Do we have the DNA to do this?
     I don't see why we don't go with a scaled aligator-like creature. We shouldn't become a fully terrestrial being, the water is a good place to hide (4 feet underwater would slow most bullets to non-leathal speed) besides going to land would just require supporting our Mass and we already are a fish of sorts.
An amphibian would be the correct choice I think. Do we have any frog, lizard, snake or aligator DNA?

If we must become a land mammal. Let's go with skunk.

Snake is good, they can get into small spaces. A rat would be even better - those things are hardcore. Do we have rat DNA?

(Plus they appear everywhere so it would be good camouflage)

I liked the snake idea, but why do we need to be a mammal?

We don't need to be a mammal, but humans tend to reflex-kill furry animals less than they do snakes, insects, and abominations.
