Unless I've heard them on a livestream, then I usually base their voice on the context of their posts, and evolve them the more of them I read (similar to visualizing, unless they've broadcasted themselves through them (livestream or TF2 or Borderlands or whatever). Sorta similar to how I read stories and RPG text before everything was voiced (and even with that, I'm surprised at my accuracy to the voices they end up using in the remakes that feature voiceovers).

In a sense, the Bay12 Photo Share thread helped refine visualizing people, and like before, I've done a good job in zeroing in on how people may look based on their online personality.

I've heard Duke's voice in TF2, it's so good.

Y'know, I've never heard Duke's voice.  Funny, I still picture him as both a mustachioed guy in a golden helmet and a big green U, even though I know he looks just like Orlando Bloom.

Come to think of, that describes a good third of the people here I've seen pictures of.  Has no bearing on recognition.

Aqizzar sounds to me like (and I might seem a little weird here) how an older brother would.

Vector (RIP) was always a tiny asian girl to me.

Stworca is a tank Polish dude with an awesome accent.

The various penguin avatars that remain are all posh as fuck.

MoM is a teenaged girl from Pathosland! (You knew it had to happen somewhere.)

I have no idea what Janet's G.I.S.D.M. stands for, so I've started thinking of it in terms of (not quite right) nethack acronyms.  She's now a girl in silver dragon mail.

And for some reason, my mental image of her is something like my seventh-grade math teacher.  Which isn't an insult or anything.  Same personality.

I view people based on their avatars if I don't know what they look like, or sound like.

Aqizzar, for example, sounds like a gruff, muscled man.

And Kaijyuu sounds like a happy, if not too serious, person.

You're all a series of symbols, usually shortened to whatever single syllabel fits best, associated with finite and often singularly encapsulated conceptual systems. I.e. user name and post content. A symbol is a symbol is a symbol, be it 'happy face,' :), or L. All are acceptable stand ins for X, a single concept.

This is basically exactly how I identify people in real life; arbitrary moniker and physical form (User name and the shape it takes) and particular behavioral patterns (post content).

If I have to ascribe physical form, I go with @ with a name tag holding your actual physical form (see first sentence). Maybe your avatar as a little shirt or somethin'. Some avatars actually stick, though, and my mental image associates with that instead of just the name. Not very often, though, and it doesn't always last.

Sound... sound varies. Not by person, but depending on whatever mental voice has decided to settle in that day/hour/minute. It's fun when it gets stuck with an accent or particular gender slant, but it's usually pretty ambiguous.

I see everyone here as text, and the voice in my head is just mine reading it. I really don't have an active imagination

Apparently you like skintight black leather and possibly lesbian threesomes. This is a thing I can support, Testarossa.

... you're one of the ones I associate with avatar. No special voice, though.

I am curious what people thing I look,/sound like.

You're a spinning mass of glowing green triangles that normally speaks in a single, emotionless tone.

I'm kinda interested to know what people think I'm like as well.

You're a blonde haired, super-powered anime girl with a usually calm, high-pitched, fittingly girly voice.
