The best tileset?
« on: April 21, 2012, 02:53:38 am »

Hi guys

I have been really busy over the past few months and haven't gotten to play DF anywhere near as much as I would have liked  :(. Happily I have more time on my hands and this time I thought I would try a tileset instead of using the default ascii (because I don't want to shrug something off without trying it). I basically want all your opinions on whats the best tileset and why. The only thing I'll mention is I prefer squares to rectangles for tiles though I'm not sure if that matters and really, it wouldn't be hard for the pros of a particular tileset to overcome that.

Thanks

I'll throw in a little bit of shameless self promotion and say my own, because it tries for a minimalist aesthetic inspired by Tocky, without any little graphical errors like statues masquerading as jellyfish, or obvious walls doubling as rivers. I'm testing a new version in preparation for the next DF version, so when I'm content it's free of little bugs and that I'm satisfied with each tile I'll probably throw it up on the forum.

If you don't mind the little graphical bugs though and want a happier feel to the game, then try Jolly Bastion.

I've been using Mayday for years, although unfortunately it doesn't have all the new animals yet.

I prefer Phoebus, although Jolly Bastion looks really, really good too.

Personally I've greatly enjoyed the CLA tileset. It's a very elegant tileset which keeps the appeal of the vanilla tileset but with a very clean feel to it and stylized creature characters.

The tileset I have personally customized to suit my tastes is clearly the best... for me.

I would highly recommend doing the same.

Tileset?

Embrace the lines!

Currently I do prefer ASCII but I haven't really given tiles a shot, so it's rather unfair for me to say which is better

There was a poll recently, but my google fu is not strong enough for me to find the thread.

I did find the poll, but most of the answers never really said why they were good, and the list was rather shorter than how many tilesets there actually are

This one.

Haha, I might choose this one just to freak everyone around me while playing. Not sure it would be a good sample to compare to ASCII though.

Man all the choices make it really hard. I think I'll choose Jolly Bastion just because of how much it changes the feel of the game; which I consider besides readability to be one of the main points of a custom tileset.

Phoebus has some of the best utilities available in any tileset. Using a variety of stuff from other tilesets and letting you pick what you want in the tileset assembler is really handy. He also updates like a ninja when new versions drop.

Aesthetically I like Ironhand more than others. Although Phoebus is clean and Mike Mayday's brings the good warm feeling (that was one of the first "the best" tilesets).

My favorite tileset is ANSII.
Graphics are for elves.

Truly Spearhills is a paradise.

Hi!

I am not really sure what you are interested in finding out. The graphics used in Dwarf Fortress are mainly an aspect of personal preference and personal perception, so one person's recommendation may be the nightmare for the next one. I think you would be better off trying to find out which tilesets are there and ask for people to preferably show maps in the map archive featuring those tilesets (IIRC, the map archive preserves the graphics used) so you can see for yourself whether you like the tileset in action.

Yours,
Deathworks
