Bolt materials

There are so many materials that you can make weapons and armor from.. which are the best commonly found materials for crossbow bolts? I have lead in this fortress - does weight improve effectiveness?

Lead isn't a weapons material unless you mod the raws for [ITEM_AMMO]  In vanilla, best crossbow ammo is silver, as bolts use blunt damage.  Their small contact area allows them to imbed in wounds even though they're blunt - for that matter a warhammer can become lodged firmly in the wound.

Generally though, you get 3 types of ammo.  Wood, bone, and metal - in order of importance.  For the most part, all metal ammo will serve you about as well as any other, it does make a difference but not a big enough one to overhaul your army.

For the most part the best reason to use Silver as a material for bolts is because of how damn ubiquitous it is. It’s not as if you need several hundred warhammers.

SCIENCE thread (not one of mine)

TLDR: No, weight doesn't matter.

... In vanilla, best crossbow ammo is silver, as bolts use blunt damage. ...

[ITEM_AMMO:ITEM_AMMO_BOLTS]
[NAME:bolt:bolts]
[CLASS:BOLT]
[SIZE:150]

Bolts follow the same rules as swords and other edged weapons with regards to armor penetration, so steel bolts are the best conventional option. Most players like to use junk metals like silver or copper, and that's fine. The best bolt is embedded in a goblin's chest.
