More than two Forgotten Beasts per year
« on: April 18, 2012, 08:07:28 pm »

So far, my current fortress has had 39 Forgotten Beasts visit. The fortress is only 17 years old. It's plain vanilla 34.07. Embarked in the year 501. The surroundings are Untamed Wilds. I'm not complaining. They are all dead. It's just a lot more than usually.

By the way, my strategy for killing them is as follows. Since I'm well prepared for ambushes and sieges coming from outside the fortress walls, I just dug a hole outside the fortress walls going down to caverns 2 and 3. A few years later, I connected it to cavern 1. So, when the FBs show up, they come up out of the hole and head for my fortress. Early on I made it flying-beast proof, so I can close off the fort to flying beasts with just two lever pulls.

I first dug down to layers 2 and 3 in the 10th year. Had two Marksdwarfs kill about 5 FBs each that year.

They are random, as usually. All different types. They show up underground with an announcement. I counted them from the Dead/Missing Tab after typing 'u'.

I'm not amazed you got lots of FBs - all you need to do that is keep making gold crafts. I am surprised you haven't gotten something immune to arrows or that sprays contagious deadly blood everywhere when hurt.

I generally trap them underground, use spikes and bolts, then sanitize the corpse with magma. Paranoia about any kind of syndrome pays off.

Not all went down from crossbows. Had to send melee dwarfs out to finish off some. Lost some of my best soldiers. The only traps I ever use are cage traps for catching animals.

FBs are not usually much of a problem for a decent military to combat... but just wait until one with a syndrome decides to go bathing in your drinking water instead of rushing to attack you directly (or in my case 2 decide to have a godzilla move re-enactment in my well's water source.)

I don't know, some forgotten beast poisons can help you. About half my dwarves are missing their kidneys, but they seem to be fine. *shrug*.

I had one that caused necrosis of all sensory nerves once. I built a barracks over his dead body. Pain-proof dwarves!

And of course Loud Whispers will chime about how lucky you are if you get a FB that removes eyes.  :P

I don't know quite how many I've had in my fort in 10 years, but I was getting 2-3 per year for a few years while my fort was still growing.  After that stopped I sometimes don't get one at all in a year.

They're all sealed up in the caverns.  I'm scared to go find out what they might have in store for me.  :(

The only FB I ever avoid, are the ones who come wielding fire. Even toxic gas and secretions and poisonous bites never seem to have caused me any problems. On a related note, fire can go through fortifications correct?

Ghoulz - 15 minutes could save you 15% or more on carp insurance.

Yes.

And on another note, composed of flame = usually one shot kills. But if made of metal and.. Beware its flame? GTFO.

One of the FBs flew over my walls and killed many of my animals with fire breath before he was killed. A goblin in a cage was burned alive, along with the cage. The FB also set an artifact Animal Trap on fire. I ended up building a wall around the burning trap to keep the smoke from spreading on level z0.

Fire breath can not only go through fortifications, but encompasses more than one z level. Two of my best Marksdwarfs, who were behind fortifications one level up (level z+1), were killed simultaneously by an FB breathing dust on ground level. I was tempted to revert to an old save but didn't. One of those guys was one of my starting 7 and was my Champion. He started as a Marksdwarf on embark.
