Saving Those Combat Logs
« on: April 21, 2012, 03:48:54 pm »

Anyone else save the combat logs of particularly interesting fights? Maybe you and your warband were ambushed by lizardfolks in the middle of the jungle? Perhaps you had a massive dual with a legendary creature? I enjoy saving my combat logs, giving them titles (Battle of ...etc), maybe including some flavour text (the date and weather conditions as well as terrain time), just for a good read when I'm bored. I suppose this could be done with Fortress mode as well, but it would be too littered with "Urist McDwarf cancelled job, interrupted by goblin shaman!"

How to do?

In your Dwarf Fortress folder there's a Gamelog.txt which records every piece of information that pops up in combat and other text things like "You hear a howl" or "The maceman burps", stuff like that. Its a good idea to clean it out every once in a while too, because it gets cluttered with tons of crap quickly after a bunch of battles.

I was wondering about that - does gamelog.txt ever get truncated or cleared? I'm OK with letting it grow, it's kinda neat to vgrep back to the beginning & see what I was doing at start.

I'll want to save it if there's an inbuilt rollover of some sort.

I don't think losing guts actually kills you, you just throw up and pass out and bleed to death.
This was supposed to be a cool upgrade. All I got was more hostile zombies.

I've never seen it wipe itself, so I assume it will just keep growing and growing.

Which mod is that? It has my vocalizations of humans and my "halberdier" as a unit type, but it has muskets, so it's not Genesis :).

Its my personal hand-modded version of Genesis. I took your mod, added in muskets from a musket mod, removed demons (didn't like them), then added in a whole bunch of my own armour and weapons (a realistic armour system with pauldrons, cuirass, bevor, sallet helms, knight helms, loaf helms, greaves, upper and lower cannons, vambraces, etc. Basically you can walk around in fieldplate with all the actual parts on). Then further refined certain races (added more japanese weapons and parts to piece together feudal samurai armour for the orcs, gave the sylvan elves roman armour and weapons, made the dusk elves like medieval germany, added in persian armour and weapons for the dunedwellers).

So I opened my gamelog.txt

Code: [Select]
You drop the organic cheapmetal corseque.
You have discovered a river.
It is noon.
You cannot travel through the camp.
You drink the water [3].
You eat the striped bass, [5].
The Wizard Swordsmage points!
You feel your tongue swell!
You drop the yak leather backpack.
You drop the red panda leather waterskin.
"You have come to the wrong place to fight, for I have more power than anything in the universe! You can't beat me!"
You have transformed into a super saiyan!
You feel extremely ill!
You feel incredibly sick!
You vomit.
The Wizard Swordsmage shoots out thick strands of webbing!
The Wizard Swordsmage points!
You feel your face itch!
You retch.

I remember that. Being a super saiyan, it took me about 5 minutes, real time, at ~1000 FPS to die from that constant wizardy onslaught. Good times. My second favorite is from the arena:

Code: [Select]
Dersite 1 whispers an unholy terror!
Troll 19 has become enraged!
Troll 20 has become enraged!
The Troll 8 is caught in a burst of psychic energy!
Troll 8 is caught in a cloud of psychic energy!
The Troll 9 is caught in a burst of psychic energy!
Troll 2 has bled to death.
Troll 9 breathes a cloud of psychic energy!
The Troll 9 is caught in a burst of psychic energy!
Troll 3 charges at Dersite 1!
Troll 3 punches Dersite 1 in the left shin with his left hand, fracturing the carapace!
Troll 3 collides with Dersite 1!
Dersite 1 is knocked over and tumbles backward!
Troll 1 has bled to death.
Troll 24 has bled to death.
Troll 27 has bled to death.
Troll 25 has bled to death.
Troll 23 has bled to death.
Troll 22 has bled to death.
Troll 21 has bled to death.
Troll 18 has bled to death.
Troll 16 has bled to death.
Troll 14 has bled to death.
Troll 12 has bled to death.
Troll 11 has bled to death.
Troll 10 has bled to death.
Troll 9 has bled to death.
Troll 8 has bled to death.
Troll 7 has bled to death.
Troll 4 has bled to death.
Troll 3 has bled to death.
Troll 20 has bled to death.
Troll 19 has bled to death.
Troll 17 has bled to death.
Troll 5 has bled to death.
Troll 15 has bled to death.
Troll 26 has bled to death.
Troll 13 has bled to death.
Troll 6 has bled to death.

Mmmm... What mod adds in wizards and other spellcasters?

Another from me: Only part of it because character limit.

Only one I've saved:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I was an one-handed archer for a few moments before my ultimate death, it was an amusing moment of WTF. Found out later that it's a known bug.

I don't think losing limbs to alligators is really a bug. I know I've had it happen a lot.

No, but using a bow one-handed kinda is. Well... thinking of it now, maybe I held the arrow and pulled the string with my teeth.
