Good: Money pouring in means that the game will benefit from real infresturcture, meaning almost certainly improved uptime and durability.
Bad: Contractual obligations may limit exploration in game design- he now can't, for instance, have microcharges like $0.50 per life (regardless of how terrible that example would be, there is an important loss of liberty)
Good: Official support from Bohemia will further speed fixes of even the deepest bugs.
Bad: We may need to wait for ARMA 3 to get Authentic DayZ
Good: The current development pardigm they've thought up will allow a remarkable amount of freedom (notwithstanding the above), possibly including major deviations from ARMA2, like shooting from cars.
Bad: Rocket is clinically insane and prone to getting involved in forum messes, which is a bad sign for a dev. I would not be surprised to see him break down at some time.

So I just loaded this up for the first time, without ever having played an Arma game before.  Just trying to set up my controls is a bit overwhelming.  I knew this would be very simulationist, but geez.

you might want to take some time to go through the arma 2 tutorials to get the basics. (dayz controls have a few extras, like rightclicking food/axe/water/ammo in your inventory)

So I spawn at night on the outskirts of a village.  I can see the silhouettes of buildings against the night sky.  I start walking slowly in that direction, and I see a red light illuminate a street a couple blocks away.  I walk towards it, but the light disappears before I can get there.  I walk that way a little bit more, but then I see the silhouette of a zombie in front of me.  So I go prone and see if it will just continue on its way.  As I'm laying there, it becomes clearer that there are several zombies around.  So I continue to lay there and zombies just keep walking past.  At a couple points, I've had 3 zombies just come and circle me for a couple minutes, growling menacingly but otherwise doing nothing hostile.  It's the most amazingly atmospheric thing.  Pitch darkness except for the sky, and listening to zombies noises all around me in surround sound that makes it seem real.  I have no idea what to do.  I crawl forward occasionally, when there's less zombies immediately next to me.  Regardless, it's still quite an experience.

How long does night last, anyway?

The clock is real time. Depends on what the server is set to, but yeah... You might be looking at 8-12 hours of dark in the worst case. Can always jump to a different server where it's day time though.

A-ha-ha. Thank you sir. I've joined the group as Steve, Stan or Sally, I'll change my name whenever I'm in-game.

As the creator of the group... we don't really do anything.  :P

It's nice to have everybody that plays DayZ in the same place, though. I haven't played lately because I haven't been able to get the newest versions to work, although I've recently been thinking about trying to get it to work again.

Feel free to organize group sessions between yourselves.

If anyone wants to try a private hive vs the official hives, let me know and I'll put my server IP up. I generally ban hackers before they are able to do any real damage (or if they do a lot of damage, I fix people up. Had a hacker thunderdome 25 people once, and I spent 10 minutes fixing entries, but hey, they were happy eh?), and the fact that combat logging means you can't just hop servers and continue adds a bit to the game.

Wait, is this the main B12 Day Z thread?

Because yeah, I would love a private B12 Hive.

I took my hive offline due to a large influx of hackers and an inability to get it updated nicely. I could restart it and update it (it's much easier now) but I'd rather have it passcoded to keep hackers out, which would mean getting the code out to people that would want to play and don't cheat.

If my vote counts for anything I'd like to play, and I don't cheat.

There is the problem of me being in college and Dayz taking so much time to play though...

EDITED: changed from I don't like to cheat, to I don't cheat, because I don't cheat.

Hacking is a constant issue. A friend of mine was hosting a private hive, and I decided to try and use it to begin a DayZ LP. Another friend of ours and I spent an hour or two getting our freshly spawned characters to the same location ready for recording, got things all set up, but only 10 minutes into the first recording a few people had joined and were spawning vehicles and teleporting all over the place.

We didn't realise they were hacking at first, we were just surprised they had a chopper so soon but the server'd been up a while so it was possible. However, they managed to spot us in a house without windows, landed, someone ran up to the house and called for us to come out or they'd shoot. We obliged, it was kinda cool in the recording as I'd just finished talking about players being almost worse than zombies. When they found out we were fresh characters, they offered to help us, bonus, then out of nowhere a car drove up. We were a bit stunned, but obligingly got inside when asked, the car (and us) then teleported over to the chopper, where the hackers had kindly spawned a loot pile of every gun in the game (and some which aren't in it, normally).

Although they were kindly, the fact they were just twinking the game pretty much ruined the feel instantly. We politely refused their help and logged off. It was a day or so before we tried recording again, this time on a public server, which so far is going well (if you're interested, the first episode is here :) ). The friend who hosted the server is a bit worried though, mostly because the hackers were able to effectively inject data into the server's database with such ease, he's not sure how he could stop it, as battle-eye was enabled throughout.

All in all, hacking kinda destroys this game, when it happens. More so than other games I feel, because one of the main draws of Day-Z is the harsh environment and difficulty. Take that away, and there's not really much left :/

For what it's worth though, if you're able to prevent, or at least limit hacking, I'd very much like to play on a B12 server :D
