbye, friend. You will have very little time to escape the factory. One... two... three..."

GO!

Falri shattered. Or did she? She felt new, real, free. She knew she could fly, so she did. There was very little time to enjoy her second awakening as a blaring sound filled the air around her. Footsteps clattered about below her location. She could now make out her surroundings clearly.

She did not know what a factory was, but if she did she would know she was in one. Red lights blazed from the ceiling. None of the clattering workers below had noticed her yet. The crystalline friend who had promised to help her before was stuck in some kind of mechanism at the end of a conveyor belt, apparently jamming it.

She could see a sign above an opening to the south: "MAIN EXIT". To the east and west, more conveyors slowed to a halt. The screaming and grinding sounds were replaced by cries of confusion.

This is what happens when we randomly murder people.

You get attacked by a Yandere triangle monster.

>See if we can help out friend.

Falri flew over to the shard-like friend and tries to pull him or her out. <Athletics check> It's no good. Falri didn't have the strength to force her friend out.

"What are you doing!?" The friend yelled at his would-be rescuer. "Even if you pushed me out the machine would close on you! Go!"

Falri flew back out of the jaws of the machine just in time to watch it crush her crystalline friend to death. The sirens in the factory continued to blare, but a couple of the conveyor belts began moving again.

The first voice from before boomed out from the ceiling: "Emergency situation resolved. All overfill personnel, please exit the extraction room and seal the doorway. Thank you for your cooperation with DINTECH."

>Fly to yon exit.

Falri saw the clattering workers clearly as they begin leaving the room. They looked short, have white protrusions and stand completely straight. Their language formed a chorus of grunts and growls.

She headed for the exit door as fast as she could fly, bumping into the unaware workers a few times. In just a moment she was through the door and in a long hallway extending north and south. Workers bustled everywhere underneath her, and the red light was dimmer in the hallway than in the room before. Screens displaying constantly changing information adorned the walls.

>Read it! Read it all!

<Arcana check> Falri gazed into one of the terminals. She found herself miraculously understanding every word displayed. Language gained: Moblin! The terminal scrolled between three messages:

"UPHOLD ALL WORK CODES AT ALL TIMES."

"DO NOT EXIT THE FACILITY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES."

"IN CASE OF INVASION: SLIDE FINGER ACROSS TOP OF TERMINAL FIVE TIMES."

>Head north.

Falri attempted to head north, but the north exit was sealed. Every half a minute or so, a single worker would come through the exit causing it to slide open for a few seconds. She could try to fly through during that period, perhaps.
