It's an MMO. It's good, but if you don't like MMOs, you probably won't like it.

Guild Wars 2 base game just went free-to-play.
GW2's communication with the players has been shady lately. Like, they've been so manipulative and withholding information in order to drive pre-sales for the expansion :( They obviously were planning this for a while, so the whole "LOOK YOU CAN GET THE BASE GAME FOR FREE WITH THE EXPANSION!" I don't think needed to happen :/

I kinda like GW2. But support is terrible across all NCsoft games. I refuse to support a company with such terrible customer support. Also, they pretty much hate westerners...why else close down City of Heroes when it wasn't actually losing money? Why treat Richard Garriot in such a under handed, shady manner? And no matter what you think of it, the courts found Richard Garriot the victim and not NCsoft...which in the US makes him 100% innocent no matter any personal agenda or opinion of him.

Also, they refused to give Auto Assault any chance of life, advertisement or anything. Their 3rd western MMO they screwed over. Why? Wild Star which failed lol.

I had my Aion's collector's edition account. But because it was made ages ago, and I never bothered to get on it...I sent a support ticket to NCsoft since they changed account types. They refused to give me my CE items, my account back or anything of the manner. Even though I supplied them the CD key I used. The support person was VERY rude. Was incredibly lazy and wouldn't change my CE account to their new account system.

On the other hand, I have emailed Blizzard support a couple times now.

Once I accidentally deleted a hunter pet, they fixed it. Also fixed a bug with a pet I was trying to tame right there on the spot.

I subscribed to the wrong account (it was a trial one I accidentally subscribed to on WoW). If it was NCsoft they'd given me the middle finger. But nope, blizzard fixed it and switched the payment to my actual account.

NCsoft outsourced their customer support to a company in India (literally, that is what they did)...they don't even have their own customer support

Never will support a company like them or any of their games.

I bought GW2 shortly after release and I can say that the hours I poured into WvW have made the purchase worth it. Sadly, I'm kinda busy these days with work and other games, but anyone who wants a magic find boost and stuff can join my guild on Darkhaven: [CSW] Cthulhu Saves the World. In-game, send me a mail at Jimbo.8952. I might start playing again after the expansion release and any Bay12'er gets grandfathered in as a member if you pm me here. (Just access to the guild stash really, and theres not much in there but food). We're all about chillin and doing whatever you think is fun. Just do what you do and if you wanna do it with guildies just ask over guild chat. At least, that's how we used to do it back when our group was 30 players active.

Ah yes, the insatiable lust of corn and rice, clearly two of the most erotic foods.

I'm fine with mmos, anything in particular to point out differently?

Bolded the points I've seen people be confused by because of their experience with other MMOs.

No loot stealing or node stealing. Everyone who participates in a fight gets their own loot.  Each resource node can be looted individually each day.  It's a basic QOL improvement that makes playing the game much more like fun and much less like politics.  It also makes having other players around really fun, because there's no sense of competition.

GW2 is not afraid to reflect the storyline with permanent changes in the game world. Some people like it, some don't.

No healer/tank/DPS trinity. Every character is expected to be reasonably self-sufficient, every dungeon is designed to be completable by all class combinations and builds can be swapped instantly.  Naturally some classes are better at some things - you're never going to get a thief group healer, I believe - but there's a lot to be said for the flexibility.  Wait times to get into a dungeon are practically instantaneous for popular runs and not too bad even for less popular.

Combat is really active and involved. Some people (me! :D ) really enjoy it, others get overwhelmed or have a hard time adjusting.  Think FPS or ARPG combat. Positioning is key.

Endgame grind is optional. GW2 isn't a sub game so there's no reason to artificially pad the gameplay and force everyone through it.  A lot of players finish everything they want and gradually drift away, then come back for an update.  I play with people who left for months and then came back. I did that also.  Some people want a game that can demand all of their spare time, and GW2 can do that for a few years but it's really more geared towards people with other commitments.

Really, most parts of the game are optional, play what you want.  People are given incentives to do certain things but very little is required.  Some people level to 80 in a single zone, some never set foot in PvP, some people master all 3, some people purchase all the instruments and spend their playtime entertaining people in cities.

The trading post is cross server. No one can manipulate an individual server market for profit.

The game really is B2P. F2P now I guess (not super happy about that, tbh). I never felt like the store was the way of my playing the game. Obviously I'd like for everything to be free forever, but that's also not possible in this world so oh well.

Jumping puzzles are awesome, they're like platformer minigames hidden throughout Tyria.  There's really a lot of stuff lingering off the beaten path that's fun and quirky.

Tyria is genuinely, astonishingly beautiful. The art direction is top notch.

The story has some pants-on-head stupid moments, but also has genuinely funny or touching moments. Overall pretty standard for a video game. They've updated some things to address player complaints, so if you see people having issues with Trahearne check the date to see if it's before or after his personality transplant.

Overall, ArenaNet listens to the players.  They have sometimes misinterpreted the feedback they were getting, thereby screwing up on a massive scale, but they've also fixed each instance of that.

Hey, I liked her!  She was way less stupid than most of the NPCs we had to escort.  I mean, she had about as much common sense as a typical pet cat but the other NPCs obviously thought so too so I felt that was being true to character.  ;D

Yeah. I got GW2 to run on my tablet for sheer curiosity.  Kind of like a powerpoint show - I finished a heart and make a trade, but it was super ugly and then crashed.

FYI: Raids are in GW2. https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/raids-in-guild-wars-2/

Looks like this is mostly an increase in required coordination and teamwork, plus 10 players.  I thought dungeons were enough, but hopefully now the RAIDZ NOW whiners will be quiet.

Yep, this is pretty alright. Runs decently smoothly, looks pretty nice, the exploring is pretty good to have, and the fighting is certainly more interesting than skyforge; the only things I've had a problem with is the targeting (which feels odd to have the mouse be for targeting only instead of for aiming after having played a bit each of vindictus/tera/skyforge), and having not much of an idea which weapons to actually use for the mesmer and their amusingly useful collection of minions.

I think I usually stick with Sword/Sword and Greatsword (at a certain level you can switch between two sets of weapons instantly). If I'm doing Map Completion, you really need to have either the Focus or a full set of Superior Centaur Armor so that you can have swiftness.

Glad you like it!

Check the Options menu for tab target and other settings - I strongly suggest autoloot, auto-turn-to-face-target and double-tap dodge for starters.

The fighting in GW2 is really very different in some ways.  I got used to orienting myself based on where the characters were facing but it takes a perspective shift.  It's more immersive IMO but is counter-convention.  If this hasn't come up yet, holding the right mouse button lets the mouse control the POV but not disrupt what the PC is doing, very useful for getting another angle in battle or jumping puzzles.

New Players, there's a guild founded to help newbies - Legion of Honor or Operation: Union.  Forum thread to sign up is https://forum-en.guildwars2.com/forum/game/players/Operation-Union-Bringing-Players-Together-2/first and guild site is http://operationunion.enjin.com/    They're very tolerant of stupid newbie questions and are a pretty large and active guild.

As someone who's gotten map completion, you do need all the waypoints/hearts/PoIs/hero points, unless they've changed something. Running around and filling out the map is only used for a set of achievements that I have not yet completed.

Also hi free players! This is a very good game, and the free account restrictions actually look tolerable. No map chat is slightly annoying, but I feel like you can mostly alleviate that by getting a guild. You've got all the gameplay available to you, which is the important part, though some things are locked out at first. Definitely try WvW if you get invested enough to hit level 60.
