I'd suggest constructing a city in the underworld entirely out of blocks, and then having your entire fortress move in there and everyone will live in the underworld.

You'd of course probably want a walled city, and you could build it from floor to ceiling in the underworld, but constructing an entity city out of blocks would require an army of masons along with an army of soldiers to protect them while under construction.

Then do it in an evil biome where corpses will continually rise from the dead.

Discussing de-weaponization of the world. We are on Bay12 dammit! What have we done?!

Ah, zat is because winning is undwarfy, you see?

Certainly you can set yourself a goal and, fortune permitting, achieve it for some modicum of satisfaction. But what then? What are you left with once you have achieved total peace and security?

A blank, empty, colourless world devoid of hazards, fit only to be reforged on the anvil of creation that conflict may begin anew.

Build a cross-continental railroad.

Don't tell me that site boundaries make it impossible.  You just have to make the carts jump a little.

Then, once you've done that:
Make a rail shooter for adventure mode.

I think the ultimate "win" will be the dwarven mecha.  Once we get movable fortress parts, it's only a matter of time before actual full-sized mechs.

Also, you need to pay attention more.  No one in the whole world of Dwarf Fortress wants to win.  Every little human peasant you recruit proclaims, "Lead me to glory and death!"  No one even wants to win.  Everyone desires nothing less than a fine death.

That, if anything, is your "win".  You win by losing most spectacularly.

Most my forts end up being dedicated entirely to producing art about glory and honor.

I never use any lethal traps for fortress defense. All defense is handled by dwarven steel held by dwarves. This means I soon have battle hardened warriors in my fortress. Occasionally a warrior will fall, but not before becoming worthy of legends, with his armor and weapon having earned names.

Then the legendary craftdwarves will inscribe the deeds of the fallen champion onto the weapons and armor of the fortress, such that each piece of armor and every weapon will have around a full page of decorations made out of the bone and metal of slain enemies.

So I got to thinking, that one Guy was considered to have won 2010 because he made a mockery of HFS, removing the greatest threat to a fort, and living there.
If you define winning as "One guy colonizes HFS and claims to have won the game regardless of the fact that the majority of the forum cries out that it's impossible to win DF". Then yes, he won. Personally I think that what he did was incredibly dwarfy, but it doesn't count as "winning". DF is like the game, all you can do is play until you lose. I mean after all even that fortress where he claimed that he "won" came to an end eventually, right? Whether it is by goblins, HFS, lag, or even boredom, eventually your game ends and you lose. You can't win, all you can do is claim that you can and then don't accept the fact that the majority of the forum disagrees with your statement.

*shrug*

You're the first person I've seen not refer to what he did as a "win," so if there's a majority out there, it's a silent one.

Sure, there's lots of ways to lose, and every fort will eventually die. The "win" achievement was being the first to defeat the most dangerous part of the game, and make a mockery of it. The question was simply, what is DF2012's equivalent task.

You don't seem to like ThatAussieGuy very much, do you...

I think he's cool, just a little stubborn at times. :P

As for where the majority resides, we mainly showed up for the month or so after he declared he won, then we realized we weren't going to convince him and stopped worrying about it. The reason that you only hear people call it a win is because everyone who didn't stopped talking about it a year ago. (Just a note here, but people have defeated and lived in hell before he did it, it's just that he was the first one to widely publicize what he did and the first to refer to it as "winning". I mean, I turned the equivalent of hell into a dining room back in 40d for goodness sake.)

Honestly, I like it best if there isn't any way to win. Instead, I strive to do things that are ridiculously dwarfy beyond all reason. For me, that's winning.

Oh, and the dwarfy thing has to explode and kill everyone in the fort at the end.

Filling hell with obsidian without walling it off O.o!

Also my version of winning is an above ground terrarium with hell living in that and a means to feed them, prisoners, dogs, cats, migrants. (haven't done this yet). But that is my personal mark of winning, at least until then, then it will probably be something else.

I'm also pretty impressed with michtewa's fortress skills for reclaiming the dang place, and turning the clowns into productive members of society.

I'll just try to win DF the same way I try to win everything else:

Assimilate all I can, kill/capture all I cannot.

-snip-

Heh, nice.

Ya, if I understand certain key concepts properly, I can think of a much easier way to neuter the rush and capture them all at the same time. Was about to try it out, but when I revealed my last fort to see the quickest route... Solid SMR. Never seen a map with no path... HFS looked weird, too. Think world-gen glitched.

How big was your embark area? If you had at least 3x3 then yeah, your embark was bugged. If you only had a 2x# then it is actually possible to get unlucky and not have an adamantine spire.

Spires are generated with 1 every 2x2 block, so a 2x2 area could potentially land similar to this
Code: [Select]
A..A       A..A        AEEA
....       .EE.   or   .EE.
A...       AEE.  even  AEE.
...A       ...A        .EEA
where a 3x3 is guaranteed to hit at least one of the spires.

Honestly, I like it best if there isn't any way to win. Instead, I strive to do things that are ridiculously dwarfy beyond all reason. For me, that's winning.

Oh, and the dwarfy thing has to explode and kill everyone in the fort at the end.

Winning is decided by the person doing the winning.
Did you just create a self sufficent fortress? Congratulations, you won!
Did you just kill the HFS? Congratulations, you won!
Did you just go Highlander on the Necromancers? Congratulations, you won!
You win when you've decided you won.

I had an above ground garden built in the grounds of my castle and two young dwarves spent time socialising there over the summer and at the end of the summer they were in love. Remember those long summers of your childhood? That first kiss in the gardens while crossbows dwarves shoot goblins above your head? The rain of dead birds as the hunters get to work? Truly Spearhills is a paradise.
