I know the game has backstory (since I read some of it on the wiki) but it's not really presented ingame very well at all. I just bounce around from heart to heart randomly doing things for seemingly no reason. One minute I'm killing frog people, the next I'm helping them out. Why? I don't really know. Then I'm interrogating captured rat people and putting down a rat people prisoner rebellion, next zone over... I'm saving the king of the rat people from a fire monster.

I'm sure there's a reason for it all, but the game never really tells you. I know you can talk to the heart people and get a little snip of story, but the problem is I'll often finish the quests before I even get to them and even when I don't.... it's usually very very minimal and hardly explains anything.

I know sidequests and such are mostly pointless filler in other games too, but at least I get the feeling of 'ok, this zone is under attack by the bandit king, I have to help these people so they can make me a bomb so I can blow up his cave' or whatever. In GW2 I just feel like I'm doing these things as pointless busywork to level up enough to do my personal quest.

About that, I know that some frog people are innately aggressive while some of their cousins are friendly (one of the heart quests is even about trying to find out if changing their skin color makes them friendly - it doesnt, but it turns them against each other). The rat people are more intelligent the more of them are around (they have a sort of hivemind). They are natural enemies with the asura (they come from the same place), and the asura consider them a pest and is trying to eradicate them. Small groups are fairly stupid and stealing from everyone, which makes them enemies, but in some other areas, they have reached numbers large enough that they start doing diplomacy and only stealing from common enemies like the inquest.

Even though you can run around doing quests without ever reading any lore, if you start looking for npcs to talk to, you can get much more info and background. Ultimately, it's your choice to read lore/explanations or not, you can hardly blame the game for giving you the choice.

If you're unable to connect to the game, this is normal as we're running a maintenance. We'll update you when we're back. Thanks! ^SL

We don't have an ETA on when the servers will be back up. Our teams are working hard to bring Tyria back online! Thnks for your patience ^SL

Wish they would simply announce this on their website instead of Twitter.

Is anyone having the problem where they can't represent your guild? Also, what is the name of the guild, so i know it when i see it?
Also, i think i got an invite this morning, but then i think i got kicked out? Is this a bug, or...?

Guild stuff is still a little screwy.  Sometimes the join button dosn't work when invited and things like that, and at least from what I'm seeing upgrades are nonfunctional.

A possible workaround to the join issue (and maybe the switch representing issue) is to log out and back in and try again.  Worked for me anyway.   And the name of the guild is "Kittens, Socks, Magma"  Look for the tag [KSM].

Somebody with invite access needs to invite you.  Should get an invite in a day or so.

Hey guys I just saw an article about this game over on the escapist and I'm curious about the game.

I mean from the front end it looks like a WoW + Skyrim = moneyz. But I'm not going to set my opinion just yet, cause I'm still interested in it, is it good? Should I get it? Is it fun? Is it balanced?

It's extremely fun and worth it in my opinion. Once you get the hang of it, it's an amazing game that rivals even the original Guild Wars. Though.. they're pretty much two totally different games that can't be compared. They just share a setting and some other things.

But yes, if you like RPGs and/or mmo games, get this!

Outrageously stable servers. I drop maybe once a day during peak hours if at all. I'll also note that there is no queue to get in like WoW. If there are too many people in one area you're placed in an overflow server to avoid crashing the server.

Great community. I've joked around with people online and had amazing conversations. There is the occasional troll, but those are rare. If you're lost there is probably someone in the same map with an answer. The ANet admins are actually active, so people who troll often, or have inappropriate names get hit by the banhammer fairly quick.

Combat mechanics are very smooth. You don't get many weapon skills unless you're an engineer, so it's more about learning how to use what you have more effectively. There is a dodge mechanic that helps move combat away from standing in place which will only get you killed here. If you are a mage be ready to dodge out of the way a lot, because monsters can hit you hard.

Good PvE. While I dislike the mob mechanic some of the enemies are downright nasty. Veteran monsters can be challenges even to people who are a good ten levels above the monster (not all stats downgrade with your level). For larger monsters you need to get people together and in some cases organized. For the most part you can solo the game with relative ease once you start allocating trait points and making better character builds, but you still might want a friend when a tougher veteran monster appears (I'm looking at you Veteran Raptor Bird!) or when going through some of the more challenging areas. I can't say much about the dungeons just because I haven't done that yet.

Well designed world. There are tons of places to explore, and not all of them are pointed out to you. There are jumping puzzles, hidden places, and quite a few hilarious NPCs that just aren't on the map. You'd have to work to find out the highly detailed lore of the game, but it's there if you go looking. It's also quite pretty.

It's by far one of the best MMOs I've played in a long time. WoW got a lot of things wrong, and in my opinion GW2 fixed most of them. If you like MMOs I can't suggest this enough.

I can suggest it as someone who hates the "Typical" mmo. The overall "Feel" of the gameplay actually reminds me somewhat of a previous MMO I liked that also broke some conventions, Mabinogi. Though that's likely just because of the focus on careful and intelligent skill usage.

Also yes. I wouldn't call the lore terribly original, but it's more entertaning to get involved in than generic bioware copy pastes outside of the ME series and a lot more palatable than TES lore. To me at least.

And it's also very pretty and character customization is hard to get wrong. It only took me like 15-20 minutes on each character to get them looking like I wanted them compared to the 50 minutes to an hour and a half it takes me in Bethesda games.

Just DO mind the terms of service on behavior. They're serious about playing nice with others. Which is great.

Massive exploiters of the 21 karma mystic forge cultural weapons bug were PERMA banned, as were many botters.

ANet is laying down the law for future cheaters.

Oh man they banned people for exploits. This sounds like my kinda server.

As long as it isn't a gateway drug I'm all in then.

Although I love the game I figure I would be doing a disservice to not mention some of the bad.

The game is still very near launch and has some bugs.  The game seems pretty much universally agreed to be the smoothest mmo launch ever, but here's little annoyances I've encountered.

* The trading post, which is the big player marketplace has been down pretty much since launch.  It was up for a few minutes today but taken back down almost immediately.  So that is currently not working.

* The overflow system doesn't always play well with parties.  It worked great in the second beta but something appears to have gone screwy with it.  It tries to place all members of a party in the same overflow, but doesn't always succeed for some reason.  And the join in option on the party menu meant to help players join their buddies in overflow servers doesn't always work.  Once your whole party ends up in the main server all will be well though.

* Very rarely a dynamic event will get bugged and that will grind to a halt every event related to it if it can't be finished.

Also in my opinion dungeons are a little too hard.  Regular mobs inside dungeons are as strong as if not stronger than champion mobs in the overworld.  They have less HP but they can easily 2 or 3 shot just about anyone.  And you can fight quite a few at a time.  I even think a few of those regular mob pulls in Ascalonian Catacombs are harder than some of the bosses, just because you have only a couple mobs 2 shotting folks instead of half a dozen.

Actually the overflow errors and trading post have both been attributed to a backend server problem. When I last played the overflow issues weren't there anymore, and they're almost ready to bring the trading post back online.
