Winter

Bungekmanthul is full of traitors and dwarves of weak will. Many here lack the dedication to duty and craft that is a fundemental requirement of our way of life.

The greatest pleasure known to a dwarf is that of productive labour, so our soldiers should be pleased to have enemies that can be faced in simple combat.

Their weapons are of our best iron, forged by my own hands. They hold metal blades capable of cleaving any substance of merely organic origin. Claiming to be trapped in webs is purest nonsense and sign of laziness.

I am told that the initial charge crippled the beast, almost killing it. but then the military idled in the sunlight and webs for many days, doing nothing, refusing to kill the monster.

Eventually the beast stirred from its crippled state, moving far enough to disturb the feeble sky-gazing slackness of the soldiers, and they finally performed their duty, slaying their enemy as they should have done from the beginning.

They returned to the barracks in a shameful state, their armour soiled with mud and surface filth, and yet they claim to be disgusted by the air of the barracks hall.

I have personally attended to the care of axedwarf Lorbam, producing a bronze crutch to replace the missing limb, yet the military are ungrateful.

There is rebellion within the ranks. I fear that strict measures may become necessary.

Spring

The great project of Bungekmanthul is falling apart. Somehow, we are failing. Can it be that our craft is insufficient? No, this cannot be. Our adherence to tradition is failing us? No, this too is impossible. There is only one aspect of dwarven life that we lack, and now we suffer for it.

The child Cog has had barely a week as an adult before being struck down in a brawl. The population of the fort is in such a state of lawlessness that the death was not reported for a further week; the corpse left to rot in the hall as dwarves ate in the booths.

It is clear what action is needed here. The missing element of the ideal dwarven life is the rule of law.

None step forward to identify the murderer. I find this greatly suspicious for a murder committed in a crowded meeting hall. An example must be made, nonetheless.

The source of this rebellious spirit has always been, and continues to be, the military. Their commander has authority over them, and must take ultimate responsibility for their actions.

The miscreant will be permitted to wear armour during this punishment. Commander Tosid may survive.

All will know that future crimes will not be punished so leniently.

Summer

The sheriff will soon have a new task. Elvish influence spreads everywhere.

Enjoying this. I wonder how long it will take for the settlement to crumble to its end?

Autumn

Two criminals have been arrested for the offense of demanding timber. Stonecrafter Sigun was a great loss to the fortress, a truly sublime worker of rock. He and his accomplice in crime, a child of one of the axedwarves, both gave no resistance to the sheriff upon being confronted. Each broke down in uncontrollable sobbing, a most fitting display of contrition that may have seen them able to return one day to polite company. This rehabilitation was not to be, for in their grief, they refused all nourishment, and died mere weeks later.

With the deaths of these criminals, the mood of Bungekmanthul has returned to optimism. A dedicated effort to clear clutter from our halls has had a great improving effect on morale, and our engravers are now hard at work decorating our walls.

The traders inform us that our crafts have come to the attention of the weaklings royals of the north.

The royal family of the Shattered Guilds mountainhomes live respectable lives within their own homes, respecting stone and metal, but they tolerate the corruption within their society. Who can trust a monarch who permits elves within their borders, who counts forests among their lands, and who permits carpenters to work openly? We must not become part of this system. Bungekmanthul will remain independent. I am ruler of this mountain! I am no mere baron. I am king!

Winter

"You do realise that we know what the fortress name really translates to, don't you?"

"What? You do?"

"Wel all do. You didn't really think that nobody would spot it, out of all the dwarves we have here?"

"We are The Eternal Workers of Stone, and always have been. It is our identity."

"Yeah, whatever. I only mentioned it because I thought the guy who chose the name 'lizarddeviant' might want to see this."

"Uh..."

"We caught it in the entrance hall. We think it was trying to find somewhere warm. Impressive beast, isn't it?"

"Medtob, this thing is huge! What in Sibrek's name can you possibly want this thing for?"

"What, you don't like it? It's cute! I'm going to find out what it likes to eat."

Late Winter

Praise the miners! Our adherence to the law and the craft has been rewarded with the ultimate prize!

At the very lowest levels of our mining operation, close to the stone-blood of the earth, tangled blue strands have been discovered within the rock. All here know the tales of horrors in the depths associated with the discovery of this miraculous metal. The military has been placed on high alert, and all within the caverns instructed to remain cautious.

It does not take long for our caution to pay off. The civilians are evacuated and soldiers sent in.

These horrors are feeble creatures, easily slain. We must conclude that the soft, scraggle-bearded military of the northern mountainhomes have greatly exaggerated their threat. Elvish cowardice runs deep.

Mining commences at full pace.

Mining out an adamantine block greater than 2x2 squares? I'm sure there'll be no repercussions.

Spring

Mining of adamantine proceeds smoothly, extracting all ore that we discover, greatly lifting the spirits of all within Bungekmanthul. Although only the chief mechanic and smelting crew have worked directly upon the raw metal, by now all have made the trip down into the deep mines to haul ore. All have seen our wealth with their own eyes, felt it within their hands, and know that it is our rightful reward.

The engravers have been holding a competition to design a symbol for our independent civilisation. I cannot agree with their choice, and yet the craftdwarfship is exceptional, and the fort population appears to enjoy it.

The mood among the metalworkers is greatly different, one of unsuppressed excitement.

"Gah! What in the surface hells was that...  oh...  Oh!  Guys, I have a great idea! I know how I can prove I'm worthy to craft the adamantine! Come on, I'll show you"

"What, using bronze? Are you mad?"

"Trust me, this is going to be fantastic. You just watch."

"Ilral... this is just chainmail trousers. You're going to have to do better than that."

Summer

"No Limul, I don't think elves have eight legs."

With the rule of law now solidly established, all discipline problems within the ranks have disappeared. The military has achieved the efficiency that they should have had from the start. They stand as an effective defense against the troubles of the surface world.

All is well.

Late Summer

"Lads! I have it! I know how to build the perfect adamantine weapon! It's so simple! All we need is a few wafers and a bit of wood..."

"Traitorous bastard! Heathen! Betrayer!"
