The game probably takes place in the 17th century, as Holland was under spanish control (Habsburg Dynasty) during most of the 16th century. Let's not mention 16th century Spain was this ridiculous:

The game turns start from 1480 and go until the end of the Age of Sail. So something like 1700 I think, can't remember off top of head when the game actually ends itself.

Just so that I can review my early choice, does choosing "Real" mean territories will be set realistically? If so, I might switch to "Random"... Refer to the map above.

Real Map takes the Real World and puts it to the best of its ability into the game's confines, some places are larger then others while some are smaller, Australia is really small in the game last I checked, but everything such as the landmasses should be similar to real world shapes as well as the general local of the Homeports. Note though there is No other nations on the map so no other ports anywhere in the world...


Also:: Just realized that there is a 14 character limit on the names of Main Captain and all Ships...

Just to be 100% clear, the only place that starts off as your territory is the small section around your Homeport. The World map has no preset territories at all, and you can't do anything WITH said Territory around your homeport cause its owned by the King. Everyone starts with a clean slate and equals, the only pro on Real Vs Random is with Real you can use basic knowledge of how the world looks and get a gist of where the landmasses are, its not 100% perfect but its quite well shaped...
