FPS SOS: Dwarven Atom-Smasher Maximum capacity?
« on: April 19, 2012, 12:29:57 pm »

I am using a small (2x2) raising gabbro block drawbridge and cheating (using DFhack's autodump) to move items to the floor underneath it (not on a tile anchoring the bridge).

At a certain point (when the number of items to be obliterated is between 800-ish and over 3000), smashing does not happen.  This makes me (and my FPS) very sad.

The wiki does not pontificate on the limits of the Smasher.  Is it just the number of items, or do other factors come into play?

I am trying to smash corpses, bits of corpses, some caged corpses, and gabbro.  So very, very, very much gabbro.

(As an aside:  Smashing 29 corpses, some useless body parts, and vermin remains does much, much more for my FPS than smashing x3 that amount of stone.)

Have you tried burning the corpses and other useless refuse using magma, (if you havn't disabled temperature) and turning those gabbro bits and pieces into pots (for booze and food), coffers (to store clothes so that actually helps FPS), doors, and more furniture or even just decorating the place with gabbro walls..

tl;dr  Magma chutes for rubbich, and I never destroy stone, I turn it into furniture.

I would like to see screenshots, and possibly an uploaded save, in order to establish this new and completely unknown and unsuspected behavior.

It's not completely unknown, it's being discussed in another thread about FPS. (There's like 5 going at the moment, FPS, the next worst !!FUN!! since hell)

... If you're using dfhack to autodump, why don't you just destroy it with autodump?

Does that leave code fragments or something, not as effective?

I've personally stacked 3000+ stones in a single tile, along with some unknown number of junk clothes and useless goblinite underneath a 2x3 drawbridge and successfully atom-smashed the whole mess.

Not sure what could be going on here with your setup.  Are you positive it's a raising bridge and not a retracting one?

I don't understand, though that is about right with anything DF related.

the relevant part of this thread is why the bridge doesn't work, not other ways to save on fps.  Do corpses of dead FB's trigger the size limit the way living FB's do?

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

Works quite well (wait, why the crap do I have weather and temperature still on?!) but most of what I need gone is gabbro and it's magma safe.

I have a lot of gabbro.  It involves an obsessive excavation plan.

Sweet Armok.  That's awesome.

Yeah, built three different raising bridges.

XX <-- bridge while down
XX

XX  <--bridge while up
`.

XX <--bridge still up
`e <-- corpses and junk go here.

Bridge goes down and stone ends up strewn about like raccoons got in there.  Stone-moving raccoons.

the relevant part of this thread is why the bridge doesn't work, not other ways to save on fps.  Do corpses of dead FB's trigger the size limit the way living FB's do?

Only incidentally, since the OP was too retarded to figure out DFhack.  No FB corpses involved; I butcher/weaponize those bitches.  (Or will, once I get 'em.  Year five and still nothin'.)

Well at least you've got the right attitude.

I'm trying.  I still haven't gotten around to feeding my resident armless cripple to my friendly neighborhood vampire.  (She is in the militia, at least.  Seems to do okay at biting/kicking kobolds to death.)

Oh come now, don’t underestimate yourself. Forcing cripples to fight and die in battle just so that there is something productive that they can do for the fortress as opposed to spamming you with job cancellations is amongst the most dwarven attitudes you could take, next to dropping her down a pit in order to give your medical staff a little practice.

Far better than allowing some glorified leech to take her away peacefully and painlessly in her sleep.
