RPS coverage: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/05/10/thank-you-for-the-dayz-part-zero/
And considering they have a daily pageview number at around 110k, the servers are gonna be full as all hell.

I'm tempted, but spending $30 US just to play a mod makes me hesitate.

Is it worth it?

The mod is not, IMO, particularly considering the entire community is likely to bail for ArmA 3 when that releases.  However, ArmA 2 CO itself is very good, if you like semi-realistic shooters.

If I hadn't already invested in it, I wouldn't have ever gotten into the mod. That being said, it is fun. Not 30 dollars fun, but fun. But I tend to try to do my gaming extremely cheaply these days. Honestly though, this mod is the most I've ever played of any of the games, OpFlashpoint, Arma, or Arma2.

Its $30 fun for me. Adding the three(?) Storylines of ArmA II unmodded, its a good buy.

I have all the files, but I haven't gotten it working yet. I've got to take a look at this.

You know what would be neat? A way to mark groups/clans. Imagine if everyone in bay 12 could mark their character with either an obvious avatar change like, I don't know, blue shirts or something, or something more abstract like a little text indicator like [B12] that appears when targeted for one or two seconds. Just enough so that you could verify your allies.

I have to say, I love the way it sounds. Apparently you have to deal with a few bandit pros, but once you get well away from the coast it should be safer. Hmm... does it spawn boats? Because there's a few small islands out there that would be ideal.

Can the mod run in Tajikstan? If nothing else, it has far more internal spaces.

Some DayZ Bay12ers put [B12] in front of their name, which in some servers shows up if you aim at people.

For the Obvious avatar change, I dont know if it is what you are looking for, but this feature http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/squad.xml should allow any willing player to put a patch (like B12 or something) in their sleeves and on the vehicles they're riding.

here's a random screen for example http://rautapalli.com/random/arma/squad/images/fplogo.png , just imagin it is DF logo or something like that.  :P

Just tried the game, played for a couple hours.

Life 1: got mugged byzombies in a town with no name

Lif 2: lost as fuck, but I found a winchester and some ammo in a town that also had a hunting rifle and crossbow, both with ammo.

now if only I could actually hit shit

If you're on a server with crosshairs, then you generally have a much easier time of hitting things. Just aim where the little vertical line is, but try to do it while crouched or prone and stationary, without the heavy breathing. Otherwise, aim in the general direction and fire if you are without crosshairs. Or, right click once and use ironsights, but I tend to miss more with those.

This is Bay12. We don't do tutorials.

I played for 15 minutes, didnt see a person or zombie, managed to break both my legs falling off a ledge in a barn, ran out into a field throwing flares all over the place trying to work out how to heal myself, after finally managing to bandage myself, I realised I had dropped my markov in the long grass in the field, looked for 5 minutes before facedesking and turning it off.

Id recommend the tutorial.

I just can't hit the damn zombies because they keep running serpentine, or suddenly turning for no reason
