Clean them traps
« on: April 18, 2012, 01:33:47 pm »

as you probably know weapon traps have a chance to get clogged with corpses (I think 20% chance)

The problem is, dwarves will automatically do this whether they have the cleaning profession enabled or not.

While the goblins are still running through them.

Is there a way to prevent my dwarves from running out in the meatgrinder of a trap hallway for a time, so they stop dying? since it's not a cleaning job, turning off cleaning on all the dwarves doesn't work.

This sort of thing is what burrows and military alerts are for.

I agree completely. Otherwise use magma traps.

I have to admit i'm not good with burrows. Just make one and set it to civilian alert right? My military is waiting on the end of my trap room (It's just designed to soften them up) so they seem to be doing fine.

*edit* Figured out how to set civilian alert. learn something new every day :D

Correct. Just create a burro(w), then go to the alerts page, highlight the alert you want, and then press right 2x and hit enter on the name of the burrow you just created. Then simply turn the civilian alert to that alert and all civilians will crowd inside that burrow until you turn the alert off.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Exactly. First you designate a burrow, then you create a new military alert, assign it that burrow and activate it whenever you're being invaded. If you exclude your trap room your dwarves, military excluded, won't willingly enter the area.

Then you simply change back to an inactive alert when all the invaders are dead and your dwarves will clean the traps as needed.

Placing your lever control room in that burrow is a smart idea, for as long as the civ alert is active, you will have many volunteers for quickly pulling levers controlling entry and exit, as well as any other fiendish devices you created.

Should you fail to comply, strict !!disciplinary actions!! will be taken. Also, we feel we should remind you that one of the "criminals" on your list is the chief medical dwarf. If he ends up too badly injured to do his job, you will be fired. Out of a magma cannon.
Sincerely,

another question if you guys don't mind..

Seems I caught both their hammer lord and axe lord in my cage traps, how do I get to their inventory screens to strip them of their weapons and armor?

Also what do you think is better, magma bath, or throwing them off my execution tower?

Also does water break falls? I was thinking of flooding the landing area of the tower so I have a nice blood soup for newly captured goblins to fall in and add to.

I always just use the d-b-d to dump everything in the area and then use k or the stock menu to un-dump the cage

how do dwarves respect burrows when dwarves are assigned to particular burrows, then a civilian alert restricts civilians to other burrows?

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

I generally throw high ranking enemies to their own jail cells. Especially elves.

Tried that, it doesn't strip them of their possessions. dumping everything in the area then undumping the cages just leaves them there and no one even touches them.

well that all depends. do you have any skilled bonecarvers and leatherworkers?

because if you toss them off a cliff, you may be able to make yourself some fancy *<<*goblin leather caps*>>* (ornamented with goblin bones, of course) to wear around the fort, and have your marksdwarves use *goblin bone bolts* fired from *goblin bone crossbows* to attack your enemies.

the magma bath solution, while wondrous, maybe be not quite as dwarfy as turning the goblins into socks ornamented with images of dying goblins made out of goblin bones.

bonus marks if you burn half the goblins and manage to get images of burning goblins on the socks as a result, though.

Civilian alert completely overrides individual burrow assignment.  When the civilian alert is active, the individual assignments will be ignored.

You also have to un-forbid all items using the area designation tool, their equipment is forbidden by default.
