So I  recently bought ArmA II CO (partly because of this mod) and although I've been playing the Arma II campaign for a few days I just downloaded DayZ tonight and gave it a try.

It was a total failure. Well, it was fun, but I failed. I started off at the coast about 100 meters from a size-able town. I slowly, cautiously went into town looking for any loot. I made a mistake going onto the pavement though, as there was a hidden zombie nearby and I was making quite a bit of noise. He found me. So, like any person would do in this situation, I ran for my life, out the town and down the road. I turned back to look at what horrors were pursuing me; I estimate there were about 15 zombies chasing me. Since they were running about the same speed as me and I had just spawned, I figured I might as well try to fight. I turned around to fire my pistol, and... it wasn't loaded.

Fun times.

I'm playing as TheMechanicalMan[B12] for future reference.

EDIT: Okay, new character, I've acquired beans a'plenty, a Winchester rifle, and I'm currently hiding out at the top of the central tower in Rog castle to the northeast of Elektro. Anyone want to meet up at some point?

Just had a go of this before. Seems like it'd be fun, but it runs like ass on my PC. I guess the multiplayer needs more system resources, becuse ARMA2 singleplayer runs perfectly fine. :(

First life I started near some hangar, while trying to figure out the controls (been a long time since I played this game) some guy calmly walked up and put some bullets in my face. Then I started near some docks, tried to climb a shipping crane and fell off on the way back down. Then I spawned near some town, ran in and was chased by about 10 zombies. Ended up in a church and managed to kill them all. Inside I found a m1911, and forgetting how the inventory works in this game somehow managed to swap it for my makarov. Pretty soon after leaving the church I found I had no ammo for the new gun, didn't have my makarov, and was chased up a tower by some zombies. Ended up jumping off and breaking my legs.

This would be awesome if it'd run properly.

I've been getting terrible fps on some servers, and even if you switch servers after that it still runs terrible. So if you startup and your getting a slideshow, completely restarting the game and trying another server might help. I'm just going to wait til the next version to see if it runs any better. Will my character starve if I don't log in?

No, but they will start starving when you log in after a long time.

Why is this game fun? I can play for 3 hours with my friend and have nothing happen, but still come back the next day craving more.

From my little experience with it I'd hazard that it's because there is persistance and consequences for your actions. Also the sandboxy nature means it's almost a 100% player agency driven experience. It's up to you to figure out what you want to do and how you go about it. Whatever you accomplish has a degree of permanence. And it means something because of the difficulty you had to go through to get anything done.

edit: Also Day Z has that wonderfull ability to let players create their own narratives. It's something it shares with Dwarf Fortress and a few other extremely memorable games. Owing to the multiplayer/simulation nature of the game interesting and unexpected things happen to you that aren't prescripted. This creates situations where two people talking about the game will have different stories of meaningfull things that happened to their characters. Contrast with the majority of games where everyone who's played them has one story, which is the same as everyone else who played that game.

The fps should be fixed in next version.

So for those of you who are still playing and aren't having FPS problems, we should form a survivor group. The only people I've met in-game so far didn't seem very friendly, and I would rather not have to start a new character because I was betrayed by a random player.

If you're interested, just say so. I'm usually on in the evening hours (anywhere between 4-10pm) Eastern Time (US). Does anyone have a server preference?

I prefer the Seattle servers, but as long as it is daytime, I'm generally all right.

I'm over in Bor with some dudes from N@W - we're farming the deer camps and the one house in that down that has loot spawns.

I mean this in the best way, but you might be playing a less than ideal game for avoiding that.

Point taken, but my point being I'd rather try to survive with people from Bay12 than randoms. At least we would have a common background, thus eliminating total anonymity. My current character's goal is to just survive- once that gets boring then I'll be willing to take more risks, I suppose.

I've created a Steam group for any of you who play through Steam. Join up if you're interested (and then I'll feel like I did something successful)!
