Indeed. The only defense against hackers in this game is a server with a password. If someone could set up a passworded server for B12, that would be awesome.

Seeing as how it is turkey break so I have no school, and I don't really have anything else to do (other than write 3 boring English papers) I am going to be redoing my server and hosting it within 24 hours, more likely within 8 hours. If anyone is interested in what the IP is and such, let me know. It will be running 1.7.3 with beta patch 98220. Also, since I can mess with the mission settings, do y'all want global chat to be enabled?

EDIT: I will also be running it OPEN and not whitelisted, at least for a few days. My plan is to compile a Skype list of people that don't hack/cheat and after I have roughly 70 or so, go passworded and whitelisted and send them the password. If of course I get a bunch of hackers before the lockdown, I will try to revert to a database before their deaths and I will lock it down then and there.

EDIT2: Also, the server is going to be english speaking only if global is enabled... I don't want to be discriminatory, but having a bunch of people spamming global is bad, having them do it and they only speak spanish or russian means that I have no other course of action other than banning them.

I'm not sure if it's possible, but can you (as admin) spawn waves of zombies? If so, I'd love to join in, spend a few hours gathering guns and equipment with other people, then find some remote hilltop and see how long we can hold out.

Also, do sandbags/wire block zombies yet?

I can't spawn waves of zombies... but I could edit the mission file to cause a ton of zombies to spawn. Also, AFAIK, they do.

Mono124, any updates on what the server's going to be?
Which island? What server name?

Me and a friend have been looking for a good private hive to join. I tried setting one up but failed miserably, which kind of works in our favour as my server isn't the most powerful machine around.

Mono124, any updates on what the server's going to be?
Which island? What server name?

Me and a friend have been looking for a good private hive to join. I tried setting one up but failed miserably, which kind of works in our favour as my server isn't the most powerful machine around.

Update 1.7.3 on Cherno. As far as how "powerful" my machine is... it's a old 2001 Optiplex workstation (Woo Pentium 4 and 4 gigs of DDR2 that don't match!). I am in the process of setting up a newer server, but it's going slow. Either way, it supports 30 people (40 with lag, at 43 it craps out). The biggest bottlecap the game has is internet connection, the server itself surprisingly uses little power. This:

Quad Core CPU @ 2.5GHz (amended - Feedback suggests that as long as you're running a faster CPU, you should be fine)
2GB+ RAM (RAM isn't a big issue in an ArmA server, so don't be overly concerned with having copious amounts [16GB+] of it as it won't be required)
50GB+ HDD (Preferably SATA3 or SSD) (Installation alone is ~20GB. Also, keep log files in mind! These get HUGE if not pruned)
Bandwidth at least 2TB a month. Hive and Player client communication accounts for A LOT of bandwidth.

Is complete BS. I am using:
Single Core 3.0Ghz Pentium 4
4GB of RAM
80GB HDD that's ATA
Unlimited Bandwidth

I am running a gutted version of Vista Ultimate. Basically all that is running on the machine is a firewall, the game, and core OS components. Granted, after roughly 12 hours I have to restart the server because the database entries get fragmented and cannot be defragmented without a restart, but that's a problem almost ALL private servers have.

Once the newer machine is up and running, I'll transfer the server onto it and probably bump the view distance to 2km and increase the number of zombies. Speaking of settings, what kind of hud settings do y'all want?

EDIT: For settings, I need opinions on these:

3rd Person View      -- Third person view
Armor            -- Gives you extra damage resistance
Auto Aim         -- Automatically aims your gun, WORK REGARDLESS of 'Weapon Cursor' setting
Auto Spot            -- If you're close enough to an enemy, you'll report it without right-clicking
Camera Shake          -- Used for camera shake for shock, injuries, etc.
Death Messages       -- Displays "XXX was killed by YYY" messages in multiplayer
Enemy Tag          -- Displays information on enemy units
Friendly Tag       -- Displays information on friendly units. ONLY WORKS WITH 'Weapon Cursor on', eg crosshair on.
Hud             -- Shows you leaders location and your position in formation
Hud Perm          -- Permanently show or disable the HUD
Hud Wp          -- Shows Waypoints right after they're ordered to you
Hud Wp Perm           -- Shows Waypoints permanently
Map            -- Enable or Disable Waypoints on the map
Tracers           -- Displays tracers even of small arms that in real life would not have tracers
Weapon Cursor      -- Shows the crosshair for your weapon

EDIT: The server runs! I am now going to edit config files and stuff, but it is mostly done and should take at most 2 hours to finish wading through config edits and tool setups.

Well, cross-hairs are very helpful for shooting from the hip. As an experienced player, I often find I can fire from the hip as accurately as I can with the iron sights when firing with the cross-hair.
Pretty much any settings are fine for me personally... Except one...
Auto Aim         -- Automatically aims your gun, WORK REGARDLESS of 'Weapon Cursor' setting
Which, I hope I never have to deal with in a mouse controlled game ever again.

I personally like the higher difficulty settings. No crosshair (all guns fire at the centre of your screen without accounting for shaking and breathing), no third person and no visible hud really improves immersion. Third person is optional though, because it can be a pain in the ass to raid houses without it. ArmA2 never worked properly in first person.

Is there any way to enable the HUD but disable the distances when you scroll? If so I'd do that... but if not, I'll just disable it alltogether.

Any word on when this is going to become a standalone? I like Arma 2, but it is annoying to have to play under the limitations of its engine.

Can you connect with only the IP? There's no place in the filter for it.
